Quick Review #72: Modern Love Tokyo - Autumn 2022

Title: Modern Love Tokyo / モダンラブ・東京

Rating: 6 / 10

Recommended for
Those who are interested in modern love stories in various forms and are fans of the cast

Liked:
- This anthology of various love stories set in Tokyo offers a variety of themes including parental love, LGBT, sexless marriages, long-distance international relationships, seniors having a second chance at love, teenage first-love rekindled in adulthood etc. so this should satisfy viewers with the variety. While this may not be an all-rounder pleaser, some episodes would have resonated more with viewers than the others. Personally, I liked Ep 6 featuring Emma Scott and Ikematsu Sousuke the most while Episode 1 (Mizukawa Asami & Maeda Atsuko) and Episode 7 (Kuroki Haru & Kubota Masataka as voice actors) came a close second for the heartwarming and fuzzy vibes at the end.

- The drama had a star-studded cast with some unexpected cameos as well e.g. Miura Touko, Koura Kengo and Matsumoto Wakana but I would have to say that Ikematsu Sousuke and Naomi Scott stood out for their natural acting and great chemistry. It was actually the first time I saw Ikematsu in a romantic role so it was a pretty refreshing change and I have to say, his English was really good. The matchings also had a fair bit of novelty e.g. Mizukawa and Maeda who played a married couple which was somewhat never seen before in other works. Seeing Emoto Tasuku and Eikura Nana together somehow made me keep thinking of their respective spouses though for some strange reason.

Disliked:
- As the anthology was written and directed by different people, the storytelling styles and directing naturally varied so I can't say that I liked every single episode. In particular, I found Episode 5 starring Nagasaku Hiromi and Yusuke Santa Maria a tad bewildering as I failed to understand what the story was driving at. The way the story was told also seemed to have a tinge of a horror love story. Looking at online reviews, it seems that sentiments about this episode are quite divided too. As I mentioned above, while some episodes may touch and resonate with you a bit more, there might be some which will not impress.
Another thing which made me quite unconvinced or uncomfortable were some story settings which seemed far-fetched or unlikely to happen in real life. For example, in Ep 3 when the revelation about why the lead couple's date was supposedly "the worst" came out, it made me wonder how that could have happened unless the male lead's change had undergone a massive transformation over the years as he aged. Another thing which got me thinking was in Ep 1 when Mizukawa Asami played a nursing mother who was expressing her breast milk in the airplane's toilet. Those scenes seemed to project her in a slightly negative light because she seemed to be hogging the restroom without a care for other passengers and even looked delighted that she won't be disturbed by the long queue during a turbulence since the passengers had to go back to their seats. I do think that might have given rise to misunderstandings and misconceptions about nursing mothers and further perpetuate prejudice against them even though that may not have been the initial intention.

- While the drama was supposedly set in Tokyo, some of the stories didn't really have a Tokyo angle or touch so the link between the location and the story wasn't as strong as it should have been. As such, the Tokyo-ness of the stories could have been reinforced or else they could have jolly well fit in to other major metropolitan cities elsewhere in Japan.

Quick Review #62: Shylock no kodomotachi - Autumn 2022

Title:
Shylock no kodomotachi /  シャイロックの子供たち

Rating: 8 / 10

Recommended for
Those who want to see a quick-paced suspense story and/or are fans of Inohara Yoshihiko

Liked:
- Given that this drama only has 4.5 episodes (Episode 0 ran for half an episode's airtime), the story moved along speedily as it shuttled between the past and present timelines. Despite the amount of information to take in and the number of characters to keep track of, everything was presented very logically so it would be easy to keep track of what's going on. The build-up to the climax was evenly spaced out so you won't feel bored along the way even in Episode 0 which was just an introduction to what was to come.

