Narimiya Hiroki announces his retirement from showbiz

Narimiya Hiroki announced his retirement from showbiz as of 9 December through a fax statement sent by his agency to the media. This sudden decision was said to be made in response to the FRIDAY report on 2 December about Narimiya allegedly being a drug user. Despite strong objection and denial from Narimiya and his agency about the authenticity of the report, FRIDAY went ahead with the publishing of the article. This led Narimiya and his agency to issue strongly-worded statements against the tabloid and declaration that they would take legal action.

FRIDAY's 2nd December report claimed that Narimiya had bought and used various drugs such as cocaine, marijuana and ketamine at his home on 9 November. There were also photos with another man in his house with sheets of paper containing a white substance on the table which the magazine alleged to be drugs.

Following the release of the article, the agency arranged for Narimiya to take an urine test for drug consumption on 7 December which turned out to be negative. Just when the media first reported news of the test results in the morning of 9 December, the shock announcement of Narimiya's retirement came in the same afternoon.

According to Narimiya's agency Top Coat, they revealed that they were in the midst of discussing what to do after receiving the urine test results. However, Narimiya suddenly told them about his intention to quit and would not change his mind despite repeated discussions. As such, they had no choice but to accept his decision.

Narimiya issued a handwritten statement through his agency which revealed why he came to this abrupt decision:

I am aware that everything arose because of me. I was betrayed by my friend who I trusted deeply and I fell into the trap laid by several people.

While being an actor, there have been many things which I wouldn't want others to know or focus on including my sexuality. Seeing this situation of the wrong information being circulated continuing, I feel as if I will be crushed by my anxiety and desperation.

I can't stand the idea of having my privacy being exposed to the world by people's evil intentions.

I want to disappear from the world of showbiz immediately.

I can't cause more worry and inconveniences to the people I work with by continuing to appear in public as an actor but there is no faster way than to quit from showbiz.

I started off with having nothing and am very thankful to everyone who have made me become what I am today.

To the fans who have supported me, I am sorry for leaving in this manner.

I am really sorry. And thank you very much.

8 December 2016 Narimiya Hiroki

Narimiya was born in Tokyo and made his debut in 2000 through the stage play "Horobikaketa jinrui, Sono ai no honshitsu to wa...". He had participated in many dramas and movies to date such as "Gokusen", "Kisarazu Cats Eye", "Koukou Kyoushi", "Orange Days", "Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo", "Oboreru Sakana", "NANA", "Unfair the movie" and "Aibou".

On the other hand, FRIDAY seems to be bent on continuing to report on Narimiya's alleged drug scandal as seen in their 9 December report. It was mentioned that a friend of Narimiya who appeared in the previous week's photos had provided two voice recordings of Narimiya and him in November when they talked about buying "chaarii" which is a slang word for cocaine. The friend reportedly said that he was angered by Narimiya asking him to go and buy drugs and it had appeared that they had already fallen out.

"Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo Gokumonjuku Satsujin Jiken" on location shooting in Malaysia

The cast and crew of "Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo Gokumonjuku Satsujin Jiken" including Yamada Ryosuke, Kawaguchi Haruna, Narimiya Hiroki and Wu Zun went on location shooting in Malaysia recently. The drama SP which will be shown during New Year 2014, features the characters in a Malaysian jungle where a series of murders take place. When asked to reflect on his first experience of filming in a jungle, Yamada commented that although it was natural for various types of animals to exist in the jungle, he couldn't help but be startled at times by these animals. Narimiya also recounted that he saw a 2-metre long kodomo dragon and ran away because he heard that they were poisonous.

It was also announced that Korean male group 2PM's Nickhun will also be making his first appearance in a Japanese drama through this SP where he will play a key person who is linked to the truth behind the case.

Eric Tsang not starring in Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo SP after all

Hong Kong actor cum host Eric Tsang revealed that he will not be acting in the new Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo SP as reported by Ming Pao on 21 September. He was originally announced as part of a number of Asian stars to feature in this SP set in Hong Kong along with BIG BANG's Seungri and Taiwan's Wu Chun and Vivian Hsu. However, owing to recent conflicts between China and Japan over the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu islands, he didn't think that it was appropriate for him to appear in a Japanese production at this point in time and announced this when the media asked about it during his first grandchild's 100th-day celebration on 21 September. In addition, a travel programme which features Tsang and was supposed to go to Japan for location shooting has been cancelled. Last but not least, Tsang also rejected a certificate of thanks from the Japanese government for his support during the fund raising campaign for those affected by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami crisis.

