Quick Review #109: Yutori desuga nani ka - Spring 2016

Title: Yutori desuga nani ka / ゆとりですがなにか

Rating: 8.5 / 10

Recommended for
Those who are in the mood for a nice blend of light-hearted humour and serious life issues featuring great acting and lovable characters and/or are fans of the cast

Liked:
- While the story featured three guys who went through education in the yutori era, it was actually easy to empathise with their experiences and struggles because these are actually common themes across generations. For example, when we were younger, our predecessors probably also saw us being self-entitled and our behaviours incomprehensible to them. When it was our turn to be the seniors, we may have also felt the same way towards the later generations which came after us. As such, seeing how the yutori generation felt blamed and wronged by assumptions made about them and their struggles in life, it was actually more relatable and engaging to watch than I initially expected. Although some of the issues featured were a bit heavy, the light-hearted touch to projecting these topics made this drama a lot more palatable while not sacrificing the seriousness angle.

- The acting from the cast was definitely top-notch with the three male leads delivering such brilliant performances. I especially liked the trio's chemistry as their "friendship" developed due to odd circumstances and it really came across that they had a close relationship with one another. While there may have been less than desirable traits about these characters, you would find it hard to dislike them and I would dare say, they were so endearing and adorable to watch onscreen.
The pairings with the ladies in their lives were also very interesting. In particular, Okada Masaki and Ando Sakura were really good as an on-and-off couple and the wedding scene towards the end was such a classic. Seeing Mikami-sensei (Matsuzaka Toori) and Koreeda-sensei (Yoshioka Riho) in a romantic entanglement as Yamaji and Etsuko in an entirely different universe was so funny. Yagira Yuuya's wife played by Eren who rattled off criticism and harsh words so naturally in that fashion also provided much comedic relief and her husband who cowered in front of her despite acting tough outside - that was so hillarious.
Even the supporting characters such as Yoshida Kotaro did their part to elevate the story so there wasn't really any redundant or boring character.

Disliked:
- There were some junctures which I felt that the humour dragged on a bit longer than desired (at least to me) so I thought that these could have been cut out to make the story flow a bit more smoothly.

- The beginning of the story was a bit abrupt and out of the blue so it took me a while to immerse myself into the developments as I was a bit bewildered by the direction. I would have preferred a more "proper" start to introduce the characters rather than be thrown into the deep end from the start and feel disoriented.

QuickReview #03: Sekai ichi muzukashii koi 世界一難しい恋 (Spring 2016)

Title: Sekai ichi muzukashii koi 世界一難しい恋

Season: Spring 2016

Broadcast by: NTV

Rating: 7.5 / 10

Recommended for: those who like light office romance comedies where the lead couple is fumbling their way through to love

Liked:
- The quirky and hilarious journey of how Samejima Reiji (Ohno Satoshi) tries to win the heart of his subordinate while being held back by his clumsiness and awkwardness.
- Engaging and interesting supporting characters who stand out in their own ways especially Muraoki Maiko (Koike Eiko) - the motherly figure who teaches Reiji how to woo the woman he loves - and Wada Hideo (Kitamura Kazuki) - the rival-turned-mentor for Reiji who can be quite obnoxious at times but knows what he is talking about
- Yokohama. I like the city a lot and to see that the hotel featured as Reiji's hotel was where I stayed at before and to see so many familiar sights of Yokohama in the drama bring back a lot of fond memories.
- And of course, seeing Ohno in a love comedy (his first & only) which coincidentally happened to be his last drama series before going on hiatus.

Disliked:
- Haru is a good actress. However, when it comes to romance stories like this, I always have this feeling that she's emotionally detached from or should I say, not involved in the character. Maybe it's her cool image getting into the way at times but when the lead couple didn't look like they were in love, I found it difficult for me to root for them and get more invested emotionally in this drama.
- The pacing of the drama was generally fine but when it got to the emotional conflict towards the end, I found it too draggy. And the conclusion was...hmm...hard to say that it was bad but it certainly wasn't that impressive either.