- Inohara Yoshihiko is probably more remembered and well-known for his "Tokusou 9" series in recent years which has been running since 2006 (predecessor was "Keishichou sousa ikka kyugakari") and has a new installment every year except 2018. As such, for his longtime fans or even those new to his acting, you would probably discover a new side to him beyond what you see in variety shows and the "Tokusou 9" series. He was a perfect fit for the lead character Nishiki who was endearing and well-liked by his colleagues and juniors (not so much by his seniors and superiors) while juggling his own struggles such as family issues and career setbacks due to him trying to do the right thing. I don't know if he fitted the Nishiki in the original novel because I didn't read it. Just based on this drama alone, I think he did really well and fully immersed himself into this character.

Disliked:
- The drama's short length could also be seen as a factor leading to the somewhat anti-climatic ending which seemed a bit sloppy and hurried in comparison. Given that there was so much effort and time spent to build up to the concluding episode, the "showdown" with the culprit was over in no time and it also felt as if Nishiki didn't get "rewarded" for his efforts in doing the right thing. As such, this is probably an unconventional ending which may not go down well with all viewers although I can understand that this outcome was probably what Nishiki wanted more than to continue being caught in a toxic work environment that was in conflict with his beliefs.

Quick Review #56: Ryoujin no ono - Autumn 2022

Title: Ryoujin no ono / 両刃の斧

Rating: 7 / 10

Recommended for
Those who like thought-provoking but slow-paced suspense stories with twists

Liked:
- While this was largely a suspense story trying to get to the bottom of a 15-year-old murder case, it turned out that the truth was not as it seemed. To be frank, rather than feeling gratified that the truth was out in the open, the feeling of "munashii" (in vain or emptiness) came across more strongly. Was it everyone's best interests that the truth was known? Just like what the title meant i.e. a double-edged axe, there was a likelihood of hurting someone behind you when you did something seemingly for the best. As such, it was worth considering that if the entire journey in search for closure and the truth was worth it after all because this felt like a tragedy after all with a bittersweet ending.

- The acting of Shibata Kyouhei and Iura Arata was a good contrast between calmness and passion and their chemistry on screen was a joy to watch. Even the supporting cast members had their moments to shine especially Nao. I would have wanted to see more of Mikami Ai and Nagasawa Itsuki though - just too bad.

Disliked:
- The slow pacing of the story (despite this being just 6 episodes) can be a test of your patience if you are the type who craves for faster developments. Although there were many twists in the story which provided some "excitement" and unpredictability, I really had the temptation to turn up the playback speed whenever it took ages for things to move along.

Quick Review #22: Reibai tantei Jouzuka Hisui / Invert Jouzuka Hisui Toujoshu

Title
: Reibai tantei Jouzuka Hisui / Invert Jouzuka Hisui Toujoshu 霊媒探偵・城塚翡翠 / invert ・城塚翡翠 倒叙集

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: NTV

Rating: 6 / 10

Recommended for: those who don't mind a slow buildup in a suspense story where the detective outwits the criminal in one move

Liked:
- Ep 5. This has got to be the best episode in the entire series made up of 2 dramas in the same season with the same characters. The way how the truth was revealed and how Hisui outsmarted the Transparent Devil was very engaging even though it was largely Hisui talking for most of the episode.

- Kiyohara Kaya & Seto Koji having great chemistry as "partners" at work and in love

- The chemistry between Kiyohara and Koshiba Fuuka in the "invert" arc where they had more playful and spontaneous interactions.

Disliked:
- The buildup in the first 4 episodes was just too slow and painful to sit through.

- The "invert" arc seemed quite refreshing in the first episode with its reverse reasoning but the concept got stale really quickly with subsequent cases. It also didn't help that the finale in the "invert" arc was way too simple to deduce and see through.

- I was hoping to see some revelations about Hisui in the "invert" arc but it was very disappointing to note that there was nothing substantial. Which means that the likelihood of a sequel is pretty high but I'm not sure if I can sit through more boring episodes to get to those revelations.

Review of "silent" (Autumn 2022)

And so this is the end of the "#silent" journey after 12 weeks (there was a week's break in between because of the World Cup broadcast).

