First-day screening of movie "Gekijouban ATARU THE FIRST LOVE & THE LAST KILL"

The first-day screening event of movie "Gekijouban ATARU THE FIRST LOVE & THE LAST KILL" was held at TOHO Cinemas Roppongi Hills on 14 September which was attended by cast members Nakai Masahiro, Horikita Maki, Kitamura Kazuki and Kuriyama Chiaki as well as the director Kimura Hisashi. The movie is now showing at 304 cinemas nationwide.

Nakai revealed that when he first started filming the drama series back in April last year, it took him at least 20 seconds to get into the mood but he can do it in 2 seconds now. However, he lamented that age is catching up on him and he doesn't feel that he has that innocence trait present in Ataru so the filming of the movie made him feel that it was getting more difficult to act as Ataru. As this is the first movie adaptation from a drama for Nakai, he also expressed his view that this movie should be the last in the ATARU series especially since the sub title of the movie also said so. However, when faced with cries of disappointment from the audience about the impending end of the series, Nakai said that there might be a chance that ATARU may follow the Umizaru pattern i.e. saying that a movie is the last installment of the series but still coming up with a sequel later which made the audience clap and cheer.

Matsuyuki Yasuko to play a police commissioner in the movie version of "ATARU"

Matsuyuki Yasuko will play the role of a police commissioner who wears a prosthetic leg and has to move around in a wheelchair in the upcoming movie "Gekijouban ATARU" starring Nakai Masahiro. This is the first time in 9 years since the two last worked together. Matsuyuki's character is the person-in-charge for the investigation of a serial bombing case and seriously doubts Ataru's (Nakai) ability.

As her character lost her left leg due to an accident during an investigation operation, Matsuyuki had to learn more about prosthetic legs and train herself to move around in a wheelchair and while wearing the prosthetic leg. Filming for her part began last month.

Nakai and Matsuyuki are of the same age and coincidentally made their debut in the same year i.e. 1991. They had last worked together in the 1996 FujiTV drama "Shouri no Megami" as colleagues of a cram school and 2004's TBS drama "Suna no Utsuwa" as a murderer and stage actress who become lovers. With regard to this, Matsuyuki commented that it seems like there is always a gap of 8 years before she and Nakai gets to work together again so she feels as if she's meeting an old friend when they reunite and looks forward to having an acting battle with him onscreen.

Co-stars in the film also include Kuriyama Chiaki, Kitamura Kazuki and Horikita Maki.

Review of ATARU Ep 1

Before the season started, this drama attracted a fair bit of attention due to a number of reasons. First of all, it would be Nakai Masahiro of SMAP who rarely acts in dramas so whenever he does, it's regarded as a hard-to-come-by opportunity to see him in action. I was very impressed with what I saw in "Suna no Utsuwa" years ago so it would be of no surprise that there are many others who feel the same way. Secondly, the setting of this drama is rather different. Among the various detective combinations offered this season, you have a very unlikely combination of a guy who doesn't communicate by speaking but is unusually intelligent and observant with a female detective who's eager to break the stereotype image of her being a mere decoration in the police force and her male superior who seems to have a hidden agenda in trying to keep her in the investigation unit. Last but not least, there is a background story about Ataru aka Chokozai which will be gradually unveiled as the drama progresses so this would be something that could pull in viewers for the long term.

At the beginning of this episode, we hear a man speaking in English to Ataru (Nakai) at the airport and repeating the same instructions to the latter before he can accept what's being said. When the man leaves Ataru for a brief moment, Ataru has actually wandered off somewhere. This is where my first doubt comes up. Did the man leave Ataru alone on purpose? If Ataru is important to him and he knows that there is a likelihood that Ataru might not stay in the same spot where the man told him to wait, would he even have dared to leave Ataru alone? Subsequently, when it's shown that the man even goes to the US military to broadcast over their radio channel that they are looking for Ataru, it lends more credit to this notion that Ataru has a significant importance to the man and whichever organisation he belongs to.

