Supporting cast announcement press conference for 2019 Taiga drama "Idaten Tokyo Olympic Hanashi"

The supporting cast announcement press conference for 2019 Taiga drama "Idaten Tokyo Olympic Hanashi" was held on 1 November which was attended by the leads Nakamura Kankuro and Abe Sadao along with Ayase Haruka, Ootake Shinobu, Ikuta Toma, Takenouchi Yutaka, Yakusho Koji, Sugimoto Tetta, Sugisaki Hana, Nagayama Kento, Katsuji Ryo, Charlotte Kate Fox, Furutachi Kanji and Pierre Taki. Nakamura Shido was absent from the press conference due to other work commitments.

The Taiga relay-style drama written by Kudo Kankuro spans 52 years and covers three editions of the Olympics i.e. 1912 Stockholm Olympics, 1936 Berlin Olympics and 1964 Tokyo Olympics where it features the two lead characters Kanakuri Shisou (Nakamura) as the first Japanese man to participate in the Stockholm Olympics' and achieved a world record. The second half of the drama will feature Tabata Masaji (Abe) who was credited with bringing the Olympics to Japan. This drama will be the first Taiga filmed in 4K format and the title "Idaten" means someone who is a quick runner. The cast announced during the press conference will appear in the first half and were related to Kanakuri.

Ayase plays Kanakuri's wife Suya while Ootake plays his foster mother Ikebe Ikue. Nakamura Shido will play Kanakuri's elder brother Sanetsugu and Yakusho will play his teacher Kanou Jigorou. Ikuta plays Mishima Yahiko who was also selected to be Japan's first representatives at the Olympics with Kanakuri. Takenouchi will play Oomori Hyouzou, the director of the Japanese contingent at the Stockholm Olympics while Sugisaki will play Shima, a maid at the Mishima household. Katsuji will play Mikawa Hidenobu who is Kanakuri's ex-classmate back in junior high and Fox will play Hyouzou's wife Aniko. Taki will play Kurosaka Shinsaku who is the owner of a tabi (Japanese socks) shop named Tabi no Harimaya and Sugimoto will play Nagai Michiaki, a professor at Tokyo Koutou Shihan Gakkou which is now known as University of Tsukuba. Last but not least, Furutachi plays Kani Isao, an assistant professor at the same school.

Filming of "Idaten" will begin in April 2018.