Instead of discussing in great detail about the finale, I have chosen to summarise my thoughts about the entire drama in this post. For those who may be interested, you can check out my "long and detailed thoughts" about the previous 10 episodes through the following links:

Ep 1: TwitterFacebook
Ep 10: Twitter / Facebook

Personally, my top 3 favourite episodes were no.5 (Tsumugi & Minato's break-up), no.6 (the story of Nana and Sou) and no.8 (the story of Nana and Haruo). They were simply so engaging, emotional and heart-wrenching and left a strong impression on me. That's not to say that I didn't care about the main couple's story...it's just that comparatively, these 3 episodes resonated with me a lot. And as I mentioned before, I found myself caring more for what happened to Nana and Haruo rather than Tsumugi and Sou because of Ep 8.

To begin with, I must admit that I had no expectations of this drama at first and adopted a wait-and-see attitude - meaning I was prepared to drop this anytime if it wasn't to my liking. Part of the reason was that stories like this about someone who is considered "normal" and part of the majority being in a relationship with someone who is faced with a considerable physical, financial, circumstantial challenge or disadvantage in life aren't that new. As such, there was no doubt that this would be compared to some of the more well-known same genre predecessors like 1995's "Aishiteru to itte kure" starring Tokiwa Takako and Toyokawa Etsushi or "Hoshi no kinka" in the same year starring Sakai Noriko, Oosawa Takao & Takenouchi Yutaka.

Of course, to be fair to "silent", the setting was somewhat different because the lead characters actually fell in love back in high school when they did not face this challenge of hearing loss and reunited years later to have a second go at being together whereas the titles I mentioned featured the main couples starting off with a romantic relationship while already coping with their challenges/differences.

Secondly, much as I think Kawaguchi Haruna is a decent actress, I can't really say that I am impressed or like her acting based on what I've seen from her so far. As for Meguro Ren, I had heard of Snow Man before but I didn't even know that he was part of the group. In addition, I hadn't seen any of Meguro's acting projects in the past so he was literally an unknown to me. Since then, I am much more familiar with him now, have watched "Kieta Hatsukoi" and even know the names of all the Snow Man members by now. It also helped to see that Kaho and Kazama Shunsuke were in the line-up as well so this gave me a little more faith in this drama.

Unexpectedly, this drama literally started with a bang and was such an overnight sensation right from the first episode. I was pleasantly surprised to see the level of detail, attention and effort put in and the script definitely played a big part in the drama's success. Considering that this was the debut work of a newbie scriptwriter, it was even more impressive because honestly speaking, brand name power is still a factor in this industry which determines how much faith people have in your works. Then again, even big name scriptwriters sometimes struggle to churn out hit after hit so being well-known sometimes doesn't guarantee success. As such, I thought that the producer and director really took a huge leap of faith with the scriptwriter in this case which thankfully worked out really well. Nonetheless, I think that even with a good script, there still needs to be good directing, cinematography, visuals, music, sound and acting as well so whatever the drama had achieved to date is definitely a team effort based on the synergies of its cast and crew.

I was still a bit apprehensive about this drama would go after Ep 1 because there have been many dramas which started off with a bang and simply fizzled out in no time. Last season's "Junai Dissonance" was just like this - I was so impressed with the first episode but everything just went haywire after that. Fortunately, "silent" had been very consistent with its quality and provided so much food for thought that it helped to keep viewers engaged and tuning in week after week. Seeing how my weekly reflections get longer and longer would be a tell-tale sign of how involved I was while watching this drama.

The characters were also very endearing - as in there wasn't any baddie that could turn viewers off - and everyone got a chance to shine and show the different sides of themselves. I believe that if the characters were not so lovable or the viewers couldn't care less about what happened to them, that would have reduced the level of engagement felt while watching this drama.

With regard to the finale, I think opinions may differ depending on your expectations. If you hope to see an happily-ever-after ending, it may not be entirely satisfactory though. Yet, it is not a bleak and hopeless situation.