At the same time when Ataru is on his little exploration tour of Tokyo, an explosion happens in a factory which kills an employee there. Ebina Maiko (Kuriyama Chiaki) strongly thinks that there is something suspicious about this case but her superior Sawa Shunichi is dismissive of this. Ebina gets even more worked up when her male colleagues keep reminding her that she was asked to join their unit for the purpose of being a promotional tool and they do not expect her to be capable of doing any real detective work. This does remind me of what happened to Takeuchi Yuko in "Strawberry Night" but I think Takeuchi's character Himekawa had it worse than Ebina. Anyway, back to the story, Ebina is so angry over this type of treatment that she decides to check things out on her own. And that marks her first meeting with Ataru who had spent the night at the crime scene. Ataru gives her a string of letters and numbers which baffles Ebina. He also makes her notice a Taiwan-made nail there. These two are actually the leads to solving the case but Ebina only finds out about their importance later on in this episode.

There is no lack of humour in this episode, not just between Ebina and Sawa who keep fighting over the case and whether she will be allowed to quit her job. Ataru doesn't say anything properly throughout except for the "updated shimashita" which means that he accepts what is said to him and will follow the instruction but his interaction with Ebina is rather hillarious. Ataru displays his strong liking for certain things e.g. this fictitious detective series titled "Synchronised Swimming Detective" which he must watch at a certain time and insisting on drinking a particular brand of soup. Ebina's attempt to convince Ataru that curry udon soup is the same curry soup that he had asked for was a good example of how difficult it was for Ataru to accept something he doesn't want and that it had to be constantly drilled into Ataru's head before he can accept it as it is.

Frankly speaking, the case itself wasn't so interesting. It wasn't too difficult to see that the case wasn't an accident nor suicide but what was more infuriating was that the culprit had never been featured very prominently in the run-up to the finale. All of a sudden, the truth is shoved in the face of the viewer without a warning or clue to guess from in the first place. I certainly hope that this wouldn't happen for future episodes. To tell the truth, I'm not too keen on the episodic stories that Ataru has to offer. What I would like to find out will be how he was sent overseas, why did this happen, what exactly was he trained for and why did he come back to Japan. I guess that if I want to find out the answers to these questions, I'll have to stick with this drama for a while.

Another key story which needs to explored is why Ebina's mother. On the surface, it looks like her mother committed suicide but Sawa apparently knows something about that and it's suspicious that he's trying so hard to prevent Ebina from quitting. On the other hand, Ebina's father and younger brother seem to be hiding something as well but I may be wrong though. Looks like this case might not be a suicide after all.

First impressions after watching this episode:
- I expected this to be a tight story with developments at a lightning speed but I think they took too much time to solve the case.
- There are too many questions raised with just one episode about Ataru, Ebina and Sawa. The problem I foresee is, if the scriptwriter gets too carried away with throwing questions to the viewers, how to answer them convincingly before the drama ends will be a big challenge.
- Unless the drama tempts me with more significant and juicy revelations about Ataru at a regular pace, I am not too sure if I can really watch the entire drama. Like I always say, episodic dramas tend not to attract me to stay for the long term so it remains to be seen how my interest level will be after a few episodes.

Update to Spring 2012 ratings race - 1 May 12

The weekend figures have come in with a mixture of increases and decreases. The biggest drop has got to be ATARU which plunged 6% to just 10.9% for its third episode and I guess it has got more to do with the Golden Week holidays rather than the drama losing so many of its viewers in just one week. The coming Sunday would probably reflect whether this theory holds true.

Mou ichido Kimi ni, Propose went down to 8.3% and it's a such a small drop that I think it may remain around this range for the rest of the season if nothing special happens. Mirai Nikki sheds 4.1% and gets 5.8% for its 2nd episode but then again, the holidays may also have a hand in this. Moving on to those which bucked the holiday curse, Toshi Densetsu no Onna climbs back to 10% for its 3rd episode while Mikeneko Holmes no Suiri also increases slightly to reach 12.7%.

