Nishida Toshiyuki will be taking over from Ichihara Etsuko as the narrator for 2018 NHK Taiga drama "Segodon" as announced via the TV station's official website on 22 November. In the announcement, Ichihara apologised for the decision for causing inconveniences to all related parties and expressed her thanks to everyone who sent her encouragement and congratulatory messages when she accepted the offer to be the narrator. However, due to health reasons, it was decided that she would not be in the right condition to visit NHK regularly to do the narration as she needed to make more progress in her rehabilitation.
On the other hand, Nishida who had played Saigo Takamori before in the NHK Taiga "Tobu ga gotoku", will be in the position of observing how Saigo's life pans out in the drama this time. He also revealed that during an appearance in a recent NHK programme "Family History", he found out that his ancestors were samurais from the Satsuma Domain as well which Saigo belonged to so he felt that he has a fascinating affinity with Kagoshima where the domain was based. He also wished the best of health to Ichihara and hoped that she would be well very soon.