I may be a bit pessimistic or too practical but I sort of expected that it won't be a 100% happy ending before I watched the finale. The issues that Sou and Tsumugi face are not things that can be solved in one episode and there is the gap of 8 years they need to bridge as well. It's true that they still love each other but it takes time to get used to being in a relationship as adults and trying to find a mutually acceptable way of being with each other that doesn't place undue stress or burden on one party. As such, the ending was kind of open-ended in the sense that we can see that they are still a work-in-progress i.e. they have made the commitment to try and find a way out but they are still far from the happy-ever-after stage. I thought that this was a logical and realistic way of portraying their relationship rather than being told that every issue is no issue just as long as they love each other. Likewise, much as I would like to see Nana and Haruo being together again, they too need time to bridge the distance between them. Of course, I am hopeful that there will come a day when they can be a couple but their open-ended status allows the viewers to imagine what may come so that's still not bad after all.

However, for those who come into the finale with the expectation of a happy ending, you may feel that the finale hasn't achieved much especially since the pace can be a tad draggy at times. I also feel that the earlier 10 episodes had raised the bar so high that the finale may seem a bit anti-climatic to some and may not come across as satisfying.

As for the cast, I think that everyone did a good job but my personal favourites are Kaho and Kazama. Even though there was only one episode which focused on Nana and Haruo, the two of them made the best of their airtime to produce some really memorable fine acting. E.g. when Haruo called out Nana's name even though her back was facing him and she couldn't have heard him, the amount of emotion in that moment was mind-blowing. Or the fallout they had when they just couldn't understand or chose not to understand each other's feelings and intentions.

As for Kawaguchi and Meguro, I thought that their best moment was in the first episode when Sou and Tsumugi finally met again outside the train station and they just couldn't communicate with each other because one was speaking and the other was using sign language. That frustration, sadness and helplessness which they displayed were very much unforgettable. In the finale, there were some cute moments then and now which I thought would be quite satisfying for fans of the main couple.

To sum things up, I would recommend this drama to those who are prepared to spend time savouring each moment and emotion in this story. This is definitely not the type of drama that you can just play in the background without looking at the screen because there were so many scenes where there was no dialogue and you have to rely on the subtitles to know what the sign language meant. As such, you really need to slow down and take in the story bit by bit. And because the drama is more than just about romance, it should also satisfy those who want to see more than just a love story since there are side plots about friendships and family as well.

Quick Review #21: PICU Shouni shuuchuu chiryoushitsu (Autumn 2022)

Title
: PICU Shouni shuuchuu chiryoushitsu PICU 小児集中治療室

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: FujiTV

Rating: 7 / 10

Recommended for: those who like medical dramas and are fine with them being slower-paced and focus more on the people i.e. the medical staff and patients rather than the illnesses

Liked:
- The first 30 minutes of Ep 9 where Takeshiro and Minami spent time in Tokyo to seek a second opinion about her illness and reveal their thoughts and love for each other. Those scenes were so heart-wrenching because the love and bond between mother and son were so strong and touching yet it wasn't over-the-board in going really dramatic about Minami's last days.

- This is the first time that I've watched Yoshizawa Ryo in a leading role and I was really impressed with the natural and progressive development of his character Takeshiro over the course of these three months. His acting was right on spot in showing the various emotional states of Takeshiro without it ever feeling like it was faked or forced.

- The scenery of Hokkaido which honestly felt like a visually-pleasing travelogue at times.

Disliked:
- The pacing of this drama can be a bit uneven at times - some episodes had more developments or were more engaging to watch while some felt pretty draggy. If you are used to the medical dramas which show the doctors and nurses racing against time to save patients e.g. in an ER setting, this might not be your cup of tea.

- The part about how Takeshiro going around to request for more resources from other departments in the hospital for PICU - I thought that was kind of idealistic and too cliché. Considering that other departments were also shorthanded, it doesn't seem realistic for them to give in to Takeshiro's pleading as easily as how it was depicted.

