Key ratings highlights for NHK morning drama "Manpuku"

Although I have not been posting anything about drama ratings in recent years, I think that it's only right for me to share these key highlights in Manpuku's ratings for the past 6 months especially as it is the very first morning drama which I managed to complete in real time. Be prepared for more Manpuku-related posts in the days to come especially my review of this drama!

- Manpuku started airing from 1 October 2018 and ended its run on 30 March 2019 with 151 episodes.

- The average rating for the Kanto region was 21.4% while it was 19.5% in the Kansai region. Compared to the drama preceding it i.e. Hanbun Aoi which got an average of 21.1% in the Kanto region, Manpuku did better.

- The first episode registered a rating of 23.8% and 20.4% in the Kanto and Kansai regions respectively. This was the highest debut episode rating so far in the asadora history.

- The last episode got an average rating of 22.1% and 22.4% in the Kanto and Kansai regions respectively. Figures of the Kanto region for the last week were 22.7% -> 22.0% -> 21.8% -> 20.6% -> 21.3% -> 22.1%.

- The highest single episode rating for the Kanto region was the first episode while for the Kansai region, it was the last episode.

- Here are the average ratings for the five dramas preceding Manpuku (first figure is for Kanto while the second figure is for Kansai):
"Hanbun, Aoi" - 21.1% / 19.3%
"Warotenka" - 20.1% /  19.6%
"Hiyokko" - 20.4% / 20.3%
"Beppin-san" - 20.3% / 20.2%
"Toto Nee-chan" - 22.8% /  20.4%

- Ever since "Asa ga kita" in 2015, this is the 7th consecutive asadora which has registered an average rating of above 20%. Manpuku's average rating was higher than the 6 dramas preceding it, with the sole exceptions being "Toto Nee-chan" (22.8%) and "Asa ga kita" (23.5%).

- The ratings trend: Manpuku started off very well in its first episode and maintained an average rating of above 20% up till the 13th week before the New Year break. The only episodes when it went below 20% was on 4th and 5th January i.e. straight after the New Year break. It returned to the 20s region from the 15th week all the way to the end of its run.

Winners of the 2018 Elandor Award

Please note that even though the award is tagged as 2018, the actual qualifying period is from 1 December 2016 to 30 November 2017 so the winners were based on the works in 2017. In addition, those who win the "Newcomer" award are picked for their fresh and outstanding performance in their works for the year and regarded as promising new and upcoming actors so this has nothing to do with whether they are actually new to acting. As such, people like Takahashi Issei who has been acting for a long time can still get this award.

The prize giving ceremony will be held at 6.30pm on 1 February 2018 in Shinjuku Keio Plaza Hotel's Minami Building Eminence Hall.

Handover ceremony for NHK morning dramas "Hiyokko" and "Warotenka"

The handover ceremony for NHK morning dramas "Hiyokko" and "Warotenka" was held at NHK Osaka on 15 Sep which was attended by the current drama's heroine Arimura Kasumi and the upcoming drama's heroine Aoi Wakana. During the ceremony, the two actresses exchanged presents where Arimura presented Aoi with pork katsu sandwiches from Suzufuritei and a transistor radio as the heroine in "Hiyokko" had worked in a factory making such radios. Arimura commented that she wouldn't be telling Aoi to "work hard" since she believes that the latter is already putting in her best effort but she would still advise her to take care of herself during the long filming period. Arimura also praised Aoi for being very mature despite her young age of 19 years old and expressed her support for Aoi.

On the other hand, Aoi presented Arimura with a fan bearing the design of a bird of paradise and a hand towel. Aoi expressed her thanks to Arimura for working so hard as the lead of "Hiyokko" and also pledged to do the same with the staff and cast of "Warotenka" and smile till the end of the filming.

"Warotenka" will begin its run from 2 October.

Filming wraps up for NHK morning drama "Hiyokko"

Filming for the NHK morning drama "Hiyokko" was completed at the TV station's HQ at Shibuya, Tokyo, on 4 September where Arimura Kasumi and Isomura Hayato finished the last scene. Fellow cast members who had already finished their filming i.e. Sawamura Ikki, Kimura Yoshino, Mineta Kazunobu, Miyahara Kanau, Takahashi Rai, Sakuma Yui, Izumisawa Yuki, Sasaki Kuranosuke, Yatsui Ichirou, Furutachi Yutaro, Matsumoto Honoka and Fujino Ryoko also made a surprise appearance at the wrap-up ceremony where the staff prepared a video of the filming process to date.

The drama started on 29 June 2016 with the announcement of the heroine while the early filming began from 27 September and the full filming started from 2 November. Arimura commented that it had been about a year that she had become Yatabe Mineko and spent the whole time thinking about the drama. Although she had been worried about being the heroine of a morning drama, she was eagerly anticipating the start of the filming. Arimura remarked that she managed to get through the past year not by her own effort only but with the help of everyone around her so being able to be in the world of "Hiyokko" and become Mineko was something she was proud of and thankful for.

