Eita will be appearing in the 2018 NHK Taiga drama "Segodon" starring Suzuki Ryohei which will begin its run from January next year in the Sundays 8pm timeslot. This will be Eita's first appearance in a Taiga drama in 10 years since 2008's "Atsuhime" and his first collaboration with Suzuki. Filming will begin in summer this year.
The drama is based on the same-titled novel by Hayashi Mariko which is currently being serialised in the literature magazine "Hon no Tabibito" and describes the life of Saigo Takamori who was regarded as a hero during the Meiji Restoration. He had also gone through 2 island exiles and 3 marriages and fought the new Meiji government even though he was one of those responsible for establishing it. Eita will be playing the role of Okubo Toshimichi who was one of the three heroes along with Saigo and Kido Takayoshi credited for establishing the Meiji government. Seigo and Okubo both came from the Satsuma Domain and were childhood friends. However, with Okubo's appointment as a high-ranking official in the new government and taking the reins of the Seinan Sensou, he had to lead the military to suppress the people led by Saigo thus leading the two of them to fall out. According to historical records, Okubo was a determined man who would follow through with what he said and led a Western lifestyle including carrying a pocket watch with him which was rare in that era. He also had a lot of interest in educating children and loved his family a lot.