- I felt that the discussion on the challenges posed by Hokkaido's vast land area on the medical resources for relatively remote or far-flung places were pretty superficial. It was as if there was much attention devoted to this theme in the first few episodes but it sort of slipped into the background and became forgotten as the focus shifted to the main characters. And it looks likely that this might become a long-running series since the topic is not something that can be resolved simply by having a designated medical plane stationed near the PICU or having more PICUs. As such, the "unfinished business" ending did result in a lower level of satisfaction felt by the time the drama ended.

Quick Review #20: Atomu no ko (Autumn 2022)

Title
: Atomu no ko アトムの童

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: TBS

Rating: 7.5 / 10

Recommended for: those who are interested in the gaming industry, fans of the cast and/or like David and Goliath stories.

Liked:
- Odagiri Jo. I admit that I am personally biased here because I am a fan of Odagiri and would be happy with whatever he appears in (well, most of the time). However, I cannot ignore the fact that him standing in for Kagawa Teruyuki just before the season started turned out to be the icing on the cake for this drama and a blessing in disguise in a rather unpleasant situation. In fact, I think that the role fits Odagiri way better in terms of appearance and character setting. I wouldn't have liked this drama as much if it had been Kagawa who played Okitsu and the subsequent bromance subplot with Yamazaki Kento wouldn't have worked at all if not for Odagiri.

- The lead trio played by Yamazaki Kento, Matsushita Kouhei and Kishii Yukino showed great teamwork and chemistry which was reflective of their respective characters' friendship and elevated the comrade aspect in this drama with each challenge cleared together.  And I was relieved that the scriptwriter didn't try to create a love line or love triangle between them or it would have been really awkward and soured the friendship aspect of this story. Friendship between men and women being great partners at work does work well so not everything has to end up in romance.

- The insights into the gaming industry were quite interesting as I highlighted in my episodic reflections posted throughout this season. For someone new to this industry or those who have some basic knowledge, it will still be quite insightful to know about the process of creating a game before it finally meets the world. To be honest, I was quite skeptical about how this story of a struggling toy manufacturer becoming a game producer would turn out but the gradual progress of this transition turned out to be quite believable and engaging most of the time.

Disliked:
- The finale was pretty underwhelming. After being fed with lots of dramatic twists and turns so far to get to this point, the resolution turned out to be so predictable and somewhat too straightforward. The usual style of using just words/arguments to convince a key person to change his/her mind has been used so many times in Japanese dramas but the argument has to be moving/convincing enough to make the viewers agree with how the story ends. Unfortunately, I personally didn't buy into Nayuta's reasoning so if I was the major shareholder, I wouldn't have been convinced to vote for SAGAS. And to think that Okitsu didn't get a chance to save his company himself, I thought that was very disappointing to see.

- The flashback scene sequence was way too long. I get that it was meant to show how the characters concerned had come a long way to resolving their differences, achieving success in different ways and moving on to what they want to do but it was getting too draggy by the time it went past the 1-min mark. Flashbacks don't need to be that detailed and I certainly don't need a recap of the entire drama with another 10+ minutes to go before the episode ended.

- Throughout the course of the drama, I did mention that there were quite a number of illogical points which I could appreciate that was for dramatic effect or for the drama to move forward. Seriously speaking, given the gullible, somewhat naïve and overly kind nature of those in "Atomu Gangu" and "Atomu no ko", it was a surprise to see them survive till the end.
The issue is, if a drama is meant to showcase a real-life business world or industry, the balance between reality and fiction ratio is very difficult to achieve. If you go overboard with the reality, the drama becomes very much like a boring documentary. However, if it becomes so detached from reality, it's difficult for the viewers to feel immersed or believe the story. The later situation was what prevented me from enjoying the story more because the logical/practical side of me would be very bothered by the discrepancies with reality. Then again, this issue might not be so applicable to all though especially those who don't mind the sometimes overly dramatic or smoother-than-expected developments to benefit the protagonists.

Quick Review #19: First Penguin! (Autumn 2022)

Title
: First Penguin! ファーストペンギン!

