Ex-TOKIO member Matsuoka Masahiro meets the press for the first time following the band's sudden disbandment

After TOKIO’s sudden disbandment on 25 June 2025 following Kokubun Taichi’s indefinite hiatus from 20 June due to reported compliance violations, Matsuoka Masahiro faced the press for the first time on 27 June 2025 and answered their questions for about 20 minutes. This was done outside the Tokai City Arts Theater after his rehearsal for the stage play “Kaseifu no Mitazono THE STAGE Les Mizera Furo” which will be held on 28 and 29 June.

Matsuoka was the first ex-TOKIO member to speak out openly on these issues and here are the key points as gathered from various sources:

  • Matsuoka was dressed in a black T-shirt and brown pants and wore a cap and glasses.
  • He started off by apologising again to sponsors, everyone in Fukushima Prefecture, fans who had been supporting TOKIO for the past 31 years and all associates who they worked with in various programmes for the situation. With the liquidation of Kabushikigaisha TOKIO, they are in the midst of settling contracts with sponsors and various work parties following the disbanding of the band. Once everything is settled, the company will be officially shut down.
  • With regard to why the decision was made to disband in just 5 days after Kokubun’s issue came to light, this move was made to limit the impact and inconvenience caused to their work associates and fans to the minimum. Matsuoka and Joshima Shigeru i.e. Leader met up in person on 24 June to reach the decision and called Kokubun on the spot to convey this.
  • Matsuoka admitted that when he and Leader saw the NTV press conference which exposed Kokubun’s issue, they came to the realisation that they wouldn’t be able to protect TOKIO nor work using this name anymore. Honestly speaking, Matsuoka’s first thought was “not again, how many times has this been?” and also felt embarrassed because the band already had two members leave due to different reasons. In fact, when they set up Kabushikigaisha TOKIO, that was done with the understanding that if ever any one of the trio had to leave for any reason, that would mark the end of TOKIO. While it was a painful decision to make, this was a move which could not be avoided given the circumstances. While it was a cowardly and shameful manner of how TOKIO came to an end and they all felt really sorry to their fans, he stressed that this was something that they didn’t want to do but had to go ahead with it.
  • When asked if there is a possibility that Matsuoka and Leader could meet fans again in person via other formats in future, Matsuoka said that assuming if they are forgiven for what happened in the future, they might be able to do something. However, at this stage, there is nothing they can really do and it is not in their position right now to even think about sounding fans on how they feel towards this kind of proposition.
  • As for the current condition of Kokubun, Matsuoka revealed that he was in the doldrums and feeling remorseful for what happened. He also felt that Kokubun himself would have wanted more than anyone else to talk about what happened in front of the media because the latter is a man with a strong sense of responsibility. However, it was unlikely that Kokubun would be able to say anything even if he appeared in public given the confidentiality restriction so Matsuoka decided to be the one speaking up instead. This was also because Matsuoka was the PR director for their company.
  • Although Kokubun kept apologising to him and Leader, Matsuoka didn’t think that this wasn’t an issue which could be brushed off easily. When he and Leader told Kokubun about the decision to disband TOKIO over the phone, all Kokubun could do was to apologise repeatedly. Considering that they had spent 36 years of their lives together, Matsuoka recounted that he had never heard Kokubun sound like that before. And since they are no longer band mates, he doesn’t think that whatever he says now would matter to Kokubun anymore.
  • When asked about the relationships between the 5 ex-TOKIO members including Nagase Tomoya and Yamaguchi Tatsuya who left for their own reasons, Matsuoka felt that they each had their own ways of showing their love for the band. While they have not spoken to one another on this matter, he believed that Nagase and Yamaguchi would both have their own perspectives on this situation. Matsuoka and Leader did not contact Nagase and Yamaguchi on this and vice versa.
  • As for his relationship with Kokubun going forward, Matsuoka said that although they have become ex-band mates now, he doesn’t think that this will mean the end of their longtime friendship even though he knows very well that there may be people who won’t look on this favourably. He and Leader are still contacting Kokubun time to time recently for business matters only.
  • As for the question whether Matsuoka knew what Kokubun had done, he said that it was meaningless to pursue the reason for what led to this state of things. If asking for the answer to what Kokubun did would help salvage the situation, Matsuoka would do so but to him, dealing with the present situation matters more than delving into what caused it.
  • Due to the privacy protection measures, nobody including Leader and him and their staff members knew what had exactly happened and when the problematic actions took place. However, in response to media rumours that this may be related to DASH-mura, Matsuoka said that this was untrue.
  • With regard to recent media reports suggesting that Kokubun had engaged in bullying of fellow TOKIO members, Matsuoka denied this vehemently and stressed that there was absolutely no bullying within the group. He said that he was bewildered when he heard about such media reports and lamented how the unfounded rumours of late have been fueling lots of ridiculous theories that are going around.
  • When asked if Leader and Matsuoka would continue visiting and interacting with Fukushima Prefecture which had deep and longtime ties with TOKIO, he said that they would definitely do so.
  • As for the individual career plans of him and Leader, Matsuoka said that they are focusing on their respective projects on hand and the procedures to end their company for now. After the dust has settled and they take time to consider their options, they will then announce that in due course. The two of them will also be speaking to their 4 employees to find out their preferences and take the responsibility to secure re-employment for them if they wish.

TOKIO's Kokubun Taichi goes on an indefinite hiatus due to supposed "compliance violations"

This piece of news saddens me because it has to do with TOKIO, one of my favourite Japanese artists who I have been supporting for a long time since I came to know about them in 1996.

Over the last decade or so, the band has already gone through a number of hurdles and challenges which led to its members leaving one by one, be it voluntarily or not. The problem this time though is, nobody is saying what exactly is the issue other than it's a compliance violation. This will no doubt fuel lots of speculation and rumours swirling around that could be potentially even more damaging than the actual reason for Kokubun Taichi having to go on an indefinite hiatus. What could be serious enough to warrant him being taken off the shows but not to the extent of having a criminal complaint filed against him? So it's something that morally incorrect but legally OK?

I just cannot wrap my head around this.

I think everyone is waiting for an answer but whether there will be one or if the official explanation reveals the reason in its entirety, only time will tell.

Here's the timeline of what's known so far based on various news reports (all dates/times in JST):

27 May 2025
NTV was said to have uncovered the multiple incidents involving Kokubun's compliance violations and shared information on this with relevant departments within the TV station. It then engaged external lawyers to conduct investigations. (Sports Hochi)

19 June 2025
Rumours of Kokubun quitting from his TV shows started circulating late in the evening and that official announcements will be made on the following day. The reason for the move was said to be due to "serious compliance violations" but at this point, nobody knew what exactly was the reason. (Sponichi Annex)

20 June 2025
- NTV's president Fukuda Hiroyuki announced on 20 June 2025 during a last-minute press conference at 1pm that the TV station had ascertained "multiple compliance violations in the past" by Kokubun thus the decision was made to take him off the variety show "The Tetsuwan DASH".
  • He had been appearing in this programme as a member of TOKIO since it started in 1995.
  • Fukuda revealed that he was informed of this matter on 27 May 2025 and that following the investigation by external lawyers, it was deemed that it would be inappropriate for Kokubun to continue appearing in the show.
  • However, despite persistent questioning by the media at the press conference, Fukuda refused to reveal details of what happened or when it happened, citing privacy concerns.
  • This attracted criticism from the media and online that the press conference did not answer any of the critical questions and was meaningless other than a display of NTV cutting off Kokubun first before his agency and company made his hiatus announcement.
  • What was only ascertained during the press conference was that this matter had nothing to do with anti-social forces, involved multiple people but was not a "large-scale case".
  • It was reported that an emergency board of directors meeting was called earlier in the morning to approve this decision.

