"Boku no Yabai Tsuma" to be remade in Turkey and China as announced by Kansai TV

Kansai TV announced during their New Year press conference on 19 January that they have sold the remake rights to their Spring 2016 drama "Boku no Yabai Tsuma" to the Turkish company MF YAPIM which is also known for its remake of NTV's drama "Mother". According to the CEO Fukui Sumio, they actually didn't think that there would be a business opportunity of selling remake rights to their dramas so with this deal, he felt that it would bring interesting business opportunities in future and help them to improve on original drama scripts. As Japanese dramas tend to be rather short, here is a tendency for the Turkish production companies to extend the length of the dramas more than double of the original length. It was also revealed that the remake rights to the same drama had also been sold to a Chinese company.

The 1st Dorama World Awards 2016 - Winners in the Best Supporting Actress category

Competition in this category turned out to be rather intense with no actress having a clear advantage throughout the two-week voting period. As such, the No.1 slot looked like a game of musical chairs as the person holding on to the slot kept changing almost every day. As you can see from the number of points gained by the top 5 mentioned here, the difference separating them is very small. What this probably also suggests is that the quality of the supporting actresses was very even across the field so there was nobody in particular who stood out above the rest.

What was a bit of a pity is that many voters did not specify the name of the drama which the actress appeared in so these votes had to be disqualified since it was not possible to ascertain which role the vote was for. For actors and actresses who had appeared in multiple dramas throughout 2016, this was a very big issue during the voting period which I repeatedly called upon everyone to take note of. Unfortunately, this problem persisted right till the end so it was really a waste to see those null votes which could have made a difference in the final results.

Without further ado, let's meet the five winners in the Best Supporting Actress category!

No.5: Koike Eiko - Sekai ichi muzukashii koi (34 points)

Koike played the capable secretary Muraoki Maiko who was like a mother and romance advisor to her boss played by Ohno Satoshi as he fumbled his way to winning the heart of his leading lady Haru. Her performance in this drama had also won her accolades such as the best supporting actress awards in the 20th Nikkansports Drama Grand Prix (Spring 2016) and 89th The Television Dorama Academy Award.
Koike used to be a top gravure idol until she started acting in 1997 with her first appearance in the 5th episode of drama "Odoru Daisousasen" starring Oda Yuji. Since then, she has been gradually moving up the ranks as a capable and versatile supporting actress in a variety of dramas such as serious-themed works like WOWOW's "Shokuzai" and "Gonin no Junko", comedies like "Yuusha Yoshihiko to Maou no Shiro" and "Legal High" or even NHK Taigas and morning dramas like "Massan" and "Yoshitsune".

No.4: Ishida Yuriko - Nigeru wa haji daga yaku ni tatsu (35 points)

Given the popularity of NigeHaji, you might have expected Ishida Yuriko who plays the heroine's aunt in the drama to be ranked higher in this category. Actually, if you look at the votes she received, all of them placed her at No.1. However, as explained above, the voting pattern for this category was such that there was a wide pool of actresses to select throughout the entire year so the points were spread out quite thinly. As such, Ishida only had one point more than No.5's Koike.
As the various drama awards for the autumn season have not been announced yet, it remains to be seen if Ishida will be able to pick up some awards for her performance in this drama.

No.3: Kimura Yoshino - Boku no Yabai Tsuma (36 points)

She was my top pick for this category but unfortunately, she didn't manage to snatch the title in the end. I know many people were wondering why she would be classified as supporting actress when she practically hogged the limelight in the drama but that's the way it's done in Japan where there is usually just one lead actor or actress. In this drama's case, Ito Hideaki was the sole lead actor so Kimura would fit under the category of supporting actress.
Actually, when Kimura first started out as an actress, I didn't like her at all especially her performance in the drama "Overtime". Perhaps it had to do with the fact that her character in that drama was the type I hated to see i.e. the seemingly weak and clingy woman who stopped the lead couple from getting together. However, she got better as she built up her career and I've grown to like her more as the years go by.
If you haven't watched this drama yet, I strongly recommend this because Kimura's performance here is definitely worth checking out.