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: NTV

Rating: 6.5/10

Recommended for: those who are interested to know about the fishery industry, fans of Nao and like feel-good stories of how people rise above challenges to become successful

Liked:
- Nao. She definitely carried the series very well as the lead with her strong acting and very engaging portrayal of Nodoka who packed a lot of power and energy despite her petite frame. Despite the tough challenges Nodoka faced and a lack of trust in her from the people around, she always overcame these issues with a smile. However, Nodoka wasn't just one-dimension though because there were moments of weakness and self-doubt which I thought Nao managed to show the transition between these different sides of Nodoka very seamlessly. And even when surrounded by a group of men in the story, she could still stand out and hold her own without giving the feeling that Nodoka wasn't a competent leader.
Of course, kudos also go to the supporting cast including Tsutsumi Shinichi, Suzuki Nobuyuki, Matsumoto Wakana and Watanabe Daichi who did a good job in making their characters endearing enough to root for and giving Nao a much-needed boost as the heroine. It was also fun to watch the after-stories of these characters a few years down the road in the finale.

- There was a fair bit of interesting information about the fishery industry in Japan in particular which helped to show why Nodoka's presence as a disruptor and upsetting the status quo could elicit such a strong and violent reaction from the incumbents such as the fishing association. The last twist about national and security interests was not expected but I thought it was a timely addition and made the story end on a more serious note rather than keep harping on "local" competition issues.

Disliked:
- The biggest problem with the story was the bullying and having it on repeat and escalating mode. If it's a couple of times, I can understand that it was meant to show the set of challenges that Nodoka had to overcome in order to achieve success. However, there were times when the bullying tactics became so trivial and petty that it was getting dry, repetitive and boring. I had the lingering thought of wanting to drop this drama as early as in Ep 3/4.
The other extreme though was seeing bullying taken to such a level that it was so malicious, had hurt innocent folks and there was scant regard for the safety and lives of the fishermen. Although this drama is based on a true story, I can't help but wonder how many of these instances did actually happen. As such, if you want to watch this, you need to be prepared for the potential disgust, frustration and annoyance felt while seeing the bullying get worse with each episode.

- The somewhat stagnant timeline was also a bugbear for me because the entire story took place 10 years ago and the timeline never budged from then. I was still hoping to see some progression but up to the last episode, the only "movement in time" was to see Susumu return to the fishing port as a high school student to visit Hiroshi. If the events had been spread out for a longer period of time, how would it have changed the pacing and story development? I certainly don't think that the heroine in real life managed to achieve so much in a year or less so the drama's story might have felt a bit more believable and convincing if it was spread out more evenly.

Quick Review #18: Shinainaru boku e satsui wo komete (Autumn 2022)

Title
: Shinainaru boku e satsui wo komete 親愛なる僕へ殺意をこめて

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: FujiTV

Rating: 5/10

Recommended for: those who like suspense stories about split personalities and fans of Yamada Ryosuke and Kadowaki Mugi

Liked:
- Episodes 5 and 7. I was about to give up on this drama after 4 episodes but Ep 5 convinced me to stay on and I got lured again to continue because of Ep 7. On hindsight, I should have skipped straight through to the last 10 minutes of the finale from Ep 7 instead of sitting through a couple more episodes.

- The acting of the cast especially Yamada Ryosuke (after B-1 started appearing more regularly), Kadowaki Mugi (Ep 5) and Sakurai Yuki (Ep 7). In Yamada's case, his integration of Eiji and B-1 at the very end was quite impressive. Kadowaki was so overwhelmingly good in one single episode but it was a pity that her character kinda fizzled out in the end. Sakurai also had her moment of brilliance but alas, it wasn't meant to last. Due to the way this drama was designed, you would need to wait around for a while before you can see the better parts of the cast's performances. Last but not least, Endo Kenichi was pretty good as well at the end but since he was supposed to play someone who had no feelings and empathy, it may draw a reaction from the other extreme i.e. you will either love or hate his performance for the emotionless acting.