- Kabushikigaisha TOKIO and STARTO ENTERTAINMENT released their statements announcing the indefinite hiatus of Kokubun:
  • It had come to their attention that Kokubun Taichi had been involved in multiple incidents of compliance violations. After discussing this issue with him and as a way of taking responsibility to reflect on his actions, he will be going on an indefinite hiatus with effect from 20 June 2025.
  • In the statement from Kabushikigaisha TOKIO which was signed off by the president cum TOKIO's leader Joshima Shigeru, it apologised to work associates and fans for the sudden announcement and causing them worry and inconvenience as a result.
  • As of now, they have not made any decisions on what to do in future and all queries on this matter should be directed to STARTO ENTERTAINMENT which the company has a group agent contract with because Kabushikigaisha TOKIO does not have a designated channel to handle such queries.
  • Kokubun himself apologised for the concern and inconvenience caused to everyone and that his lack of self-awareness and complacency despite having worked in the entertainment industry for so many years were what led to his inadequate actions. At the moment, the period of his hiatus has not been fixed and he will take time to reflect on himself and change his ways.
  • STARTO ENTERTAINMENT's statement was similar to that of Kabushikigaisha TOKIO's which mentioned Kokubun's hiatus and apologised for the sudden announcement and inconvenience caused to everyone.

The work situation of Kokubun
The following information was compiled by Sponichi Annex and FLASH:
  • Co-vice president of Kabushikigaisha TOKIO and in charge of planning since April 2021
  • President of TOKIO-BA, a new project under Kabushikigaisha TOKIO. Joshima Shigeru & Matsuoka Masahiro are the vice presidents for TOKIO-BA
  • TOKIO entered into an agency contract with STARTO ENTERTAINMENT in April 2024
  • Had 6 regular shows on TV and radio i.e. The Tetsuwan DASH (NTV), Danshi Gohan (TV Tokyo), Sekai kurabetemitara (TBS), TOKIO Terrace (Mainichi Housou), Kokubun Taichi no THE CRAFTSMEN (BS10) and Kokubun Taichi Radio Box (JFN).
  • CM: Japan Net Takata Fukushima Prefecture "Fukushima Pride" - Japan Net announced on 20 June that it had taken off his CMs.
  • It had been announced on 12 June that Kokubun is to host TV Tokyo's "TV Tokyo Ongakusai 2025 ~ Natsu ~" in July.
  • Kabushikigaisha TOKIO had already informed various TV stations and work partners of Kokubun's resignation from these shows.
  • Despite TOKIO not doing any music-related activities in recent years following the departure of Yamaguchi Tatsuya and Nagase Tomoya in 2018 and 2021 respectively, Kokubun was still involved in making music as recently as in March this year. He was the producer (using the name Mitazono Kaoru) for the digital single "clock" by special unit Shima Shigeko & Hikaru i.e. Joshima and Inoo Kei which was the theme song for the drama "Kaseifu no Mitazono" starring Matsuoka.
  • Over the past 4 years since the official LINE accounts of Kabushikigaisha TOKIO and Kokubun were set up on 10 June 2021, he had been sending daily morning greeting messages without fail through his official account between 6am and 7am to his followers which exceeds 128,000. However, the last message he sent was on 19 June and there was nothing for today i.e. 20 June which attracted speculation online prior to the hiatus announcement this afternoon.

ARASHI's announcement about their final concert tour in spring 2026 and ending group activities as ARASHI for good

ARASHI has spoken...at long last!

On their official social media accounts today, the group has finally confirmed its plans going forward. While it may not be exactly what fans would like to see, I personally am very glad that there is closure coming our way rather than keep wondering what's going to happen. Ideally, I would have loved to see them in action but I guess being outside of Japan and not a member of their fanclub would mean that this is impossible...UNLESS they do an Asian tour and I manage to get tickets.

Since their statements are in Japanese and English, you may wish to read that directly on these platforms:

For the benefit of those who want to get a quick update on the key points in the long statement, here is the summary:
  • The group has always regretted not being able to perform in public in the last year before they went on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic almost four and a half years ago.
  • They will be doing a final concert tour as ARASHI next spring i.e. 2026.
  • The group will end all activities as ARASHI after this tour wraps up. As such, their fan club will close officially in May 2026.
  • The members had been discussing the topic of working together as a group again over the last 18 months. However, they were unable to reach a consensus or arrive at an easy conclusion since their individual circumstances had changed during this period. Nonetheless, they still want to be able to express their gratitude to fans for the last time which they couldn't do so previously. They didn't think that it was possible for them to resume group activities for the tour only and to go back on an indefinite hiatus again after that.
  • Priority for the concert tickets will be given to current fan club members. As such, new applications for membership will be suspended for the time being.
  • More details on the concert tour will be shared once confirmed.
  • Until the concert tour starts in 2026, the group will continue to deliver as much content as possible for the fan club members in the year ahead starting from the middle of June 2025.

Bunshun's latest scoop on the alleged extramarital affair of Tanaka Kei & Nagano Mei + her rumoured relationship with "Caster" co-star Kim Mu-jun

This big Bunshun bombshell of today actually started making its rounds online since last night.

Usually, when a celebrity's name becomes a trending word on social media like X, it can only mean one of these things:
  • Something good has happened or the person's work attracts positive responses
  • The person is involved in some negative news.
As such, when I happened to see Nagano Mei's name trending on X last night, I somehow had the hunch that it should be the second scenario. The reason being, yesterday was not the day when "Caster" was shown on TV and I didn't recall her having any recent movie releases.

As it turned out, the reason why her name was trending was because of the following post which Bunshun posted on their account last night which said that they were going to release a scoop at 12 noon today (JST) about an affair between a "very popular heroine" who is appearing in an ongoing drama and a "big name actor":

As of today at 4.30pm JST, there are as many as 31 million views of this post, 1,100 comments and 5,300 reposts which shows how much attention this piece of news has attracted.

I was truly surprised to see Nagano being named as the heroine in question but what was more unexpected was that the guy said to be having an affair with her is Tanaka Kei. No offence to him and his fans but honestly, I don't really see him as a big name actor...as yet. And I remember them acting together as father and daughter before and Tanaka is a good 15 years older than Nagano. Much as they may be on good terms, it was a bit difficult to imagine them being linked in this manner especially since Tanaka has been married for so long and has 2 kids. As such, I was quite skeptical about them being named by netizens as the people involved in this scandal and didn't want to post about it until the news was revealed by Bunshun today.

What's interesting to note is that, while Nagano's name became a trending keyword last night, Tanaka didn't. It may be due to the fact that he isn't a stranger to controversy so people might not have been so shocked to see his name linked to such a scandal. As seen from some of the comments, many were saying that it was a matter of time for him to do something like this, not whether he would be capable of doing it. Most recently, his big party for more than 10 people held in 2021 during the COVID pandemic at that time when close contact and big events like these were discouraged to stop the infection from spreading attracted lots of criticism. Tanaka himself came down with COVID as well which meant that he had to take time off work and risked spreading the virus further through the people who were with him at that time. On the other hand, Nagano's image was comparatively much cleaner so I guess the shock from seeing her name being implicated in this kind of negative news was greater.

The best is yet to come.

If you thought that the affair is already raising eyebrows, imagine the double whammy of being told that Nagano may be two-timing Tanaka with another actor. This part was not mentioned in Bunshun's post last night so it was something totally unexpected. What's more, the actor concerned is Kim Mu-jun who is currently working together with Nagano in "Caster".

