Key ratings highlights for NHK morning drama "Manpuku"

Although I have not been posting anything about drama ratings in recent years, I think that it's only right for me to share these key highlights in Manpuku's ratings for the past 6 months especially as it is the very first morning drama which I managed to complete in real time. Be prepared for more Manpuku-related posts in the days to come especially my review of this drama!

- Manpuku started airing from 1 October 2018 and ended its run on 30 March 2019 with 151 episodes.

- The average rating for the Kanto region was 21.4% while it was 19.5% in the Kansai region. Compared to the drama preceding it i.e. Hanbun Aoi which got an average of 21.1% in the Kanto region, Manpuku did better.

- The first episode registered a rating of 23.8% and 20.4% in the Kanto and Kansai regions respectively. This was the highest debut episode rating so far in the asadora history.

- The last episode got an average rating of 22.1% and 22.4% in the Kanto and Kansai regions respectively. Figures of the Kanto region for the last week were 22.7% -> 22.0% -> 21.8% -> 20.6% -> 21.3% -> 22.1%.

- The highest single episode rating for the Kanto region was the first episode while for the Kansai region, it was the last episode.

- Here are the average ratings for the five dramas preceding Manpuku (first figure is for Kanto while the second figure is for Kansai):
"Hanbun, Aoi" - 21.1% / 19.3%
"Warotenka" - 20.1% /  19.6%
"Hiyokko" - 20.4% / 20.3%
"Beppin-san" - 20.3% / 20.2%
"Toto Nee-chan" - 22.8% /  20.4%

- Ever since "Asa ga kita" in 2015, this is the 7th consecutive asadora which has registered an average rating of above 20%. Manpuku's average rating was higher than the 6 dramas preceding it, with the sole exceptions being "Toto Nee-chan" (22.8%) and "Asa ga kita" (23.5%).

- The ratings trend: Manpuku started off very well in its first episode and maintained an average rating of above 20% up till the 13th week before the New Year break. The only episodes when it went below 20% was on 4th and 5th January i.e. straight after the New Year break. It returned to the 20s region from the 15th week all the way to the end of its run.

The handover ceremony of NHK morning dramas "Beppin-san" and "Hiyokko" was held at NHK's HQ in Shibuya, Tokyo on 23 March which was attended by the leads Yoshine Kyoko and Arimura Kasumi. During the ceremony, the leads engaged in a customary exchange of gifts where Arimura presented tomatoes, natto, monkfish which are signature produce from Ibaraki Prefecture as well as rice which she harvested personally. In return, Yoshine gave 2kg of Kobe beef to Arimura. With regard to the gifts, Arimura said that she never expected to receive beef but it will come in useful to build stamina for the filming ahead. On the other hand, Yoshine revealed that she was very happy to get her favourite tomatoes so she will support "Hiyokko" while she is having breakfast with the rice and tomatoes. When asked if she had any advice for Arimura, Yoshine said that she hopes that Arimura can finish the filming safely without any injuries and illness and suggested that she should sleep as much as she could.

"Beppin-san" will end its run on 1 April while "Hiyokko" begins its run from 3 April.

During the wrap-up ceremony, Kanno Miho who played the lead character's mother and was the narrator of the drama, made a surprise appearance which made Yoshine burst into tears. Yoshine commented that she was very happy to spend the last day of her teens and the first day of her 20s acting in "Beppin-san" as a huge amount of confetti was scattered in the studio for the celebration. Besides Kanno, co-stars including Nagayama Kento, Renbutsu Misako, Tanimura Mitsuki, Tsuchimura Kaho, Momota Kanako and Koura Kengo also attended the celebration.

Handover ceremony for NHK morning dramas "Toto Nee-chan" & "Beppin-san"

The handover ceremony for NHK morning dramas "Toto Nee-chan" and "Beppin-san" was held on 20 September at NHK Osaka where the lead of the current drama i.e. Takahata Mitsuki passed over a silver baton to Yoshine Kyoko who stars in the latter that will begin its run from 3 October. Since Japan won a silver medal in the 4x100m relay in this year's Olympics, it was then decided that the ceremony would feature a passing-of-baton segment between the two female leads for the first time.

During the exchange of presents segment, Takahata gave Yoshine a fountain pen while the latter gave her a book cover which bears an embroidery design since her character in the morning drama is good at sewing. Yoshine expressed her happiness in receiving the pen which she can use to write on her script and letters for the important people in her life. As for Takahata, she was pleased to be given such a practical gift which bears her name and said that she will be able to use it immediately when she receives her next script. As Takahata had experience working with NHK Osaka when she appeared in the 2013 morning drama "Gochisousan", she advised Yoshine to be prepared for difficulties during the filming period and rely on the Osaka staff if need be so that she can perform to her fullest potential. Since Takahata has experience working with the Tokyo and Osaka staff, she also advised Yoshine to go around with her fellow co-stars to have fun since the actors will have to stay in Osaka together for the filming as compared to in Tokyo when everyone goes home after work.