No.2: Ueno Juri - Kazoku no Katachi (43 points)

I haven't watched this drama yet so can't really comment much on Ueno's performance here. I'll probably have to rely on you guys to tell me how she did. Actually, Ueno had been in the top 3 for most of the voting period until she was overtaken on the very last day. As such, you can see that there is only a two-point difference between her and the eventual winner.
Ueno is one of my favourite actresses and I really enjoyed her performance in dramas like "Nodame Cantabile" and "Last Friends". It would be nice to see her be more active in the drama scene, even in supporting roles.

And the winner of this category is Eikura Nana for her performance in 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi!

Eikura got a mixed bag of results actually as the people who voted for her placed her in positions ranging from No.1 to No.3. As such, she did not really surge up the ranking right from the start and her eventual win was a bit of a surprise personally. I was thinking that Ishida Yuriko might have the advantage of her drama being shown more closer to the voting period. In the end, Eikura got a number of crucial No.1 votes which helped her grab the title eventually.
I haven't watched this drama yet so I can't really tell how she did. My experience with Eikura was somewhat similar to Kimura Yoshino because I didn't really like Eikura when she started out as an actress. To be honest, I thought she was rather awkward because she was trying to be cute at times but her tall and slim figure made her look somewhat out of place. However, I think age really helps an actress to become better and more mature in her way of portraying a character. In particular, I thought that her newfound maturity and ability to show the emotional progression of her character was finally noticeable in the drama "N no Tame Ni" so I've grown to like her a lot more than before.

And for those who may be interested in who I voted for, here is my choice:

No.1 Kimura Yoshino - Boku no Yabai Tsuma
No.2 Takahata Atsuko - Naomi to Kanako
No.3 Mizukawa Asami - Watashi wo hanasanaide
No.4 Matsushima Nanako - Suna no Tou ~ Shirisugita Rinjin ~
No.5 Shimizu Fumika - Kaseifu no Mitazono

As you can see, only Kimura from my list made it to the top 5. I was actually struggling between her and Takahata but eventually gave my top vote to Kimura. Takahata is a fine actress but I hope what happened with her son wouldn't keep her away from dramaland too long. Mizukawa had an important role but with limited airtime and yet she managed to make her character look really pitiable and detestable at the same time. Matsushima performed really well towards the end of the drama and was literally overpowering Kanno Miho in many ways. Last but not least, Shimizu who does look a lot like Aoi Yu from certain angles, impressed me with her versatile acting. Not long ago, I had just seen her in a serious role but she was really adorable and very good in "Kaseifu no Mitazono". Too bad I was the only one who voted for her. ^__^

The 1st Dorama World Awards 2016 - Winners in the Best Couple category

First of all, here are the winners of Best Couple!

As stated in the voting guidelines, the people being voted for in this category must have a romantic relationship in the drama concerned. Based on the votes received, it does seem like the winning couple was the overwhelming favourite because they got more than double the points as compared to the 2nd-placed couple. It also looks like dramas which were shown more recently tend to do better probably because people remember them more clearly than those shown earlier in 2016.

In case you are wondering, the scoring scheme was as such:
No.1 - 5 points / No.2 - 4 points /  No.3 - 3 points / No.4  - 2 points / No.5 - 1 point
Any votes from No.6 onwards would have been disqualified.

There are two couples ranked at No.5 with the same score of 30 points:

Ito Hideaki & Kimura Yoshino in "Boku no Yabai Tsuma"

This couple was my top choice in this category but unfortunately, they were not able to seize the crown. In this drama, Ito and Kimura played a married couple Mochizuki Kohei and Maria who schemed against each other from the start to the very end as they tried to outwit and kill each other. The story's twists and turns offered the couple a lot of room to show off their chemistry and acting chops as we were shown how they progressed from a loving couple initially to two people who were putting on an act in front of each other as they bore evil designs towards their spouse.

