FujiTV's "Set Design no Himitsu Ten 2 ~ Getsuku Dorama 30 nen no Kiseki ~"

FujiTV will be holding a free exhibition titled "Set Design no Himitsu Ten 2 ~ Getsuku Dorama 30 nen no Kiseki ~" (The secrets of set design 2 ~ The 30-year tracks of Getsuku Dramas) at Housou Library (Broadcast Library / 放送ライブラリー) in Yokohama from 10am to 5pm between 23 February and 8 April. This exhibition is meant to showcase its set designs and art works created for its Getsuku (Mondays 9pm) dramas over the past 30 years after the first exhibition with a similar theme about various types of TV programmes was held last year and received rave reviews. As this year is the 30th anniversary of the Getsuku timeslot, the exhibits will be exclusively from the 126 dramas shown in this timeslot including the ongoing "Kuragehime" this season. Besides the actual sets used in the dramas, props, costumes, scripts, models, image drawings, rough sketches etc. will be displayed along with the explanations by the art designers.

Some of the dramas featured in the history section include (not exhaustive list though):
- Love Generation (1997)
- Saiyuuki (2006)
- Nodame Cantabile (2006)
- HERO 2 (2014)

The following dramas will have special feature corners:
- Kizoku Tantei (2017)
- Code Blue 3 (2017)
- Minshuu no Teki (2017)

FujiTV's most popular Gekku dramas ranking (Facebook)

FujiTV conducted a survey through its Facebook page asking Internet users to select their No.1 Gekku drama over the past 20 years i.e. from 1995 to the current season's offering "Date" and the results were concluded this morning at 8am (Japan time). A total of 628 votes were received and it seems like they did accept multiple titles selected by a single user because that's what I did (I chose 5 titles). Is your favourite in this ranking too?

The dramas which I voted for are in bold, numbers in brackets indicate the number of votes while the year when the drama was shown is displayed after the title. Unfortunately, Love Revolution and Beginner did not make the top 20 list. Note that for dramas with multiple installments such as HERO and Galileo, the votes were counted together rather than attributed to the specific parts. For such "combined" titles, I put down the multiple years when the series were shown in:

There were some "outliers" where dramas before 1995 were also selected such as Asunaro Hakusho, 101-kaime no Proposal and Tokyo Love Story. Of the 22 titles in the top 20, 7 were in the pre-2000 era, 6 were from 2000 to 2005 while the remaining 9 were after 2005. Does this show that the newer dramas were better and more popular? Not necessarily so because you have to "Like" the FujiTV Facebook page before you get to see this poll so for those who have not done so, they wouldn't have been able to vote. Moreover, some past polls I've seen about FujiTV's Gekku show a stronger representation from the pre-2005 dramas which suggests that the titles from recent years didn't make such a great impact. If this survey was done through other mediums, the results might have turned out differently.

Special Feature - TV Stations' Merchandise Shops ~ Part 1 FujiTV

If you have been to Tokyo, in particular Tokyo Station, you would probably have seen this row of shops from the major TV stations i.e. FujiTV, TBS, NTV, TV Asahi and TV Tokyo which sells official merchandise of their TV programmes. NHK also has its own shop in the same underground mall although it is not located within this cluster. As the shops are lined up side-by-side in the same row at the Yaesu side of the station, it will be hard for anyone to miss them. What's good about having these shops here is that you don't have to travel all the way to the various TV stations to purchase these official merchandise because their headquarters are located at different areas of Tokyo i.e. FujiTV in Odaiba, TBS in Akasaka, NTV in Shiodome, TV Asahi in Roppongi. Most people would be at Tokyo Station to make transfers or take the Shinkansen etc so the location is very convenient and customer traffic is definitely a boost factor as to why these shops are located here. In fact, there are usually too many people that it can get difficult just trying to enter these shops at times.

For fans of anime, you will be thrilled to note that in the majority of these shops, they carry a higher proportion of goods related to anime programmes. However, that doesn't mean that you won't get to see drama-related goods in these shops. The range of products though is subject to availability, the promotional strategy of the TV stations and the timing of your visit.

As I was there during December, I saw merchandise of "Nobunaga Concerto" and "First Class" (which were still on-air at that time) and "Orient Kyuukou Satsujin Jiken" (which is due to be shown during the Seijinshiki holidays). Then again, the range of products for each title tends to vary too. "Orient Kyuukou" only had its notepad being displayed while there were notebooks and folders displayed for the Autumn 2014 dramas. In addition, I noticed the absence of goods from other dramas from the Autumn 2014 season  i.e. "Subete ga F ni naru", "Suteki na Sentakushi" and "Dear Sister" which may or may not be related to their performance in terms of critical reviews or ratings. Given the limited space in the shop, I wouldn't be surprised if the TV stations choose to stock its shops with the merchandise from the titles they deem more popular. It would also be natural for a full-length drama series to have a wider range of goods as compared to a drama SP.