Despite losing 2.1% of viewers compared to last week (again due to the holidays), Kagi no Kakatta Heya manages to get 14.4% for its OA yesterday and overtakes ATARU for the first time in terms of average ratings. Kagi's average is 16.56% while ATARU has 16.34% at the moment. This is such a small margin so the next episode could prove to be crucial in setting the trend for the rest of the season. Technically, the holidays would extend till this Sunday thus Kagi has an upper hand come next Monday which is when everyone should be back at work or school and can tune in to the dramas as per normal.

Update - The ratings race as of 25 April 12

Some dramas have already gone through their second or even third OA and true to expectations, there's been a dip in the ratings generally although the extent of the drop differs.

Kagi no Kakatta Heya fell 1.8% to 16.5% but overall, it still has an average of 17.51% which is about 1% lower than ATARU's average. Looks like these two dramas are going to fight it out for the top rated drama title this season.

HOWEVER, if you think that this is the end of the story, the figures seem to be suggesting otherwise. There's a silent threat on the sidelines i.e. 37-sai de Isha ni Natta Boku which increased its 3rd episode OA by 1.4% to 14.5%. Most dramas rarely get a figure higher than their first OA during the season except for the finale (the most recent exception would be Kaseifu no Mita though) so the drama must have been interesting enough to draw so many viewers. I haven't watched the first episode yet but considering the lack of publicity for this drama as compared to the big shots this season, it's heartening to see this drama on an upward trend. Just hope that it's not an once-off thing though!

Legal High dropped just 0.1% to 12.1%. Looks like it's going to be one that fits int the middle of the ranking because there isn't any obvious spike factor at the moment that could push it further up. I like Sakai Masato but somehow, I'm not in a big hurry to catch this yet. Maybe it's because I'm not so keen on his leading lady.

A look at first episode ratings for the Spring 2012 dramas so far

Dates in brackets indicate the day when the first OA took place:

1) ATARU - 19.9% (15 April)
2) Mikeneko Holmes no Suiri - 15.9% (14 April)
3) 37-sai de Isha ni Natta Boku - 13.2% (10 April)
4) Toshi Densetsu no Onna - 10.3% (13 April)
5) Hanchou 5 - 10.2% (9 April)
6) Kaeru no Oujosama - 9.0% (12 April)
7) Kazoku no Uta - 6.1% (15 April)

ATARU did so well in its first OA which not only raises the bar for its competition but also for itself. Nakai acts in dramas once in a blue moon (8 years since Suna no Utsuwa) so I think this lack of exposure does help in building up the anticipation factor. Morever, the story itself does seem quite appealing although I have no idea how he's going to fit into the case solving process. My only concern is, if its subsequent episodes don't do as well, this high debut rating will probably mean nothing at the end. I feel bad for Kazoku no Uta not only because it's up against ATARU in the same timeslot but also it's probably not doing well because of the plagiarism claims against it. Too bad for Odagiri Jo who's yet to get another hit since Jikou Keisatsu.

Surprisingly, Mikeneko Holmes no Suiri did quite well for its debut and even beat Kusanagi's drama. Will be checking out both and see how they compare. Tonight, Ohno's drama makes its debut as well so there should be a fair bit of comparison between Aiba's and Ohno's dramas throughout the season in terms of ratings and critical reviews.

Kaeru no Oujosama getting a rating of less than 10% seems to be an early sign of trouble. There's been talk about this drama being a hybrid of J-movie Hula Girls and the US drama Glee so I wonder if this is one of the reasons for its lacklustre debut. There seems to be a fair bit of singing involved in this drama so it will be interesting to see Amami Yuki sing especially for those who've never seen her in her Takarazuka days. Still, it remains to be seen if this can sustain my interest for 3 whole months though.

Nagasawa Masami's drama does seem interesting in terms of story and 10.3% is a decent figure for a midnight slot drama. Wonder if the viewers are in it for the story or her sexy legs (or so her fellow cast members put it)?

All the spring dramas should be finishing their first OA within this week so the ranking is likely to change. Will anyone do better than ATARU? Frankly speaking, first episode ratings aren't exactly the best measurement of a drama's popularity (think Kaseifu no Mita which picked up tremendously in the later part of the season) so it's anyone's guess who will win the first round and if that will be the true winner come June.
