Quick Review #129: Kounodori 1 - Autumn 2015

Title: Kounodori 1 / コウノドリ 1

Rating: 8 / 10

Recommended for:
For those who want to watch a no-frills realistic take on the issues surrounding pregnancy and childbirth with a star-studded cast and/or are fans of the MIU404 duo i.e. Ayano Go and Hoshino Gen in a hospital setting

* Potential spoilers ahead!
* Currently showing on Netflix (availability subject to geographical location)
* I have not read the original manga.

Liked:
- Unlike a lot of medical dramas which tend to make the lead character-doctor appear to be almighty and can cure anyone or all medical complications/issues can be resolved no matter what happens, this drama came across as pretty down-to-earth and largely realistic because it showed both the positive and negative sides for issues raised. While there were some regretful developments which may be sad, the imperfection portrayed here mirrors how life is really like so I thought it was good that the drama did not try to gloss over things and push for a all-ends-well-eventually vibe throughout.
There was also a lot of useful and hardly-known information about pregnancy, childbirth and social support for childcare which I think would be beneficial for anyone to know and to understand that having a child safely and successfully is not a given. Most importantly, I think the story did not try to give a best or only answer for the topics raised and left that judgement to the viewers because we would probably think differently based on our circumstances and experience to date. As such, it didn't feel like the drama was trying to push for a single outcome or most acceptable solution to viewers.

- The drama boasted of a star-studded line-up with the regulars being all leading-actors level by now so if you are fans of them, you will probably enjoy watching this at least for the sake of seeing how they used to act 10 years ago. I also liked the bickering young doctors played by Matsuoka Mayu and Sakaguchi Kentaro. What was also good was that the drama didn't try too hard in making the characters look like super beings who could do everything so everyone was endearing and relatable in their own right especially the parts where their vulnerabilities were displayed.

- Among the guests, I would say that Oguri Shun and Yamaguchi Mayu left the strongest impression on me. Well, in Oguri's case, you can consider him to be somewhat like a sub-regular member of the cast because he appeared quite a number of times across multiple episodes despite being a guest. Not that I mind though because I really enjoyed his performance as a single father who had to take care of his baby daughter on his own after his wife passed away due to an accident. As for Yamaguchi, her scene as a teenage mother who had to give up her baby for adoption as soon as she had given birth - I thought her acting was really heart-wrenching and convincing despite her being a teenager as well at that time. Although the drama featured quite a number of sad moments, hers was the only one which really moved me.

Disliked:
- Perhaps this might be more of an issue for people like me who watched "MIU404" first before the "Kounodori" series but I felt that the character setting for Ayano and Hoshino's characters was somewhat identical i.e. one hot and one cold. As such, there were quite a lot of times when I felt that I was watching "MIU404" in a hospital setting and I had to keep reminding myself that I was watching a different drama. Given that the gap between both dramas was a good 5 years and that "MIU404" did not have original content to be based on, I just found that the overlap in their character settings somehow gave a been-there-done-that vibe so the novelty factor in that sense was somewhat lacking. I wonder if I might have felt the same way about "MIU404" if I had watched "Kounodori" first.

- Much as I said above that the story was largely rooted in reality and didn't try to be too dramatic, I found the ending a bit too idealistic and seemingly in a hurry to wrap up everything nicely. Perhaps it might be better to maintain the imperfection e.g. how Arai (Yamaguchi Sayaka) did not return to work as she was taking a break due to burnout rather than try to make everything look so hopeful and positive such as the couple taking their baby home after being unable to accept him for a long time.

Uru to sing the theme song for TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2"

Female singer Uru will be singing the theme song for TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2" starring Ayano Go which will begin its run from 13 October. The song titled "Kiseki" (Miracle) is a ballad which was written by Uru specially for this drama and arranged by composer Tomita Keiichi. It will be released as a single on 8 November while the coupling song in the same CD will be a cover version of the theme song for the drama's first series i.e. "Anata ga koko ni ite dakishimeru koto ga dekiru nara" originally by miwa. The CD jacket for the normal version will be a drawing of Kounodori Sakura (Ayano) by Suzunoki Yu, the author of the manga which the drama is based on.