Now, I don't know which is worse - the alleged affair or the two-timing?

Since Bunshun's article is behind a paywall, the key points about the story are collected based on various sources such as other media outlets which reproduced parts of the story and netizens who shared screenshots of the article. If you are interested, you can sign up for Bunshun's subscription to gain access.

The Alleged Affair & The Unexpected Catch
- Nagano and Tanaka met after working together in the 2021 movie "Soshite, baton wa watasareta". According to an "associate", their relationship began last Sep after they reunited at a meal gathering in July for the first time in a long while. Back when they were filming the movie in 2020, there was nothing unusual observed in their interactions.

- Due to this scandal, the fact that they both announced having tested positive for COVID in July 2021 within a span of 3 days from each other became talked about again and fueled much speculation on the state of their relationship from back then.

- Bunshun reportedly received a tip-off last autumn about Nagano and Tanaka and subsequently caught them going to a theme park together in Dec 2024 and him picking her up from the TV station on 7 Apr 2025 after she knocked off and them going off to spend the evening together.

- While Bunshun's target was initially Nagano and Tanaka, they unexpectedly found that Kim Mu-jun who is Nagano's co-star in "Caster" also went on a date with her on 15 April and spent the night at her place. Up until Kim left her house on 18 April to return to South Korea, he was found to have been staying there on consecutive nights. The explanation given by both sides was that they were never alone together and that Nagano's mum was there as well.

- Later in the same evening, Nagano went to meet Tanaka at 7pm for a 3-hour meal at a high-class izakaya before going to a bar in Roppongi. They returned to Nagano's apartment around 3am.

- Around 3am on 19 April 2025, Tanaka was caught in a drunken state at the entrance of Nagano's apartment block with her by his side. He reportedly spent the night at her place and left around 11am the following day. In response to this, Nagano claimed that her mother was also in the apartment so they were not alone there.

- When Tanaka was interviewed in person by Bunshun as he left Nagano's apartment, he denied that he was romantically involved with Nagano but acknowledged for his behaviour that caused this misunderstanding. His somewhat conflicting answers also gave much room for imagination on the nature of their relationship which seemed to be too close for comfort in the case of a married man
(Just my personal opinion here: It may have been best for him to shut up and not make the situation worse with his choice of words and way of answering the reporter.)
  • Tanaka insisted that he and Nagano are just very good friends.
  • He apologised for causing inconvenience and trouble to her simply because of her helping him when he was drunk.
  • When asked if he and Nagano are in a romantic relationship, Tanaka said that "they can't have such a relationship. However, there were times when he did think that he would enter into a relationship with her if it was possible in reality". In his exact words: 男女の関係にはなれないです。なれない、なれないです。なりたいのにって言われたら、そりゃなれるもんならなりたいと思う時もありますけど
  • When asked if he and Nagano were together during Halloween, he admitted that they did meet but there were other friends around. As the reporter probed further if the meeting was at Nagano's house, Tanaka did not give a clear answer.
  • When asked if their relationship had ended, Tanaka replied that it was difficult to say. However, when the reporter mentioned very specifically that the two of them had decided to put some distance between them since April this year as first initiated by Nagano, Tanaka was very flustered and kept asking the reporter how they came to know about this matter.
  • The problem was, Tanaka was caught spending the night at Nagano's apartment as recent as 19 April. As such, it was clear that his answer above was contradictory.
  • While Tanaka apologised for causing inconvenience to Nagano by spending the night at her place in a drunken state, he denied initially that he had a spare key to her apartment but he inadvertently admitted that he had "returned the key to her a long time ago". This suggested that he indeed was in possession of the spare key to Nagano's place, albeit probably not now anymore.
  • Tanaka admitted that his wife did not know about him spending the night at Nagano's place and acknowledged that it was inappropriate for him to do so and let a junior take care of him when he was drunk.
- With regard to the Halloween party in question and to substantiate their claims in the report, Bunshun included the following photos taken in Oct 2024.

- In response to the news, Tanaka's agency released a statement that Tanaka denied having an affair and the agency believes him and will not conduct any investigation or is worried about this situation since they know that he has a habit of drinking with work colleagues. Although they do acknowledge that he can't hold his liquor well and yet still likes to drink and had gotten into some embarrassing situations in the past because of his drunken state, he had never been involved in a romantic scandal like this and is working hard in his acting career. However, the issue this time stems from a misunderstanding due to his actions which could be misinterpreted and viewed negatively. They admitted that he was at fault as well and had firmly requested Tanaka to be more mindful of his actions.

- Tanaka also issued another written explanation to Bunshun to clarify his stance after the in-person interview done when he left Nagano's place. He revealed that his friends had reminded him before that it was problematic for him to meet Nagano so often. That was when he first realised that this could be an issue for both of them even though they really enjoyed each other's company. He said that if he remembered correctly, what he meant by "it had ended" when he talked to the reporter was that he decided to stop meeting her so frequently. As he was still hungover at the time of the interview, he said that this was why his words did not convey accurately what he meant.
As for the part about having her house's spare key, Tanaka clarified that she did give him the carpark key to her apartment block so as to make it convenient for her friends to park there when they came over. However, he had already returned that to her long ago.

- As for Nagano's agency, they released a statement to deny that she was romantically involved with Tanaka and they just have a close relationship as senior-junior who meet up for meals and drinks. Nagano also has the habit of inviting her friends of both genders to her house for gatherings so this was not something restricted to Tanaka or Kim. However, what happened did create a misunderstanding so they have issued a firm warning for Nagano to be more mindful of her behaviour and apologised to all work parties and sponsors for causing worry and inconvenience to them.
With regard to her relationship with Kim, the agency also denied that they are dating and just colleagues.

- Meanwhile, Kim's agency also denied that he and Nagano are an item.

- Perhaps the immediate concern is how sponsors and work associates such as TV stations would see this scandal. Based on the estimation of Nagano currently holding 11 CM deals, the potential financial damage including loss of the deal and compensation could go up to JPY 700m. Sponsors can also choose to cancel CM deals or hold off the broadcast of CMs for the time being until the scandal dies down. Then it will be the TV stations which have to decide what to do next depending on the sponsors' preferences.

- According to Bengoshi.com News, the spouse i.e. Sakura in this case has the right to launch a civil suit against Nagano if it is proven later that the affair is indeed true. The market rate for damages to be paid to the spouse depends on whether the marriage ended up in divorce or not. If the couple divorces, the range will be from JPY 1.5 million to JPY 2.5 million. Otherwise, it will be up to JPY 1.5m. However, damages may not be awarded if it is proven that the other party did not know about the existing marriage.
Given that his marital status is widely known, there is no way Nagano can claim ignorance of this fact especially since they had worked together before. Then again, even for celebrities, the market rate for damages would not surge to hundreds of millions though.

- The curse of Prada strikes again? Coincidentally or not, Nagano was named last Sep as a brand ambassador for Prada which has seen a string of its ambassadors end up in trouble over various reasons. The most recent example would be Kim Soo-hyun who is currently in the midst of his dating controversy with the late Kim Sae-ron since the time she was still a teenager and had his endorsement deal cancelled in just three months.