The ratings of the drama did not start off on a high note with the ratings of its first episode going below 20% as compared to the past 9 works. However, the ratings went up gradually and passed the 20% mark eventually. The last episode will be shown on 30 September.

Kanno Miho to appear in NHK morning drama "Hiyokko" from Week 14 onwards

Kanno Miho will be appearing in the ongoing NHK morning drama "Hiyokko" from week 14 onwards i.e. 3 July to 8 July which makes it her second consecutive appearance in a morning drama since the previous season's "Beppin-san". She will be playing the role of a top actress Kawamoto Setsuko who started her career as a child actor and meets the heroine Mineko (Arimura Kasumi) at Suzufuritei as a customer. When Mineko helps Setsuko by chance, this marks the beginning of their unlikely friendship.

The scriptwriter Okada Yoshikazu said that he had wanted his trusted comrade Kanno to take on the role of Setsuko so he approached her about it quite some time ago. However, she was already scheduled to take part in "Beppin-san" then. Nonetheless, Okada still wanted her to play Setsuko so he was glad that she could take on the role especially since the relationship between Setsuko and Mineko is a very important element in the second half of the story. Kanno commented that she had worked with Okada many times to date but this is probably the most gentle story from him to date and she is honoured and very happy to be able to participate in this drama and work with the cast and staff.

Handover ceremony of NHK morning dramas "Beppin-san" & "Hiyokko"

The handover ceremony of NHK morning dramas "Beppin-san" and "Hiyokko" was held at NHK's HQ in Shibuya, Tokyo on 23 March which was attended by the leads Yoshine Kyoko and Arimura Kasumi. During the ceremony, the leads engaged in a customary exchange of gifts where Arimura presented tomatoes, natto, monkfish which are signature produce from Ibaraki Prefecture as well as rice which she harvested personally. In return, Yoshine gave 2kg of Kobe beef to Arimura. With regard to the gifts, Arimura said that she never expected to receive beef but it will come in useful to build stamina for the filming ahead. On the other hand, Yoshine revealed that she was very happy to get her favourite tomatoes so she will support "Hiyokko" while she is having breakfast with the rice and tomatoes. When asked if she had any advice for Arimura, Yoshine said that she hopes that Arimura can finish the filming safely without any injuries and illness and suggested that she should sleep as much as she could.

"Beppin-san" will end its run on 1 April while "Hiyokko" begins its run from 3 April.

Screening event for new NHK morning drama "Hiyokko"

The screening event for the first six episodes of new NHK morning drama "Hiyokko" was held at NHK's HQ in Shibuya, Tokyo, on 15 March which was attended by the lead actress Arimura Kasumi. The drama begins its run from 3 April at 8am from Mondays to Saturdays.

"Hiyokko" is written by Okada Yoshikazu which is set in 1964 i.e. the year when the Tokyo Olympics was held. Arimura plays the role of a young woman named Yatabe Mineko from Ibaraki Prefecture whose father disappears after she graduates from high school. In a bid to find him, Mineko joins the mass wave of youngsters leaving their hometowns to work in Tokyo. While working at a factory, Mineko overcomes various difficulties and grows as an adult. The drama will feature Mineko's life from the age of 18 to 30 so there will be no child actor playing her role thus Arimura will appear from the first episode.

Arimura revealed that there is a difference in her images during the Ibaraki arc and Tokyo arc of the story as she actually put on 5kg and was darker than now because she was constantly exposed to the sun. However, in the Tokyo arc, her clothes and hairstyle were changed so as to shed the country bumpkin image she had in the Ibaraki arc. As Mineko comes from a family growing rice, Arimura wanted to show Mineko's healthy and tanned image back home. Thus, she deliberately ate rice for her three meals even though she actually hardly eats carbohydrates and she wasn't even asked to put on weight specifically for her role. However, it was tough for her to lose the extra pounds in time. More than one-third of the 156 episodes have been completed and filming for the Tokyo arc began on the same day of the screening event.

Kuwata Keisuke to sing the theme song for new NHK morning drama "Hiyokko"

Kuwata Keisuke will be singing the theme song for new NHK morning drama "Hiyokko" starring Arimura Kasumi which will begin its run from 3 April in the Mondays to Saturdays 8am timeslot. The song titled "Wakai Hiroba" (Young Square) is the first theme song from Kuwata for a NHK drama.

Kuwata commented that he was honoured to be given the chance to sing the theme song. Especially since the story goes back to 1964, he felt as if it was a relook back to his younger days so he included this nostalgic element along with the hopes and dreams for Japan's future in the lyrics. He hopes that viewers will enjoy listening to the song while watching the drama.