Uru expressed her joy in being able to sing the theme song for this drama and revealed that while writing the lyrics, she thought of the miracle when a new life is born and how people view the birth of a new life with so much importance. As such, she hopes that many people will be able to get the message of the drama while listening to this song.

Uru set up her official YouTube channel in 2013 where she uploaded videos of herself singing but did not reveal her real name, location, age and even her face in them. She made her official debut in April last year and this is her first theme song for a drama.

Production press conference & special screening event of TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2"

The production press conference and special screening event of TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2" was held at TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku on 7 October which was attended by cast members Ayano Go, Matsuoka Mayu, Yoshida Yo, Sakaguchi Kentaro, Hoshino Gen and Oomori Nao. The drama based on the manga by Suzunoki Yuu is set in the gynecology department of a hospital and features Ayano as the lead character Kounotori Sakura, a gynecologist who goes about his work in a cool manner but cares for his patients as well. He also has a hidden side to him as a talented pianist by the name of BABY.

Ayano revealed that the sequel this time will not only focus on the issues around the birth of babies but also the reality facing the families with the newborns and the personal parts of the main characters working in the gynecology department. As such, he hopes that the story will resonate with as many viewers as possible especially how tough the situation is with a lack of doctors and tough working conditions. He was also very glad to reunite with his co-stars who have been in contact with one another even after the first series ended in 2015. Hoshino revealed that as there are many babies on the set, it is natural for them to be smiling but his character is supposed to be a straight-faced guy so he has to stop himself from doing that while filming. As for Sakaguchi, although it had been 2 years since he last did a surgical scene, he was able to bridge the gap quickly with the help of everyone around him.

Matsuoka spoke about the guest star in the first episode i.e. Shida Mirai and said that she was very happy to be able to work with the latter who she saw as an actress she wanted to become in future. Yoshida then commented that when they were doing the first series, it was natural that they were somewhat excited while trying to feel their way around. However, with experience this time, they were able to begin filming smoothly without any hitches. Last but not least, Oomori said that although there are fictional elements in the story, the feelings of the characters are as true as they can get since the actors will have to immerse themselves fully into the story so as to convey this.

The cast also spoke about how they watched one another's works. At the mention of Hoshino's signature work "Nigeru wa haji daga yaku ni tatsu", Hoshino smiled and said that he won't be dancing nor smiling in this new drama though. Yoshida then followed up with a joke targeted at Ayano and asked if he had become a human being from Frankenstein with reference to his drama "Frankenstein no Koi" which led Ayano to "surrender" and asked someone to stop this topic from going on further.

The drama begins its run from 13 October in the Fridays 10pm timeslot.

Oricon's most anticipated Autumn 2017 dramas ranking

Oricon conducted a survey on 1,364 people from their teens to 50s between 11 September and 19 September whereby they chose which Autumn 2017 they are looking forward to watch. Dramas which were not announced by the TV stations before 5 September were not included in this survey and only dramas from the private networks and NHK were considered as candidates in this list.

There are two rankings here i.e. the primetime (7pm to 10pm) and midnight categories (shown after 11pm). Numbers in brackets indicate the overall weighted score in terms of anticipated ratings, leading actor/actress, supporting cast and content which account for 20 marks each. As such, the maximum score a drama can get is 80. The asterisk indicates dramas which are based on novels/manga so those without have original scripts.

Surprisingly, this is the first time that two dramas tied for the top spot with the maximum score of 80 marks. Although they are both medical-themed dramas, they have very different storylines. "Doctor X" features many difficult surgery scenes amid the underlying storyline of the internal power and money struggles within the university hospital while "Kounodori" focuses on the gynecology department where the doctors strive to provide the best obstetric care to their patients amid various challenges. Also worth noting is that TV Asahi and TBS hogged the top 5 spots in this ranking while NTV, FujiTV and TV Tokyo accounted for the rest of the slots.