Just my personal view here:
I think the phrase "too close for comfort" probably sums up the root cause of this scandal best. Men and women can be good friends but there is a certain boundary to observe especially when one or both parties are attached. Letting a married man stay overnight at your place and him not letting his wife know where he was when he failed to return home - no matter how you look at it, it's hard not to let your imagination run wild.
Given the nature of their occupations, being mindful of how they are perceived is even more important.
Holding hands - I don't know how you can justify that.
There have been countless examples of how young promising actresses go down the path of doom because of their involvement with a married colleague, whether it was true or not. In Japan, the scales are tipped even more unfairly against women because the guy always gets out unscathed after a while but the girl gets banished to the depths of hell. Even though both may be at fault. While there may have been some women who do get out of these scandals, that's the minority.
I find it a bit hard to understand and see why this kind of thing keeps happening over and over again despite the painful examples seen so far.
My biggest wish now is that "Caster" will not be affected because of what happened. I'm sure more people will be tuning in from now on but most likely, it's out of curiousity to see how Nagano and Kim interact on screen after the scandal. That's a shame though because the drama potentially can do well on its own merit.
I'm also curious, how would Oguri Shun react to this since he is the CEO of Tanaka's agency?

The challenges in the hands-free and total control approaches of artiste management as seen from Hirosue Ryoko's & Nagayama Kento's recent scandals

Following Hirosue Ryoko's recent affair scandal and the arrest of Nagayama Kento for marijuana possession last week, the topic about the right amount of control and intervention in artiste management is back into the limelight. There have been some articles discussing if these scandals could have been avoided had their agencies been more aware of what their artistes were up to and stepped in before they got out of hand. Of course, there is only so much that an agency can do in keeping their artistes out of trouble but ultimately, these artistes are adults and should be personally held responsible for heir actions.

Daily Shincho published an article on 16 June 2023 talking about Hirosue's problematic behaviour over the years along with her management's unusual stance of protecting her image at all costs. Back in 2014, I also translated the articles about her alleged affair with Sato Takeru. Here are some key highlights from these sources which may give a clearer perspective into how her management situation had evolved over the past 20+ years:

Coincidentally, the part about how Hirosue was having her way with no one to give her a reality check and her agency's zealousness in covering up her behaviour with a perfect image corresponds somewhat to Candle Jun's claims that their marriage life suffered partly due to the expectations and restrictions placed on them by her agency and family.

* In the 27 Feb 2014 issue of "Josei Seven", it claimed that Hirosue Ryoko and Sato Takeru were allegedly having an affair as she was caught spending the night at the apartment block where he lived at. Sato was 9 years younger than her and she was already married to Candle Jun at that time. Prior to that, they were said to have visited a spa together. However, both parties denied the report at that time.

* In response to this affair allegation, Inoue Yoshihisa, the president of her agency Flamme, made the following comment in the 13 Mar 2014 issue of "Shuukan Shincho":
"There are as many as 200 apartments in the block where Sato lives at. You can't claim that Hirosue went to his apartment just based on that report."
A veteran reporter commented that Inoue's argument was a display of his desperate attempt to protect his artiste at all costs despite the photos taken when she visited Sato's apartment block. It was believed that Hirosue had promised not to do the same thing again thus Inoue went out of his way to speak up for her.

* This was in stark contrast to what happened to Karata Erika who was exposed 3 years ago for having an affair with the then-married Higashide Masahiro. Flamme had issued a statement saying that Karata was sorry for what she did and she was repenting for her weakness and stupidity. It pledged to prevent a recurrence by disciplining her. However, Karata herself never commented nor apologised publicly on what she did.
This then led to an influx of calls to the agency's PR department which ultimately chose to ignore all media and public queries when it got too overwhelming. Over time, the agency probably thought that the storm died down and they managed to get away with the backlash despite not doing anything concrete.
3 years on, Karata may have returned to being an actress in movies but the damage has been done and she still isn't being offered any roles in TV dramas as compared to her then-lover who managed to get back to work in a few months.

* Perhaps it was from this past experience that Flamme had initially issued a strongly-worded statement that they had given Hirosue a stern warning for her thoughtless actions when she first denied the affair. However, once Bunshun published another report in the following week with her handwritten love letters to Toba Shuusaku and further details of their affair, the agency had no choice but to apologise and put Hirosue on indefinite suspension. If not for the damning subsequent revelation and initial denial, the issue could have just ended with a warning to Hirosue.

* A look into Hirosue's relationship with Flamme could probably offer an explanation as to why her agency treats her differently from other artistes. When she debuted in 1995, she joined Geiei Production which was where Inoue first became her manager. A few years later in 1998, Inoue set up Flamme together with Hirosue who had shot to stardom very quickly in the late 1990s. Being the agency's biggest earner and most well-known artiste, it was not a surprise that she enjoyed special treatment. However, her psychological state gradually became affected once she got busier and the expectations on her to maintain this youthful and innocent image became increasingly harder to maintain since this was not really in line with her true character.
It was around the same period that rumours of her relationships with models and actors and going out to party at nightclubs became a regular thing. Problematic behaviour such as perpetual lateness on filming sets, talking on her mobile phone while keeping her co-stars waiting during rehearsals or taking taxis on long journeys without paying started to hog the headlines.
Whenever she got into trouble, it was always Inoue who apologised and got her out of the mess she created. Besides the obvious reason that the agency's survival depended on their top artiste, he also owed a debt of gratitude to her for having a part in Flamme's success as it grew into a mid-size agency with many actresses. As such, it was not surprising that Inoue had to resort to extreme measures to protect her from the scandal with Sato back in 2014.

* However, Flamme's overzealous stance in protecting Hirosue was seen as a major factor in the situation getting out of hand this time. Bunshun's report was extremely detailed with the handwritten love letters and information of her rendezvous meetings with Toba. Due to the fact that this was the second time that she was caught in an affair scandal and both happened while Candle Jun was away from home due to work, the situation this time may have been prevented if the agency had been stricter with her when the first scandal happened almost 10 years ago.
As such, it appears that Hirosue was not the controllable type and her agency had knowingly and purposely adopted a hands-free approach in managing her.

On the other hand, Nagayama Kento's situation seems to be that he was already getting out of control prior to being caught and the agency had no way of keeping him in check. As seen from the reports that came out soon after his arrest, his agency PAPADO had no idea that he was arrested until they saw the news in the morning. Logically speaking, an artiste who gets into trouble should contact his/her manager or family so that they can go into damage control and get legal help for the artiste. The thing is, did the police not allow him to contact people following the arrest or did he choose not to contact his agency voluntarily since the relationship between them seemed to be on the rocks?

Secondly, there were allegations that he was not cooperative about doing PR work for his projects. On one hand, it is a reflection that Nagayama may have been unprofessional about doing what he should do but it also means that his agency was not able to "control" him when it comes to work. I would expect that the contracts would specify PR commitments for the cast even for supporting cast members. In "Reversal Orchestra", he may not be a first or second-tier supporting actor in terms of airtime but his character was pretty significant as a potential member of the love triangle with the leads and someone who affected the heroine to a great extent. However, he was conspicuously absent from the PR tour so I was wondering then what had happened to him. If it was stated in the contract that he had to participate in PR but he willfully chose not to and the agency couldn't do anything about it, that goes to show that they are really unable to manage him effectively. If there was no contractual obligation to do PR, it is no wonder that he may be able to get away with his behaviour even if the agency had tried its best to convince him to cooperate.

Honestly speaking, whatever the artistes do in their private lives is entirely their own responsibility. The agencies can only intervene as far as the artistes allow them to but that's more applicable to the big names who have a say. Usually, the artistes who are just starting out or haven't reached a certain status may find themselves being imposed with certain regulations by their agencies so as to protect their images and keep them out of trouble. For example, many idols were imposed with the no-dating restriction but once they got to a certain age or left their groups, this no longer became an issue. In that sense, this is probably a necessary step for risk management when it comes to managing artistes although it may sometimes be viewed as over control and excessive interference with the artiste's private life.