Yamazaki Kento & Kiritani Mirei in "Suki na hito ga iru koto"

Much as I didn't really like the predictable story nor the cast of this drama, I actually watched this from start to end because of the shooting location i.e. the Shonan coast and Enoshima. And this is not the first time I've watched something for the sake of the "scenery". ^__^  Although the drama did position Miura Shohei as the nice guy and a potential candidate to win over Kiritani in the drama, we already know that in dramaland logic, the leading lady was going to end up with the obnoxious and not-so-gentle guy played by Yamazaki after all. Apparently, our blog readers here also like this couple well enough to vote them into the top 5.

At No.4 with 44 points is the following couple:

Ohno Satoshi & Haru in "Sekai ichi muzukashii koi"

At the point when the voting was going on, I still haven't finished watching this drama. As such, I didn't vote for them yet since I wasn't sure how the story would develop and if they had enough chemistry going on. Just looking at the first episode, seeing Ohno fumble around his leading lady was hilarious but Haru seemed too subdued and distant in my opinion. Based on the votes received, most of those who voted for this couple actually placed them at No.1 but it was really not enough against the No.1 couple who was leading from the start. I suppose that this couple could have done much better if their drama was shown somewhere later in the year and more people would have remembered them.

At No.3 with 60 points is this couple:

Dean Fujioka & Fukada Kyoko in "Dame na watashi ni koishite kudasai"

This is yet another drama which I did not watch but I did catch glimpses of it while channel-surfing. This drama was one of the key reasons for Dean Fujioka's rise to stardom in Japan but the disadvantage which the couple probably had was that the drama was shown early in the year so people might have forgotten about it by the time we got to the end of the year. One common trait among the top three couples is that the dramas are based on either a manga or a novel which may or may not have been related to their popularity during the voting.

At No.2 with 78 points is this couple:

Suda Masaki & Ishihara Satomi in "Jimi ni sugoi! Kouetsu Girl Kouno Etsuko"

Actually, this couple was on par with the No.1 couple in the first two days of the voting until the latter pulled ahead with great momentum and never looked back. What's also interesting is that those who voted for this couple did not vote for the No.1 couple which could be a coincidence though. As I did not watch this drama, I can't really comment on how likeable this couple is so I'll have to leave it to you guys to tell me why they are so well-liked.

And the winner of this category with 180 points is:

Hoshino Gen & Aragaki Yui in "Nigeru wa haji daga yaku ni tatsu"!

This should probably not come as a surprise given how this couple seems to be mentioned everywhere in the press over the last few months due to the popularity of their drama and the theme song as well as its accompanying dance. Especially in the second week of the voting, they received so many No.1 votes that it was impossible for the competition to catch up.
I did watch the digest versions released on the YouTube channel of TBS and do find this couple quite endearing. However, since I've not seen the drama in its entirety, I didn't think that it was appropriate for me to vote for them this time.

Satisfaction ranking for Spring 2016 dramas (TV Watcher)

TV Watcher conducts a daily survey on at least 3,000 respondents per day on each episode of the dramas shown within a full season. In this ranking, it takes the average score tabulated from the scores for each episode. The maximum score a drama can get is 5.

In the Spring 2016 drama, a record number of 7 dramas achieved an average score of more than 3.7. However, only the No.1 drama i.e. Boku no Yabai Tsuma got an average score of above 4 as it achieved an above-4 score for 7 out of its 9 episodes. On a per episode basis, Juuhan Shuttai's Ep 9 got the highest satisfaction score of 4.23. No.2's 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi and No.3's Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi were caught in a tight race with a difference of just 0.014 separating them in the end. The number of dramas with a high satisfaction rating seems to suggest that viewers were quite happy with the Spring 2016 offerings on a whole.

Numbers in brackets indicate the average satisfaction score for each drama:

1) Boku no Yabai Tsuma - FujiTV (4.036)
2) 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi - TBS (3.953)
3) Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi - NTV (3.939)

Summary of drama-related events and broadcasts affected by the Kumamoto earthquake

Here is a summary of the drama-related events and broadcasts affected by the Kumamoto earthquake to date. More announcements (if any) will be made known via the blog's Facebook page and Twitter.