Primetime Category
1) Doctor X 5 ~ Gekai Daimon Michiko ~ / Kounodori 2 * (80)
3) Aibou season 16 (75)

Shida Mirai to be the guest star in Ep 1 of TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2"

Shida Mirai will be the guest star in the first episode of upcoming TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2" which begins its run from 13 October in the Fridays 10pm timeslot. This is the second time she is playing a pregnant woman since the 2006 NTV drama "14-sai no Haha".

Shida's role will be Hayami Mana who was born deaf and is married to her husband Kenji (Izumisawa Yuki) who is also hearing-impaired. As such, when her parents knew about her pregnancy, they were very concerned as to whether the couple could cope with parenthood. While struggling with her insecurities and fear about becoming a mother, she is sent to where Sakura (Ayano Go) works at when she suddenly goes into labour.

In order to prepare for the role, Shida spoke to a woman who is hearing-impaired and had given birth before where she realised that the latter didn't find that being deaf was a hindrance to her life. As such, Shida tried to avoid projecting the feel that being deaf was a negative thing to her character. With regard to her previous attempt at playing a mother, Shida recounted that she was only 13 when she took on her first leading role in a drama and had to play someone who had gone through something which she hadn't experienced before. Back then, she spoke to her mother and the people around her who had given birth before and this time, she also had to rely on her imagination to portray her role. 11 years ago, she was advised about her unnatural hand and walking movements while having a cushion stuffed beneath here clothes but this time, she managed to move around more naturally as if the cushion was part of her body. As some of her friends are already mothers, Shida felt that it was timely for her to start thinking about the importance and weight of life as she acted in this drama.

Ayano Go & Sasaki Kuranosuke begin filming of TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2" at Okinoshima-cho

Ayano Go and Sasaki Kuranosuke began filming of the upcoming TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2" at Okinoshima-cho in Shimane Prefecture recently. The drama is scheduled to begin its run from 13 October in the Fridays 10pm timeslot and is set two years after the previous series ended in Autumn 2015. The cast from the original series i.e. Matsuoka Mayu, Yoshida Yo, Sakaguchi Kentaro, Hoshino Gen, Seino Nana, Asano Kazuyuki, Eguchi Noriko and Oomori Nao will also be joining him in the sequel

Sasaki will be playing Kounotori's respected teacher Ogishima who used to be the mentor of Kounotori when he was an intern and works as a general practitioner and director of the local hospital at a far-flung island where gynecological medical care is not readily available. This will be the first time that Ayano and Sasaki are working together.

With regard to the filming at Okinoshima-cho, Ayano described the place as a place offering a variety of scenes and said that the staff had put in a lot of effort to enhance the content by including elements such as the use of a doctor helicopter. As for working with Sasaki, he said that he was grateful and happy to be able to act with Sasaki this time. On the other hand, Sasaki praised Ayano for being able to take on a variety of roles and said that it was a comfortable experience to be able to film on the peaceful island. Ayano also revealed that when they first arrived on the island and touched down at the airport, he was a bit shy about being welcomed by the locals who danced for them there.

Ayano Go to return in TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2"

Ayano Go will be returning to reprise his role in the TBS Autumn 2017 drama "Kounodori 2" which will be shown from October this year in the Fridays 10pm timeslot. The cast from the original series shown in 2015 i.e. Matsuoka Mayu, Yoshida Yo, Sakaguchi Kentaro, Hoshino Gen, Seino Nana, Asano Kazuyuki, Eguchi Noriko and Oomori Nao will also be joining him in the sequel which is set two years after the end of the first series.

With regard to the sequel, Ayano expressed his joy especially since his co-stars are all of the leading actors and actresses level and it's rare to assemble such a star-studded cast. To meet the higher expectations of the viewers this time, they will try their best to produce a strong drama. He also revealed that he already got the news of the sequel's production about three or four months after the drama ended but it took that long before they could make the sequel due to scheduling conflicts of the cast members. However, Ayano felt that this gap could actually turn out for the better as they have all grown and improved in their careers within this period.

As for having to play the piano in the drama, Ayano said that he practised at home for a year after buying a piano but hasn't been playing since the drama ended. As such, when he tried to play the piano again recently, he found that he had pretty much lost his skills and has to start from scratch again by training under pianist Kiyozuka Shinya.