However, once an artiste gets too big to manage, this is where there is a fine line between giving them the freedom to do what they want and over-intervening with their affairs. In recent years, one notable trend is that whenever there are reports of artistes being involved in relationships, the standard phrase has become "since this is their private matter, we will leave it to them to handle". The agencies tend not to answer to these reports on behalf of their artistes and also not try to deny, reject or object to these relationships, at least in public. This was quite different from the past where some would issue strongly-worded denials or lie through their teeth that the parties involved were just friends even with photographic evidence.

On the artiste's part, being successful equals to having a say. Of course it wouldn't feel good to have the agency interfering in your private life so there is bound to be some pushback compared to the early days when the artiste just started out. It can be difficult finding that balance between the right amount of control by the agency and the right amount of autonomy that the artiste enjoys. However, when that freedom is abused or there is no one who can keep the artiste grounded, this hands-free management style may backfire on everyone when the artiste gets into trouble.

On hindsight, it also felt as if Flamme didn't really learn its lesson in crisis management - both from Hirosue's 2014 scandal and Karata Erika's episode 3 years ago. Just sitting out the storm by waiting, playing dead or ignoring the issue is not going to solve the problem. The situation with Hirosue would probably not have gotten to this state if there was no initial denial on her part. As you may have read from the opening paragraph in Bunshun's second report about their love letters, it does give the impression that Bunshun was very offended and annoyed with Hirosue's lie that their report was not true. And that's perhaps why they were very quick to retaliate in the strongest manner possible. Regardless of whether the matter with Sato was true or not, the fact that she had 2 affair scandals during the course of her 13-year marriage with Candle June also meant that people would see her in a harsher light.

As for Nagayama, his situation offers a look into the possible scenario when you have an artiste who is on bad terms with his agency and cannot be managed effectively. One may argue that if PAPADO had managed to keep him under control for work matters, it would have an impact on how he behaved in private. The thing is, the company can only go so far in managing him and anything beyond that could come across as over-intervention. This also coincides with what Candle Jun had talked about - even the spouse of the celebrity must behave in a certain way dictated by the agency. Ultimately, even if the agency keeps Nagayama on his toes for work, he can still destroy everything with one single action of his own choice in his private life. And since there are rumours pointing to the fact that Nagayama was supposed to leave PAPADO this month, it may explain why there was a lack of active involvement and interest in managing him because most companies won't bother spending time and resources on an employee serving notice after submitting his resignation letter. This is especially so if Nagayama really does have the intention to leave and has made that clear to his agency.

People management is a very difficult thing to do in the workplace. What complicates this further in artiste management is, the artiste is both the employee and the "product" of the agency. On one hand, the agency has to manage the artiste effectively in order for him/her to make it in showbiz since its survival depends on the success of the artiste. To prevent defects or damage to the value of their priced "product", the agency often has in to step to eliminate undesirable elements from affecting their artistes. However, it also has to keep its employee happy so that they can keep him/her for as long as possible. These conflicting stands will mean that the management has to strike a fine balance between regulating the employee's behaviour and keeping the artiste happy. And when this happens, it definitely won't be surprising to see an agency being unable to take a firm stand against bad behaviour from its artiste since its survival also depends on this very "employee".

The press conference of Candle Jun in response to his wife Hirosue Ryoko's infidelity scandal

Just when you thought that the scandal would die down after Hirosue Ryoko's admission of her affair...the next installment in the saga came in an unexpected manner.

Perhaps if Hirosue did admit straightaway that she was having an affair, things might not have gotten this messy because the following week after her denial, Bunshun published the private letters and exchange diary written by her and her lover Toba Shuusaku. This was said to be the key factor that led to her admission since the proof of her infidelity was out in the open. It makes me wonder though - who had access to these private correspondence and leaked it to the media? And is Bunshun going to stop at this revelation or go ahead with more private revelations?

It may be common for the cheated-on spouses to speak up for their cheating husbands or wives in the Japanese entertainment world but most of the time, they issue written statements to the media only instead of appearing in person. As such, for them to come out into the open voluntarily like what Hirosue's husband Candle Jun did on 18 Jun 2023, it was definitely very unusual in more ways than one.

First of all, he was said to have organised the event on his own and there were no staff members present on site so he even had to be at the reception for the registration of the reporters. In addition, there was no host to help with the proceedings of the event so he was effectively both the MC and interviewee. Last but not least, the reason or rather purpose of this press conference was seemingly about giving his version of the story about his marriage and his wife's affair but it was intertwined with various topics like his thoughts about peace, disaster recovery efforts and SDGs so it makes people wonder what his true intention was.

For those who are interested in reading the full transcript of what he said, you can view Nikkansports' report here.

Frankly speaking, my first thought after reading about this press conference was, is he trying to help Hirosue clean up her tattered image or put himself in a more favourable position for future divorce proceedings? By giving all these details about their troubled marriage and painting her as a somewhat emotionally unstable person who was a repeat offender when it came to affairs, it certainly doesn't help in repairing their strained relationship nor make it possible for them to reconcile. And much as he tried to say that he wants to protect their children including the eldest child from Hirosue's first marriage, all these details will no doubt remain in the public domain for a long time and affect the kids as they grow older.

On the other hand, for him to go to this extent and washing dirty linen in public, it comes across as a desperate attempt to clear the air about the misunderstandings about him and her and save their marriage especially since he mentioned death threats, rumours and false allegations made against him. Compared to Hirosue, he is not exactly a celebrity and may not have the same resources to give his version of their story in the public domain. As such, a lot of what is known about him and their marriage comes from media reports which may not be accurate or in line with the truth. And since the situation facing him may be quite dire now, this could be why he had decided to step out at this moment.

No doubt at this stage, it is his word against hers for now until Hirosue herself decides to go public with her version of the story. I don't think that her agency will allow her to self-destruct like that though because they probably won't be able to control what she says and the narrative if they do a press conference. As such, the preferred handling method should be letting the storm die down over time. However, with Candle Jun stepping out like this and giving first-hand information away so freely, this storm probably won't end so soon especially since it is developing from a relatively straightforward affair scandal to one with a troubled marriage exposed for all to see.

My purpose of translating this is not to take sides or criticise one side for being more at fault.

What I thought was especially worth highlighting among the various points Candle Jun made was what the spouses and family members of celebrities have to bear with to stay outside the limelight and yet have untruths being circulated against their own will but they have no way of setting things straight. And when something happens to the celebrity, these people are the ones who may have it a lot worse but nobody knows about their pains. Especially since most media outlets paint an entirely different picture of Hirosue now as compared to what her husband says (the good things about her), the gap between these two extremes only serve to divide people further as to how they view this issue. As such, please do not get overly affected or upset over what may be said by Candle Jun or the media because it is normal that we will all have differing opinions even if we are looking at the same thing.

And there are always two sides to the coin.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Given the length of the press conference, I will just list down the key points pertaining to the scandal and their marriage.

* He apologised for the inconvenience and trouble which his wife caused to everyone.

* Clarified that Hirosue has never neglected her duties as a mother despite what some media reports claimed. She is a great wife to him and the best mother to their three children. She does her best for everyone in the family and is a wonderful woman.

* He has always known that his words would be misinterpreted and/or taken out of context ever since he married Hirosue in 2010. However, this wasn't the sole fault of the media because he himself was also not careful with his words. As such, it created the misunderstanding that he would "do something" to retaliate against his wife's affair scandal when he made a public comment on 11 Jun that everyone should "look forward" to what he was going to do in the near future although he didn't mean it that way.

* When he first met Hirosue, she was emotionally unstable but had gone through a complete change after marriage to become a good wife and mother. She used to contact him almost every night by phone calls and letters right from the beginning which he was happy about but also worried about her young son at that time. He suggested bringing her son along when they went out. At that time, the boy was very resistant to any adult men who came close to his mother and would kick and beat these people so it was important for them to spend time together and for the boy to accept him. Candle Jun revealed that he was friends with the boy's birth father and promised the latter that he would raise the boy well.