Disliked:
- As a suspense thriller, I must say that I wasn't excited nor was I intrigued by the so-called suspense in the story. To have only 2 episodes as the highlight of the entire story and the ending being quite anti-climatic (it wasn't too difficult to guess the identity of the killer nor the motive), you would need to have a great deal of patience to sit through the fluff before getting to the good parts. I must say though, I haven't read the original so I can't pinpoint where the problem was. At the very least, there were some loopholes in the logic of the story which I mentioned before in my episodic review posts.

- While some cast members still managed to get a moment to shine, some were not so lucky. For example, Kawaei Rina was supposed to be the heroine who was Eiji's partner in investigating the case but Nami felt more like B-1's runner to do things for him in the second half of the drama after B-1/Eiji went on the run. Even at the beginning stage, the relationship dynamic between them seemed a bit lopsided at times so they hardly met the definition of partners working towards a single goal. As such, Kawaei didn't look like she had much to offer in terms of acting even though I think she's capable of doing more.
Likewise, Sano Shiro's character didn't make a lot of sense at first although his actions were more or less explained and justified in Ep 5. However, it felt like too little, too late in a sense for him which I thought was a pity. And not to mention Onoe Matsuya or Saotome Taiichi - there should have been more to see from them but too bad that their characters this time were not that pivotal to the story so their performances felt a bit flat and forgettable.

Behind-the-scenes of FujiTV Autumn 2022 drama "silent" - Interview with its scriptwriter Ubukata Miku and producer Murase Ken

Mantan Web did an interview with the scriptwriter Ubukata Miku and producer Murase Ken of FujiTV Autumn 2022 drama "silent" where they shared behind-the-scenes information about the production process. Instead of translating the entire article word-for-word, I have chosen the key points for the purpose of this post:

* Murase who had produced dramas such as "14-sai no haha" and "Itsuka kono koi wo omoidashite kitto naiteshimau" in his career, explained why they decided to make this drama. In the current world where diversity is the new buzzword, they wondered if it is really true that people have indeed embraced this concept and thought that it would be a good idea to do something on this theme. From then, he approached the scriptwriter Ubukata about making a love story between the hearing-impaired and those who can hear.

* When Ubukata got the proposal, she didn't want to write a story where the couple meets and falls in love when one of them is already deaf. As such, the setting became that of two people who were already in love from the beginning, later came to face a situation of hearing loss and then reunited after some time.

* The story was written specifically with Kawaguchi Haruna and Meguro Ren in mind. Kawaguchi was chosen because Ubukata felt that she enjoys the support of female viewers and comes across as unpretentious so would be able to convey Tsumugi's thoughts as it is. As for Meguro, the fact that he is from the popular group Snow Man and has shown a lot of potential as an actor was why Ubukata wanted to choose him.

* As for Murase's impressions of the leads, Kawaguchi struck him as someone who stood out with grace and beauty even when she was surrounded by many stars during last year's NHK Kouhaku for which she was the host. Having made her debut in a FujiTV drama and coming full-circle to taking on the Kichou role in NHK's Taiga drama "Kirin ga kuru" and later becoming the Kouhaku host, he could see the progress she had made over the years and the aura that came with this built-up confidence in her achievements. As for Meguro, despite being from a popular group Snow Man, he found Meguro to have an unique charisma and is an actor who is not quite like the typical image of Johnny's artists especially after he saw Meguro in "Kyoujou II".

* When the announcement for the drama came out, it soon became much talked-about and the number of followers on its social media accounts passed the 200,000 mark even before the OA. Currently, the number of followers have exceeded 500,000. Murase commented that this amount of attention was rare for a drama which hadn't started its run and saw that as a reflection of the anticipation for the cast and the desire to see Kawaguchi and Meguro as the lead couple. This made the cast and staff members even more determined to make a drama that could meet these expectations.