It is indeed unfortunate that such a devastating disaster has happened and we hope for the best for those affected by it. In the meantime, we should be patient and understanding about these changes in the broadcast schedule since it's natural that the media coverage will focus on the disaster and that it's probably not the best time now to be engaging in promotional activities for the dramas.

To go ahead with the broadcast or not is not a very easy decision to make. Considering that the dramas have to be shown within the three-month window period, rescheduling can be difficult and may also result in the reduction in the number of episodes just to ensure that the drama finishes its run on time. That can affect the quality of the whole production. Likewise, the pre-booked advertisement slots need to be adjusted. Given that all attention is focused on the news coverage nowadays, ratings of the drama will be affected too. Perhaps that is why some TV stations choose not to go ahead for the pilot episode broadcast since a low figure in the first episode does not look good.

- TV Asahi drama "Keishicho Sousa Ikkacho" starring Naito Takashi which was in the midst of its 2-hour pilot episode broadcast on 14 April was interrupted at 9.26pm when the earthquake took place and the TV station switched to an emergency broadcast. Although the episode was slated to be shown  again at 2.30pm on 16 April, the second earthquake took place in the early morning thus the broadcast was cancelled. Amuro Namie to sing the theme song for FujiTV Spring 2016 drama "Boku no Yabai Tsuma"

Amuro Namie will be singing the theme song for FujiTV Spring 2016 drama "Boku no Yabai Tsuma" which will begin its run from 19 April in the Tuesdays 10pm timeslot. The first episode will be shown from 9pm.

The song titled "Mint" which will be released as a single on 18 May, is a dance rock number talking about the love towards a man from the viewpoint of a woman who goes through various emotions of joy, insecurity and regret etc. This is meant to match the theme of the drama where Ito Hideaki plays a husband who finds that his wife is hiding many frightening secrets from him when she suddenly disappears without a trace.

This song will be Amuro's 12th drama theme song to date and will determine if she can renew her record of having the most number (21) of Top 10 Oricon singles for the longest number of years (20 consecutive years from 1995 to 2015).

Ito Hideaki & Kimura Yoshino to play a married couple in FujiTV Spring 2016 drama "Boku no Yabai Tsuma"

Ito Hideaki and Kimura Yoshino will be playing a married couple in the upcoming FujiTV & Kansai TV Spring 2016 drama "Boku no Yabai Tsuma" (My Dangerous Wife) which will begin its run from April in the Tuesdays 10pm timeslot. The drama written by Kuroiwa Tsutomu who had previously written scripts for adapted dramas such as "Strawberry Night" and "Youkoso, Wagaya e", is a psychological suspense story involving a married couple and how difficult and interesting it is for them to stay together forever. This will be the third time that Ito and Kimura are working together after the 2007 movie "Sukiyaki Western Django" and the 2014 WOWOW drama "Zainin no Uso".

Mochizuki Kohei (Ito) got married to his wife Maria (Kimura) who is a rich man's daughter and eventually left his salaryman job at an advertising firm to operate a cafe. Despite having married Maria out of love, he finds married life with her stifling now because she would keep her true thoughts to herself and be overly considerate towards him thus making him feel as if she's trying to control him. Kohei's increasing frustration leads him to hatch a murder plot with his lover Kitazato Anna (Aibu Saki) to kill his wife. However, before he can do anything, his wife is kidnapped thus upsetting his plans. To his horror, he gradually finds that Maria has a hidden side which he has not known all along and this in turn causes his life to be turned upside down.

Co-stars include Sato Ryuta who plays a police detective suspecting Kohei of being involved in the kidnapping, Asaka Kodai who plays a newbie police detective, Mashima Hidekazu who plays a mysterious man assisting Maria, Kimura Midoriko & Takahashi Issei who play a married couple obsessed with spying on what goes on in the Mochizuki family and Miyasago Hiroyuki who plays Kohei's ex brother-in-law and a private detective who wants to find the truth behind the kidnapping.