* Despite what others said in the media, they were a happy family.  However, at the time when they got married, her agency's president made him promise that he would not release any photos of them together or talk about their family in public. Although he was not able to understand why he had to do that, he was aware that his unconventional appearance including his looks, tattoos, ear piercing would probably reflect negatively on Hirosue. And in order to meet the expectations of her agency and family, he stopped going out at night, hanging out in entertainment districts, taking on jobs which required him to work at night and drinking outside because he didn't want the media to write about anything controversial which could hurt her and their children. This was in huge contrast to his pre-marriage lifestyle.

* As he doesn't know the entertainment industry well, his own guess as to why Hirosue's behaviour changed drastically was due to the pressure of meeting expectations from everyone around her especially since she debuted at a very young age. And being someone who expects a lot from herself, she tried to deal with all these which ended up causing damage to her psychological health.

* Candle Jun went to great lengths to state that Hirosue was a very hands-on mother and would do her best for the household and kids without paying too much attention to her appearance e.g. no make-up, no perfume or not doing much for beauty. However, when she was under immense pressure, she would suddenly dress in a loud manner, put on heavy make-up and be unable to sleep at night. She developed the habit of writing down her thoughts and had to be in constant contact with anyone so as to feel at ease.

* Despite her problematic behaviour multiple times, he was constantly told by her agency to tolerate this and hide it from the public. As such, there was nothing he could do but to look on helplessly from the sidelines. And he felt that the person who had it worst than him or her agency's president when Hirosue behaved like this was her mother. Given that Hirosue would distant herself from anyone who tried to drive some sense into her whenever she behaved strangely, her mother could only look on and bear with the pain of seeing her daughter be like this as she didn't want Hirosue to push her away. No matter what happened, his mother-in-law would just tolerate everything even as she often came over to take care of their kids. Even Hirosue's relatives and friends were unable to say anything frankly to her. However, as Hirosue's behaviour got worse, Candle Jun realised that her family seemed to be supportive of her getting a divorce as the solution to the problem. This was when his mother-in-law asked him if he could at least give a date as to when he would divorce Hirosue when he asked for help to deal with the situation.
It was also then when Hirosue would start going out at night because she viewed Candle Jun's silence to her erratic behaviour as a sign that he was angry at her even though he actually didn't want to agitate her further by speaking out.

* Hirosue's behaviour would escalate for the worse whenever she was told off so she would often make unreasonable requests such as asking people to sing karaoke with her till dawn or go to the beach with her on short notice or stay by her side all the time and not leave her alone. However, Candle Jun couldn't confide in anyone nor seek help because he was made to promise to keep this behaviour a secret.

* Candle Jun said that he had always been receiving intimidating calls, messages and letters ever since he got married. There was even a death threat in 2011 where about 30 police officers came to ask him to cancel a public event in Shibuya but to date, they haven't been able to find the culprit nor know the motive.

* The couple's second son and youngest daughter did not know that their eldest brother's father is not Candle Jun until this affair scandal broke. They had planned to tell the younger children about this when they grow older so for this to be known in such a way, it was difficult and he worried about how they would be affected even though they are innocent parties in this issue. He also felt bad that his neighbours, both at his residence and office, were so concerned and worried for him but thankful for their words of encouragement. He called upon everyone including the media and netizens to be mindful of what they say and report on for the sake of their children as well as the other party's children (Hirosue's lover) because they are innocent victims and should be left out of this. If there is anyone who wants to hear what he has to say, they should come to him directly instead of disturbing the children. He also felt regret over not stopping Hirosue earlier and if he had gone to Toba's place earlier to talk to him, he might have been able to stop this from being revealed in public.

* Currently, Hirosue and the children are staying at somewhere safe arranged by her agency while he sleeps at his office or atelier. Before the scandal broke, Hirosue's mother revealed that Hirosue already wanted to divorce him because she felt that he would get angry when she talked to people on the phone in the middle of the night. Hirosue herself also told him not to come home as she was stressed and couldn't sleep when he was around. He had to move out in the end because she brought up the topic of divorce to their kids even though they hadn't talked about it and asked them to choose between staying with their father or mother. As the sons wanted to protect Hirosue, they chose her on the spot while their daughter kept on crying. The last time they were in contact was the day when she issued her public apology for the affair and she said sorry to him over the phone. (Source)

* There was once in the past when he went to meet another man who Hirosue had an affair with without her knowing. The other party felt that she was abnormal at that time and they reached a settlement then. However, he did not mention who this person was.

* He went to visit Toba's wife to apologise for what happened but stopped short of meeting her because he didn't know how Toba would feel to see him come alone as he saw Toba's car there. Candle Jun then dropped a written message into the mailbox but received no reply. Before he could talk to Toba directly, the latter had already released an apology statement on the same day as Hirosue did. When he searched online for the phone number of Toba's office, he was further angered by the staff who answered the call and even asked him why he was calling despite identifying himself by his real name. The staff claimed that Toba was working remotely elsewhere and there was no further word from him. Candle Jun claimed that he will be consulting a lawyer on the next steps to take. (Source)

* He was fully aware that whatever he said here would destroy what her family has been protecting all this while and may torment Hirosue further. However, he wanted to be able to talk to her directly on what to do for their kids and there was no way he could reach her other than making his thoughts known through this press conference. (Source)

* Candle Jun's real name is Hirosue Jun because he took on her surname after marrying her. In Japan, the wife usually takes on the husband's surname upon marriage but it was reported that he did the reverse. This was so that their eldest son from her previous marriage would not have to change his surname a second time because Candle Jun married his mother.

Former TOKIO member Yamaguchi Tatsuya announces the establishment of his company Yamaguchi Tatsuya Inc. & my thoughts about it

Former TOKIO member Yamaguchi Tatsuya announced the establishment of his company Yamaguchi Tatsuya Inc. as reported in the media on 24 Mar 2023. The company's Twitter page has also been launched. According to the official website, the website went live on 19 Mar while the Twitter page was set up on 24 Mar 2023.

In case you are thinking that he's making a comeback to showbiz, that doesn't seem to be the case as his company will be involved in the following businesses:

* Public speaking events targeted at various types of addicts
* Crisis management seminars for companies
* Adviser on SDG activities
* And others...

The mission statement also suggests that the company won't be involved in any entertainment-related activities:

"Utilizing my own experience gained to date for public speaking activities targeted at those suffering from or affected by alcoholism and all other addictions, in addition to organising crisis management seminars for companies"

It was also revealed on the profile page that Yamaguchi had acquired the following certifications from ASK (non-profit organisation aimed at preventing alcohol & other addiction-related problems. The A in ASK stands for alcohol, the S for citizen, and the K for association in Japanese.) and JADP (Japan Ability Development Promotion Association) last year:

March 2022: ASK - Instructor for the prevention of drink driving
June 2022: JADP - Mental and psychology counsellor
October 2022: Advisor for the prevention and prevention of addictions

There is also a section which lists the activities related to alcoholism prevention and treatment that he had been involved in since January 2021.

In response to this move, Yamaguchi's elder brother released a comment to say that his younger brother had talked about wanting to help both the addicts and the people around them who are suffering as a result. Yamaguchi's ex-wife Takasawa Yuko posted about his company with the caption "We're so proud of you" while his elder son Shotaro who is currently an idol, posted an Instagram story to congratulate his father.