The last episode of "Toto Nee-chan" will be shown on 1 October.

Mr.Children to sing the theme song for NHK morning drama "Beppin-san"

Mr.Children will be singing the theme song for NHK's new morning drama "Beppin-san" which will begin its run from 3 October. The song titled "Hikari no Atorie" is written by Sakurai Kazutoshi who hoped that the song of hope will be one which fits closely with the drama.

"Beppin-san" which is the 95th morning drama to date, features Yoshine Kyoko in the role of the heroine Bandou Sumire who was born into a rich family and loves embroidery and sewing. During the war, she gets married and pregnant but has to give birth to her daughter while her husband is in the military. Due to the air raids, she loses her home and assets. While waiting for her husband whose fate is unknown, Sumire meets various people which eventually leads her to use her sewing skills to set up a business of making clothes for children.

The producer Horinouchi Reijiro revealed that they had approached Mr.Children to sing the theme song for this drama and that they had agreed to it quickly. It took a few months before the song was written. Horinouchi praised the song for being one which will be able to bring sunshine to everyone and looks forward to the chemistry arising from the collaboration of the theme song and the drama.

Cast announcement press conference for NHK morning drama "Beppin-san"

The cast announcement press conference for NHK morning drama "Beppin-san" starring Yoshine Kyoko due to start its run from October was held on 16 May at NHK Osaka. It was revealed then that Kanno Miho will be playing the heroine's mother while Namase Katsuhisa will be the father. This is Kanno's first appearance in a drama series as a regular cast member since she gave birth to her first son with Sakai Masato last August.

During the press conference, a reporter wanted to ask about how Kanno felt about appearing in a NHK drama like her husband who is starring in the current Taiga "Sanadamaru". However, as there was already a ban on questions about private life matters, the host tried to block the question but Kanno responded smilingly with a witty reply by quoting a signature line from the Taiga drama i.e. "Damare, Kowappa!" (Shut up, kid!).

When asked about her role as the heroine's mother, Kanno revealed that her character will pass away quite early in the drama i.e. when the heroine is 9 years old. However, as she will also be the narrator for the morning drama, she will still be able to stay with the viewers throughout the entire duration of the drama. Kanno is not new to NHK morning dramas as she was one of the leads in the 1995 drama "Hashiranka!". She had also appeared in the 2001 drama "Chura-san". As such, she feels that time has passed by so quickly since "Hashiranka!" was already from 20 years ago.

Nakamura Tamao will be playing the heroine Bando Sumire's grandmother while Renbutsu Misako plays her elder sister. Koura Kengo will play Sumire's childhood friend, Nakura Jun will be the head clerk of Sumire's father's company. Her buddy will be played by Momota Kanako from Momoiro Clover Z.

However, the actor playing Sumire's husband will only be announced at the end of the month before filming commences.

Yoshine Kyoko to be the heroine for new NHK morning drama "Beppin-san"

Yoshine Kyoko was announced to be the next heroine for the upcoming NHK morning drama "Beppin-san" (Beauty) which will begin its run from 3 October in the Mondays to Fridays 8am timeslot. She was picked out of 2,261 candidates through an audition to play the lead character Bandou Sumire who set up the first shop in Japan specialising in the sale of children's clothing. Bandou's character is modeled on the late Banno Atsuko who set up the children's clothing brand familiar.

Yoshine had prior experience acting in a NHK morning drama when she played the daughter of the heroine's best friend in 2014's "Hanako to Anne". However, despite having gone for auditions for the heroine role for three other morning dramas to date i.e. "Mare", "Asa ga kita" and "Toto Nee-chan", she failed to get past the first round twice. This time, she was told on 5 April that she had to go to Osaka for the final audition but was pleasantly surprised when it was announced that she had been selected to play the heroine and was to attend the announcement press conference the following day. Yoshine admitted that she didn't think that she could get the role especially since she only made her debut three years ago and that she might have needed more experience under her belt. As part of the audition, she had to undergo a sewing test. Since her late grandmother was a dressmaking teacher, Yoshine had confidence in her skills but was so nervous that she could not put the thread through the needle for about 3 minutes initially.

During the announcement press conference held at NHK Osaka on 6 April, Yoshine revealed that she was diagnosed with the Guillain-Barre syndrome when she was 14 which affected her mobility and caused her to take a year off school for the treatment. Since then, she has developed a new perspective towards life and thinks that it is important for her to convey her feelings especially of gratitude and being apologetic to others. She also recounted that after she recovered, she has become so good at running that she got No.1 during a long-distance race in school.

Filming will begin from May in places such as Osaka and Kobe.