On the other hand, you have HERO 2's goods being displayed prominently in the store i.e. stationery such as notepads, folders, badges and snacks such as manju even though it had ended more than 3 months ago. Seems like after the success of the Hanzawa Naoki manju when it had long snaking queues of people waiting to lay their hands on it at the peak of its popularity, many TV stations are making their versions of confectionery snacks such as manju for their dramas. Perhaps the success of HERO 2 in terms of its ratings was the key reason why it took up so much space on the shelves but I would have wanted to see a wider range of goods from various drama titles rather than have one title dominate the shelves. Comparatively, the shop at FujiTV's HQ had a wider range of goods which included stuff from older dramas so I'll talk more about that when I come to my review of my tour there. If you are keen to check out the TV stations' shops in Tokyo Station, be prepared to see that there might not be goods from your favourite dramas especially if it's not doing very well in terms of ratings or is an old title.

I will be introducing the other TV stations' shops progressively so do stay tuned for those posts coming your way soon!

Otsuka Nene to make guest appearance in episode 4 of "HERO 2"

Otsuka Nene who was one of the original cast members in the original HERO series, will be making a guest appearance in the 4th episode of "HERO 2" which is due to be shown on 4 August. This is the second original cast member to appear in the new series as a guest star following Katsumura Masanobu who played Egami and was shown as having moved to the prestigious special investigation department in the opening moments of episode 1. Otsuka will reprise her role as prosecutor Nakamura Misuzu who is now working at Kyoto Prosecutors Office and returns to her previous office to work with her ex-colleagues because the fraud case suspect she is in-charge of happened to have committed the same crimes in the area governed by Josai Prosecutors Branch Office. Especially happy to see Misuzu back is Suetsugu (Kohinata Fumio) who had been holding a torch for her in the past but is aghast to find that her new administrative officer Koganezawa Katsuo (Nukumizu Yoichi) is also a rival for her affection. Besides this, episode 4 will also show a surprising link between Misuzu and Baba (Yoshida Yo) and a new fact about Asagi Chika's past (Kitagawa Keiko).

Moriyama Naotaro to make his drama acting debut in "HERO 2"

Singer-songwriter Moriyama Naotaro will make his acting debut in a drama through the FujiTV summer 2014 drama "HERO 2" featuring Kimura Takuya. He will be the guest in the first episode as a customer of an izakaya who injures a staff member there and is arrested for assault. Later on, it is discovered that his fingerprints match those found 15 years ago in a gems robbery case thus he has to face the prosecutor Kuryu Kohei played by Kimura.

Although Moriyama had acted in musicals before, this is his first attempt in a drama and he expressed great interest in trying something new. He was also happy to get Kimura's encouragement and became more confident in his acting.

Kimura Takuya to be back in "HERO 2" with a new leading lady

SMAP's Kimura Takuya will be playing the role of charismatic prosecutor Kuryu Kohei in the new "HERO 2" which is due to be shown in the Gekku slot of summer 2014. The original drama which was aired in winter 2001, had featured Kimura and Matsu Takako and achieved above-30% ratings for all of its 11 episodes which resulted in an average rating of 34.3%. However, this time round, his new leading lady will be played by Kitagawa Keiko even though the setting of the drama is still at the Josei Branch of the prosecutors' office. After the original drama ended, there was a movie version in 2007 which was the top grossing film of that year with ticket sales of JPY 8.1bn.

Filming began from the 20th of this month. Co-stars include new additions Sugimoto Tetta and Hamada Gaku along with Kadono Takuzo and Kohinata Fumio who had appeared in the original series.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really think that this is a very bad idea. First of all, when there were rumours about a sequel for HERO, I thought it was a ridiculous idea. Even with the same cast 13 years ago, I am not confident that it can do as well as it did in the past. No Matsu Takako, No Abe Hiroshi, No Otsuka Nene, No Katsumura Masanobu and No Yashima Norito??? It must be difficult to get all of them on board since Matsu is now basking in the glory of mega hit "Frozen" and is more into movies and stage plays these days while Abe is a bigger name than he was 13 years ago but two names only from the original supporting cast just doesn't cut it. It's as if watching Hanzawa Naoki with Sakai Masato and everyone around him is a new face including his buddies and wife.

Things have changed so much in the past decade that getting 20% is already a feat. I can envisage that the media will have a field day bashing HERO 2 for not doing as well as HERO and of course in turn pinning the blame on Kimura Takuya alone. Of course, what Hanzawa Naoki achieved last summer was a great encouragement to those in the TV industry but is FujiTV really sure that HERO 2 can do the same? What's more, the choice of the heroine doesn't really go down well with me. Kitagawa's name already came up when the rumours started circulating so it wasn't surprising at all but it's just a personal thing that I don't fancy her. Sorry about that, Kitagawa's fans. For those who loved the Kimura-Matsu teamwork, it will be even hard to pull them in for the long haul. I for one loved their combination and it will be hard to find another partner like that for Kimura.

Last but not least, why summer?? Kuryu's trademark is his brown jacket and he would be nuts to wear that in summer. So how? He will have a new fashion item to promote this time? A designer T-shirt perhaps? And traditionally, summer is when people go for vacations so drama ratings tend to be lower. OK, you may say that Hanzawa Naoki bucked the trend but it was really an anomaly. No one expected it to be a runaway hit in the first place and it suddenly became the talk of the town. On the other hand, HERO 2 may just buckle under the weight of the expectations to do as well as HERO. I feel bad for those doing HERO 2...they've got a lot of emotional baggage and pressure to cope with and that raises the hurdle for them compared to their competitors in the same season.

All I can say, good luck to KimuTaku when summer comes!