Here is a translation of Yamaguchi's story as posted on his company's website about his fight against alcoholism:

"I had been told by my doctor that I won't be able to recover fully from my alcoholism.

As such, I have decided that I need to deal with this issue on a continual basis for the rest of my life.

There is only one way to overcome this illness and that is, never to drink another drop of alcohol again.

With regard to the incident and accident I caused in 2018 and 2020, I am very sorry for what I did and would like to offer my apologies again.

At present, I continue to reflect deeply on why I had done what I did and live each day cautioning myself against repeating my mistakes.

At that time, I was in a position where I had a strong social influence and yet did things which destroyed the trust of everyone who worked with and was associated with me and made many people unhappy as they came to know about my actions through the media.

No matter how much I apologise, the sins I committed can never disappear.
I can only face up to what I did and live my life going forward without making the same mistakes again.
Please allow me to apologise again for what happened."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a longtime TOKIO fan, what happened to TOKIO's music career as a result of what Yamaguchi Tatsuya did back then is something that is really hard to forgive and forget. There are a lot of "what ifs" that I think of whenever I see TOKIO on screen. What could TOKIO have done during their 25th anniversary year? Would they have stayed together as a band today? Would Nagase Tomoya have left if they could continue their music career?

Of course, looking at the TOKIO now, maybe the crisis back then can be seen in a more positive light:

* If Yamaguchi never got into trouble due to his alcoholism, he would never have taken action to solve this problem and could have continued sinking deeper into this bottomless pit while affecting the people around him adversely. Back then, even the members said that nobody could get Yamaguchi to realise that he had a problem with alcohol.

* Nagase is probably having a good time out there after leaving Johnny's and doing what he wants to.

* And of course, Leader, Taichi and Mabo would probably not have set up their company and do things now that would have been unimaginable back then.

I get that Yamaguchi has repeatedly apologised for what he did and he really wants to do something to contribute to society now with the experience he gained through the alcoholism treatment process. And it's good to see that he has taken the initiative to learn new things and be in a position to give professional advice.

However, as he puts it, this alcoholism issue is here to stay. I don't have any hard feelings against him now but still, I think action speaks louder than words. As such, I am supportive of his efforts but cautious at the same time. By having a company and being in the public eye again probably can help in making sure that the scrutiny will keep him on his toes rather than hiding away at one spot while struggling with his treatment. I hope that he will be able to regain control of his life and do something meaningful through his company in future. All the best!

Inohara Yoshihiko's interview by Chunichi Sports in response to his appointment as the president of Johnny's Island

Following the announcement of Takizawa Hideaki leaving his management positions in Johnny's Jimusho, it was revealed that Inohara Yoshihiko had taken over his position as the president of Johnny's Island from 26 Sep 2022. In this interview by Chunichi Sports, Inohara revealed the events that led to this decision and what he intends to do from now on.

* Takizawa had quit as an artiste in Sep 2018 when the duo "Takki & Tsubasa" disbanded and became the No.2 in command in Johnny's Jimusho. He later took on the position of president in Johnny's Island in Jan 2019 which focuses on the management of Johnny's Jrs. In mid Sep this year, he suddenly expressed his intention to resign but the reason for doing so was not revealed to the public. Despite attempts to change his mind, the agency respected his wishes in the end.

* Inohara was approached by the president Fujishima Julie Keiko to take on the president position in Johnny's Island. Although he usually doesn't get surprised easily, he was quite shocked when he first heard about the offer. As such, he didn't accept the offer on the spot but discussed this with his family members including his wife Seto Asaka. They were supportive of this idea so he took on the offer within the same day.

* Inohara had also met Takizawa directly for the handover but did not ask the latter about the reason of his resignation. He expressed his admiration for what Takizawa had been doing all these years. Although it seemed like Takizawa had some unfinished business by leaving now despite declaring that he was continuing the late Johnny-san's legacy, he assured Takizawa that they will continue his good work which Takizawa said that he felt confident that they will be able to do well going forward. Inohara also said that there are many talented staff members and artistes in the agency so he will tap on their strengths to help him manage the company.

* Unlike Takizawa who was a full-time manager, Inohara will still be continuing his activities as an artiste together with his management duties. He said that he is aware of how tough this may be but he is prepared for the challenge and plans to learn everything from scratch. He joked that he might even go to visit ARASHI members with cookies as a gift to ask for their help.

* Coincidentally, the announcement date of his appointment i.e. 1 Nov is also the debut & disband date of V6 thus marking a fresh start for Inohara.

AMUSE releases a statement about the facts surrounding Miura Haruma's passing & announces plans for other related matters

AMUSE released a statement on 4 Sep 2020 which was also the 49th day since Miura Haruma's passing on 18 July. The statement contained an explanation of the circumstances on that day so as to counter the untrue reports and rumours that had surfaced subsequently. In addition, there was also mention of some other related matters including the farewell ceremony for Miura.

Here are the key points in the statement:

- AMUSE expressed the pain, shock and regret felt by everyone in the company as they felt confused over Miura's sudden happening and powerless about not being able to protect him who had been with them for the past 16 years. As such, they would like to apologise to fans for causing them grief over Miura's passing.

- As to why they released the statement, AMUSE said that groundless rumours and accusations after Miura's passing had been swirling around which in turn brought caused everyone to suffer even more. That was the reason why they decided to clarify what happened that day so as to set the record straight. And since it had been 49 days since he passed away, AMUSE decided that this was the right time since they had to get hold of the key facts first and make plans for some of the matters mentioned in this statement.

- Miura was supposed to be filming his drama in the afternoon of 18 July but he had not appeared at the carpark of his apartment block even though his manager-in-charge was already waiting for him there at the agreed time. The manager then sent messages and called Miura but did not get any response. The manager made his way to Miura's apartment and rang the intercom but to no avail. He then contacted the apartment's management company where they sent a representative to bring the keys to the apartment so that the manager could go in to look for Miura. However, when the manager finally found Miura, the latter was already unsconscious. They called for the police and emergency services and administered first aid in the meantime. Despite their best efforts, Miura was confirmed to have passed away in the hospital at 2.10pm.

- Subsequent investigations by the police confirmed that there was no foul play. The autopsy also concluded that the cause of death was suicide.

- Despite these facts, there were media reports alleging that the manager was waiting for Miura at the filming scene and had only gone to check on him when he didn't show up. In fact, all AMUSE artistes would be ferried to and from work by their managers so this allegation was totally untrue.

- During the police's investigations of the apartment, there was a notebook belonging to Miura which contained his thoughts about various things such as how he prepared for his roles. However, there was no suicide note as claimed in the media. Even in this notebook, there was nothing mentioned that could shed a light on why he decided to commit suicide. There was also nothing in writing that he left for his fans, staff members, fellow artiste friends etc.

- With regard to how his work was arranged, there were discussions between Miura and his manager whenever offers were received. They would discuss issues at length such as whether they could fit the offer into his schedule, what kind of significance it would have on his career as well as how he felt about it.
Some media reports alleged that he was forced to cancel his overseas studies at the order of his manager but this never happened.

- As for the projects which Miura had appeared but haven't been released, after discussing with various parties, the general consensus was that everything would be released as planned.

- Fans have been asking for the commercial release of Miura's past works especially the Broadway musical "Kinky Boots". Due to issues with the copyrights, they are unable to release the whole play on Blu-ray or DVD. However, the Broadway side has generously allowed a 15-min special edition to be uploaded online so they will announce the details in time to come.
As for the sold-out "Kinky Boots" original soundtrack, they will do a re-release so fans can buy it from online portals as of 4 Sep.

- As for his other works, they are still in discussions with the relevant parties regarding the commercial release.