* Ever since the first episode, the story has firmly captured the attention and interest of the viewers with its moving lines, the songs that appear in the drama and the relationships between the characters. Murase commented that the lines spoken in this drama are all very realistic and likely to be heard in real life so they don't come off as fake or staged. As such, he believed that this was why they resonated with the viewers. The cast had also praised the script for its excellent lines.

* One key theme that is depicted throughout the drama is how some things never change even when changes are taking place everywhere. As such, instead of focusing on the story developments, the script emphasizes the emotions and feelings of the characters and how they would react when things happen. This then makes the viewers interested and concerned about what would happen next which is very important to a drama series.

* Despite this drama being Ubukata's first work, Murase was full of praise for her and said that her script had both the quality of a veteran and the freshness of a newbie.

* Besides the amount of attention paid to the story, the beautiful visuals were also a key focus area for this drama. Instead of getting the drama's director Kazama Hiroki to take charge of the teasers, they got CM director Ota Ryo to handle these so as to get a fresh perspective on catching the viewers' attention in a very short time (CMs are usually less than a min long so you need to get the viewers' attention very quickly). The monologues spoken by the leads in these videos were written by Ubukata. In addition, many of the staff who work on this drama are those who typically work in the CM field rather than dramas. Fortunately, the end product turned out so well that everyone including the staff were full of praise for it.

The background story behind the birth of Kansai TV Autumn 2022 drama "Elpis - Kibou, arui wa sawai -"

This article from FRIDAY gives a pretty detailed account on the background story leading to the birth of Kansai TV Autumn 2022 drama "Elpis - Kibou, arui wa sawai -" which has been attracting attention because of its daring take on taboos in TV stations and the head-on battle against the dark side of power. Although the story is set in a fictitious TV station, the drama incorporated elements like obvious references to those in power, past political scandals and claims which were later found to be untrue which was considered very surprising for a primetime drama shown on a private terrestrial TV network.

* It took a long 6 years before the drama could see the light of day because its production process from the planning stage was fraught with difficulties and setbacks.

* Everything started from the spring of 2016 when TV producer Sano Ayumi went to visit scriptwriter Watanabe Aya for a discussion on an upcoming project about a love comedy. However, the conversation was getting stale and heading nowhere until they suddenly talked about people falsely accused of crimes that they did not commit. It turned out that Sano who graduated from the law faculty, had developed the habit of going to trials opened to the public after she read the diary of a convict on death role while she was still in university. As they talked about how easy it was for people to be punished on false charges in Japan and that there were many people who still hadn't been released despite their cases having clear loopholes or there were some which had some degree of suspicion as to whether these people were indeed guilty, Watanabe was convinced that if they were to do something about a false charge case which was still unresolved, it would definitely be good material for a drama.

* However, such a project would mean making an enemy out of the police and the judiciary so it was deemed to be impossible for TBS where Sano was working at then. Unable to give up on the idea, she requested Watanabe to go ahead to create the script with her so they managed to produce up to 3 episodes' worth of content and offered the lead role of Ena to Nagasawa Masami who agreed to it readily after reading the script.

* At that time, Sano had a illustrious career and was also involved in the production of hit drama "Quartet". Despite so, being caught up in the office politics then and going against the tide caused Sano to be transferred to the overseas business department. As a result, Sano who insisted that she didn't want to leave the drama production department and wanted to press on with the production of "Elpis", decided to leave TBS.

* After going around to pitch the drama to various TV stations, it was Kansai TV which came to the rescue in the end and prevented the project from going down the drain. Sano herself also joined Kansai TV and managed to mark her revival in the drama production industry with "Oomameda Towako to sannin no motto otto" last year.

* The Mondays 10pm timeslot was newly-created in autumn 2021 with the intention of taking on challenging and controversial productions. Ayano Go's "Avalanche" got the ball rolling with its story about people who took on the evil who were unable to be punished by the law through publishing their crimes for all to see on the Internet. As such, "Elpis" was arranged to be shown during this timeslot in line and even had its world premiere in Cannes.