"Boku no Yabai Tsuma" to be remade in Turkey and China as announced by Kansai TV

Kansai TV announced during their New Year press conference on 19 January that they have sold the remake rights to their Spring 2016 drama "Boku no Yabai Tsuma" to the Turkish company MF YAPIM which is also known for its remake of NTV's drama "Mother". According to the CEO Fukui Sumio, they actually didn't think that there would be a business opportunity of selling remake rights to their dramas so with this deal, he felt that it would bring interesting business opportunities in future and help them to improve on original drama scripts. As Japanese dramas tend to be rather short, here is a tendency for the Turkish production companies to extend the length of the dramas more than double of the original length. It was also revealed that the remake rights to the same drama had also been sold to a Chinese company.

Mizuno Miki reportedly pregnant and due to give birth next summer

Mizuno Miki is currently pregnant and due to give birth next summer as reported on 22 December. According to various sources, Mizuno is in the early stage of her pregnancy and will continue appearing in the TV Asahi Winter 2017 drama "Ubai Ai, Fuyu" which is due to begin its run from 20 January in the Fridays 11.15pm timeslot as there are no plans for any physically-demanding scenes. Nonetheless, there will be measures to take her condition into consideration during the filming.

Mizuno got married to illustrator and actor Karahashi Mitsuru on her birthday this year (28 June) after a 3-month whirlwind romance. In this year alone, Mizuno had appeared in four dramas including NHK's "Nigeru Onna", FujiTV's "Love Song" and NTV's "Kuroi Juunin no Onna".

Have a say in who or what is the best in The Dorama World Awards 2016! (UPDATED)

As the year nears its end, there are various rankings and survey results released to crown the best and most popular in the year. Since this year is the 10th anniversary of Dorama World, I wanted to do something different to commemorate the occasion and organise some activities to engage the readers in a fun way. The 10th anniversary game held earlier this year was a new initiative which I hope you had fun participating in.

As such, to mark the end of 2016, here is an event where you can choose the best in the dorama scene for the past year through the inaugural Dorama World Awards 2016. Here are the details on the voting process:

- Voting begins from 15 December 2016 (Thursday) 12 midnight GMT +8 and ends on 31 December 2016 (Saturday) 11.59pm GMT+8. Please ensure that you send your answers within this period.

- Please key in your name or put an unique nickname so that I can identify you. Note that this is a mandatory field for the form to be accepted. Each person should vote only once. Responses with the name Anonymous will not be accepted as I wish to prevent mass voting for the same drama or individual which can affect the results.
This is essentially not a popularity voting as we are trying to find out which dramas and actors/actresses are most favoured for having done well in the past year.

- For each of the 7 categories, you may select up to 5 people/dramas but please rank them in order of preference as the higher-ranked choices will be given more points. Of course, if you don't have that many choices for the category concerned, you can just key in the number of choices you have in mind. Answers should be keyed in such a format:
1) A
2) B
3) C
4) D
5) E
Please vote in all 7 categories with at least one answer in each category.

- Voting is to be done through the Google Form hosted below:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdz18EqiEYVywzm-rDnhRwg-Aav6UIhMVt_28jlqoQd_9WJNA/viewform
Please do not post your responses on the Facebook fan page, Twitter page nor comments section of this post owing to the fact that we are having a prediction of results game after the voting has concluded.

- For the last category of Drama Couple, it is restricted to the actors and actresses whose characters were involved in a romantic relationship in the drama concerned. However, whether they actually end up together in the drama does not matter.

- For leading and supporting actors and actresses, we will follow the classification as per how Japan does for these dramas. In most cases, there is only one lead in the drama so everyone else in the cast would be supporting actors and actresses. A classic example would be "Boku no Yabai Tsuma" where Ito Hideaki was the lead actor but Kimura Yoshino who played his wife was classified as a supporting actress. Likewise for "Suki na hito ga iru koto", Kiritani Mirei was the sole lead so everyone else would be considered as part of the supporting cast. As such, please kindly take note of this and vote for the right person in the corresponding category.

- All dramas series aired within 2016, be it on the private networks, NHK (Taiga or morning dramas also OK) or WOWOW, would be eligible to be selected in this voting exercise. However, drama SPs and dramas on portals like Hulu and Netflix should be excluded.