- Going forward, all sales and earnings related to Miura Haruma will be channeled to The Miura Haruma Foundation (temporary name) which will be established within 2020. This foundation will continue to support "ACT AGAINST ANYTHING" (previously known as Act Against AIDS) and the Lao Friends Hospital for Children which Miura had supported all along.

- The commemoration site for Miura has received many messages from fans every day since it was set up. His farewell ceremony is expected to be held within 2020 but in view of the current COVID-19 situation, they will announce the details only after everything has been decided.

- AMUSE also called upon the media to refrain from publishing articles of a speculative or malicious nature about Miura's family and friends and excessive interviewing of those around him. These groundless rumours and speculations have caused further hurt to these people who are still in grief over his passing.

- AMUSE also pledged to create an even better environment for its artistes and staff so as to protect them physically and mentally. They expressed their hope that Miura and his works will continue to shine in the hearts of his fans going forward.

More details on TOKIO's new plans from April 2021 & Nagase Tomoya's departure from Johnny's

Further to the "surprise" announcement last night from TOKIO, more details have been reported today about the background of their decision and the band's plans from April 2021. Frankly speaking, Nagase's intention to leave and pursue other interests has been reported quite frequently for the past few years ever since Yamaguchi Tatsuya left due to his scandal so I'm not so surprised by his move. Just like how the members feel, it struck me as "so he finally made up his mind". On the other hand, I'm quite happy to see that the remaining members will set up their own company while maintaining their band name (albeit still an affiliate of Johnny's) and get more freedom to do what they want. Perhaps the only sad thing out of this is that without their vocalist, TOKIO will never resume their music activities but if the five of them ever get back together one day in the future, we might get to hear their music ahead. So, never say never.

For now, I'll just rewatch and re-listen to their CDs and DVDs and think about the good old days.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Josei Seven interviewed Joshima Shigeru, Kokubun Taichi and Matsuoka Masahiro after the news was announced. Although Kokubun and Matsuoka were dressed casually, Joshima was wearing a suit during the interview. They explained that they completed the company registration for TOKIO Co., Ltd. on 22 July 2020 and the company seal was also created. Matsuoka revealed that this was why Joshima was dressed formally since he was the company president and had to complete the incorporation process.

- Joshima will be the president while Kokubun and Matsuoka will be vice-presidents. Kokubun will be in charge of planning while Matsuoka will be in charge of public relations. Matsuoka joked that the realization that he has become a company's president hasn't quite sunk in for Joshima but they will support him and work together without running away with the company's funds. Joshima said that TOKIO has made many things to date on an island and village which had nothing to begin with but creating a company is really new to them.

- Nagase will not belong to any agency after he leaves Johnny's Jimusho next year and is planning to work behind-the-scenes as a creator. However, this does not mean that he will be leaving showbiz for good since he never said so thus there is a likelihood that he may return as an artiste again.

- The band discussed at regular intervals about their future plans so the members were all aware that Nagase had the intention to pursue other interests since several years ago. As such, this was not something which arose from what happened to Yamaguchi back in 2018. When asked if the inability to resume music activities was what made Nagase decide to leave, they said that it wasn't the trigger for his decision but rather, his intention to try other things was something which had been discussed from time to time. It just so happened that the move is going to take place after Yamaguchi's departure.

- In January 2020, Nagase announced his intention to leave the agency. Rather than being surprised, the members had the feeling that this day had finally come. Since then, the four of them had engaged in numerous discussions and concluded in the end that they would send Nagase off happily.

- From then on, Joshima, Kokubun and Matsuoka started to discuss what they would want to do after Nagase leaves. It would have been easy for them to simply quit from the agency as well but they wanted to keep the name "TOKIO" which was given to them by the late Johnny Kitagawa. That was when they toyed with the idea of setting up a company with the name TOKIO. However, as this was an unprecedented move in the history of Johnny's, Kokubun brought up the idea to the current president Julie Fujishima who was full of praise for the idea. They were very surprised by how she reacted to their proposal. Nagase was also very happy that their name will be retained.

- Although the members had hardly mentioned Yamaguchi in a public setting ever since what happened in 2018, they revealed that they just didn't have the opportunity to talk about him openly. The relationship and bond between the five of them had never changed despite what happened even though their band had undergone changes. In fact, Yamaguchi was told of their decision by Matsuoka during a 30-min call before the announcement came out yesterday. Yamaguchi was very supportive of their decisions and had shared with them that he was trying his best to lead a decent life now.

- In a separate interview with Sports Hochi, it was revealed that Nagase had never said that he wanted to quit but rather, the other members could see that the things he wanted to do were slowly deviating from what they had been doing. As such, they are eagerly anticipating to see what he could come up with after he leaves.

- Preparations before the announcement began about a year ago and they had planned to announce it with some leeway since Nagase wouldn't be quitting with immediate effect. However, due to what happened to former NEWS member Tegoshi Yuuya, they had to make some adjustments to the schedule.

- When asked if the three members had accepted Nagase's proposal readily, Kokubun said that they are already adults and have been together for so long thus there wasn't any argument at all. In fact, he wished that they could have done some arguing during the process.

- As to whether Nagase was frustrated for not being able to do a concert tour for the band's 25th anniversary, the members denied this and said that it wasn't an issue of whether they wanted to do it or not. The issue for them was, with Yamaguchi out of the picture, they didn't feel that they could resume their music activities without deciding on what to do about the absence of their bassist.

- As the members said that it was an "amicable divorce" between them and Nagase, they were also asked about how they felt about Tegoshi's claim that his departure was also amicable. Matsuoka commented that Tegoshi's situation wasn't the same and that he had rattled off too much during his press conference which should have been better if he set aside at least 5 minutes for Q & A.

- Kokubun elaborated that to date, their image was created by their agency and the programmes they appeared in. Going forward, they will be the ones who set their own directions and try various things as they make the transition from being a band to a company. And they do not have any plans for anyone else to join their company as of now since they don't want to have competition and quarrels from office politics among the artistes.

- Although there had been a series of artiste departures from Johnny's in recent years, the three of them are bucking the trend by staying on but under a different structure. They also went to inform Johnny Kitagawa about their plans on his death anniversary on 9th July. They admitted that this move would have been unexpected by him but believed that he would support them since he always told them not to copy what others did.

- When asked if Matsuoka would stop the media from reporting bad news or scandals about them since he is in charge of PR, he joked that they could write for all they want but most likely, they would only be able to snap photos of Joshima though.

- As for the company's ownership structure, Matsuoka revealed that Johnny's Jimusho will hold a certain percentage while the rest will be owned by the three of them. When asked if they expect Joshima to issue bonuses to them, Matsuoka poked fun at the president for being one who never gives New Year's gifts to their juniors all along so they will not expect too much from him. In response, Joshima said that bonuses will have to depend on the economic conditions.

- As for what they wish to do come April 2021, Matsuoka said that they will continue with what they are doing and also try other new things. Kokubun said that it would be good to get Joshima to hold presentations or seminars talking about being a modern leader since this hasn't been done before by anyone in Johnny's. Considering that Joshima had been their leader for 26 years even though he isn't the aggressive nor forceful type, they believed that he would have lots of insights to share about leadership since they might have gone their separate ways earlier if he was a control freak who ruled with an iron fist.

- When asked if they would participate in Johnny's events in future, Matsuoka said that they would if they are asked to but Kokubun stressed that they won't be singing though.

- TOKIO's fanclub will continue to exist from April 2021.

- In his comments to fanclub members, Nagase called upon them not to feel sad about the impending changes but rather, be happy about how far the band has come after all these years. He also thanked everyone for their love and support for the past 30 years which had made him very happy.
