Sometani Shota will be starring in the Japanese-Chinese joint production film "KU-KAI" which is directed by Chen Kaige and play the younger version of monk Kukai who was sent from Japan to the Tang Dynasty as an envoy. The movie took 5 years of planning and has a production budget of 15 billion yen. Filming is done entirely in Xiangyang City of Hubei Province in China from 31 July and expected to last for 5 months. The movie will be jointly released in Japan by Toho and KADOKAWA in 2018.
The movie is based on the novel Shamon Kukai Tou no Kuni nite Oni to udagesu" by Yumemakura Baku and talks about how the young Kukai and poet Bai Letian try to solve a huge mystery affecting the Tang Dynasty's capital at Chang-an. Sometani who is starring in his first overseas movie, will be speaking Chinese entirely in the movie. The role of Bai Letian will be played by Chinese actor Huang Xuan.