After the voting exercise has concluded, I will post a list of the top 5 in each category for the second phase of this event i.e. the guess-the-winner game! From the shortlisted top 5, you can then choose which drama or who you think would be the winner in each category. 5 readers of the blog who get the most answers correct will stand to win a prize!

More details on the voting process and form will be released in January 2017.

For a start, you may wish to browse through the tags "Winter 2016", "Spring 2016", "Summer 2016" and "Autumn 2016" to refresh your memory on which dramas had been shown during the entire year.

I really hope that everyone can participate in this event and make this a success. Looking forward to receiving your responses and have a say in crowning the best of 2016!

UPDATE: I would really like to seek your cooperation in the following so as to make the voting process work more smoothly:

- Please indicate the name of the actor/actress and the name of the drama for the acting categories. Just entering the name of the actor/actress will make it impossible for me to determine which role in which drama you are voting for especially if the actor/actress concerned had appeared in multiple productions this year. An example would be Dean Fujioka in the supporting actor category. There are three dramas he appeared in this year i.e. NHK's Asa ga kuru and TBS' Dame na watashi ni koishite kudasai and IQ 246 ~ Karei naru Jikenbo~ so without a specific reference to the drama he appeared in, I will have to omit that vote.

- For the couple category, the sole criteria is that the characters would have had a romantic relationship in the drama concerned. However, some of the votes received so far tend not to be of this nature so I can't include them e.g. Katsumura Masanobu & Yonekura Ryoko in Doctor X 4. As far as I'm aware, there's no romantic link between their characters but please correct me if I'm wrong. Likewise, if you are voting for Yamazaki Kento & Kiritani Mirei or Miura Shohei & Kiritani Mirei in Suki na hito ga iru koto, both pairings would be valid due to the romantic relationship rule even though the latter did not end up together. In addition, I would like to see the names of the actors/actresses and not the names of the characters they play as this would require me to take the additional step of searching for the name of the drama where they appeared in.

- Last but not least, for the theme song category, it can be the main theme or insert song which you are voting for. However, I've received a vote for the name of the producer who makes the BGM which would not qualify for this category. Likewise, if you just put down the name of the song without reference to a drama, I would have to search for the name of the drama when tabulating the votes. Please help me in making this easier by putting down the name of the song, the artist and the drama where this comes from.

So far, there's quite a wide pool of candidates who have received votes but it looks like those "more recent" dramas are doing better because people probably have a deeper impression of them. As such, those shown during Winter 2016 and Spring 2016 have paled in comparison in terms of their performance to date. Do take your time to consider your choices and use up all the available votes rather than just choose one when filling up the voting form.

Please keep those votes coming and feel free to share this post to your friends via Facebook, Twitter or other social media platforms!

Satisfaction ranking for Spring 2016 dramas (TV Watcher)

TV Watcher conducts a daily survey on at least 3,000 respondents per day on each episode of the dramas shown within a full season. In this ranking, it takes the average score tabulated from the scores for each episode. The maximum score a drama can get is 5.

In the Spring 2016 drama, a record number of 7 dramas achieved an average score of more than 3.7. However, only the No.1 drama i.e. Boku no Yabai Tsuma got an average score of above 4 as it achieved an above-4 score for 7 out of its 9 episodes. On a per episode basis, Juuhan Shuttai's Ep 9 got the highest satisfaction score of 4.23. No.2's 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi and No.3's Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi were caught in a tight race with a difference of just 0.014 separating them in the end. The number of dramas with a high satisfaction rating seems to suggest that viewers were quite happy with the Spring 2016 offerings on a whole.

Lyrics: Maria Marcus / Andreas Oberg / Emyli / TIGER
Melody: Maria Marcus / Andreas Oberg / Emyli
Theme song of FujiTV & Kansai TV Spring 2016 drama "Boku no Yabai Tsuma"

Day and night sou katadoki mo

You know I'm watching every breath you take, move you make

Cannot fight karada ga freeze
Let me taste your lips now please