Cast announcements for new Kindaichi drama SP

The latest drama SP of the Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo series which features Yamada Ryosuke as the fourth generation Kindaichi Hajime, will also boast of a number of Asian stars in its line-up. The drama SP is due to be shown this winter and is based on a case set during a fashion show which takes place in Kowloon, Hong Kong. BIG BANG's Seungri, Taiwan's Vivian Hsu and former Fahrenheit member Wu Zun and Hong Kong veteran actor Eric Tsang will be taking on roles in the SP. As the manga series is also celebrating its 20th anniversary, the script will be written personally by its author Amaki Seimaru and filming will be done primarily in Hong Kong.

Seungri will be acting as a Korean student who works part-time at a Hong Kong hotel and is one of the initial suspects for the murder case. Vivian Hsu last appeared in a Japanese drama 11 years ago when she acted in 2001's "Honke no Yome". and will be a fashion designer in this SP. Meanwhile, Wu Zun will play the role of a police detective who was responsible for safety during the fashion show when the murder took place and is set to clash head-on with Kindaichi. Last but not least, Eric Tsang's role will be that of a mysterious man nicknamed Kowloon Emperor who used to rule the Kowloon area.

Besides these overseas stars, other Japanese actors in the line-up include Kiritani Kenta and Hey! Say! Jump!'s Arioka Daiki who play a promoter of the fashion show and Kindaichi's junior at school respectively.

Yamada Ryosuke to be 4th generation Kindaichi Hajime in latest SP

Hey! Say! JUMP!'s Yamada Ryosuke will become the 4th generation Kindaichi Hajime in the latest SP of the Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo series titled "Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo Hong Kong Kowloon Zaihou Satsujin Jiken" due to be shown on NTV this winter. Yamada has previously acted in other detective dramas like "Tantei Gakuen Q" and "Furuhata Chuugakusei" and joins his seniors Domoto Tsuyoshi, Matsumoto Jun and Kamenashi Kazuya in playing Kindaichi. Filming will take place in Hong Kong from mid September.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Being a longtime fan of the Kindaichi series (I have all volumes of the manga and have watched all the dramas made so far), my personal favourite is still Domoto Tsuyoshi. Frankly speaking, it's rather difficult for his juniors to carry on the Kindaichi legacy because the role is one of Domoto's signature works and they will have big shoes to fit. It's inevitable that younger actors will take on this role in time to come (since Kindaichi is forever a high school student) but it remains to be seen if those who have seen the past generations of Kindaichi will continue to support the series, no matter who plays the lead role.

Now, the next question is...who will be Miyuki???

Review of Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo - Legend of the Vampire

As a Kindaichi manga fan, I'm quite satisfied with the storyline by which maintains its usual standards. Given the fact that I have not read the manga for this particular case, I found that I enjoyed it much better than the previous drama series and SPs which I knew the cases beforehand. I guess for someone who had read the manga first, the level of anticipation and excitement while watching this SP will be much lower. In this case, I'm thankful that I didn't lay my hands on the manga first or else I would be nitpicking the problem areas while viewing.

I won't provide a synopsis or talk much on the storyline because this is a mystery/suspense story. Saying too much will only spoil the fun for you.

As for the cast, I am not very satisfied with the 3rd generation lineup. It's not really a matter of whether they can act well but it's got more to do with the essence of the characters which they failed to convey. For example, Kato Masaya looks horribly untidy and unkept which is totally from the Kenmochi in the manga. No doubt Kenmochi may be a middle-aged man, he was never unkept like what Kato showed in this SP. Besides, after seeing Kato Masaya in dramas like "anego" when he was a handsome and charming man, seeing that look of him in this SP is not something you can get used to. And he certainly does not have the ojisan look yet.

As for Kamenashi Kazuya, he was kind of boring in the earlier stage but things improved slightly when he started to investigate the case. Of course, you may argue that the setting and background of the SP is kind of different from the other 2 generations' works so Kamenashi may not appear very appealing in the beginning. In fact, I was put off by his frivolous appearance and his eagerness to shake off any links to his grandpa because he wasn't sure about his strengths or what he wanted to do in life. However, my point is that he did not exude the aura of Kindaichi Hajime's confidence even while he was cracking the case and I thought it was a pity since that segment is the best method to show his acting skills and the charm of Hajime. Just like what Amagi Seimaru-san, the manga's author said, Kamenashi is very different from the Kindaichi in the manga be it in terms of looks or how people feel about him as compared to Domoto Tsuyoshi who was the best match to Kindaichi. For someone who had been following the manga from Day 1, it's difficult for me to accept someone as radically different like Kamenashi to fit into the image of Kindaichi I have in my mind.

On the other hand, for Ueno Juri's character Nanase Miyuki, I think she did not have enough airtime to show the different sides of the role. She seemed to be a damsel in distress most of the time when I thought it would have been better to show her as someone who can be of help to Kindaichi. Ueno's image doesn't give the impression that she needs help at all. As such, it wasn't convincing enough for me to accept her as Miyuki. Besides, in terms of looks, she doesn't look so compatible to Kamenashi.

Now that I'm on the topic of the cast, let me tell you how I feel about the previous 2 generations' lineup:

1st generation:
Kindaichi - Domoto Tsuyoshi
Miyuki - Tomosaka Rie
Kenmochi - Furuoya Masato

2nd generation:
Kindaichi - Matsumoto Jun
Miyuki - Suzuki An
Kenmochi - Naitou Takeshi

I'm happy with the combinations of Kindaichi and Miyuki for both generations even though Domoto and Tomosaka looked much closer to the actual characters in the manga as compared to the Matsumoto-Suzuki combination. They have their strong points and there was chemistry in their interactions. To be frank, I still like Domoto's potrayal of Kindaichi after all these years. He's like the standard for future generations to attain but I've not seen anyone who can act as well as him in this role so far. As for Tomosaka, she's got that clever girl look and can show the strong and weak sides of Miyuki very well. If not for the fact that they are not young enough to play high school kids, I guess it would have been better to let things remain as status quo. Furuoya-san...image-wise, Kenmochi is a bit plump in the manga but his acting made it easy to accept him in this role despite the physical difference.

On the 2nd generation, Matsumoto's Kindaichi is more stylish than the manga character. The focus seems to be on the kakkoii side of him. The less academically-inclined side of Kindaichi wasn't as evident. Suzuki matched the requirements of Miyuki but her strength was more in the cuteness of the role. As for Naitou, he's a closer match to Kenmochi's image in the manga and his comical side makes him the best for this role so far.

On the whole, I enjoyed the SP more for its story as compared to the cast lineup. As such, I will give it 7 out of 10.

The following content may contain spoilers. Do not read further if you have not watched the SP or do not wish to read anything which gives the outcome away.

Actually, it's easy to guess the culprit in the drama versions as compared to the manga. This is because the culprit is played by a more well-known actor/actress as compared to the rest of the supporting cast. It is logical because they need a big name to play such an important role. However, this works against the drama since it will give the game away easily. Just look at the characters in each case and it's evident that the biggest name among them will usually be the culprit. In the manga, this problem is not an issue which makes it much more enjoyable. That is probably why I do not enjoy the drama versions as much as the manga or anime besides the fact that I've read through all volumes of the manga and know the storylines pretty well.

In this drama SP, we have 2 notable names i.e. Hoshino Mari and Nakamura Shunsuke. Even though I did not read the manga for this case, it's evident that either one of them must be the culprit. And another giveaway clue for Kindaichi cases is that the culprit is often someone who looks harmless or somebody whom you can never imagine to be the murderer. I think this is extremely easy for you to guess whom I'm talking about.

It's been some time since I saw Hoshino Mari in a drama. The last time should be in Ooku of 2004. She looks slightly mature and is still rather pretty. However, there are lots of other actresses who have similar traits so she seems to be having some difficulty getting leading roles of late. Maybe that's why she appears to be not as active in the drama scene. Seeing her in this SP was a surprise but as a supporting character, it does not offer too much room for her to show her acting skills. That's a pity in my opinion...
