Shison Jun to star in new NHK drama "Joshiteki Seikatsu" as a transgender

Shison Jun will be starring in the new NHK drama series "Joshiteki Seikatsu" (Life as a Girl) which will begin its run from 5 January 2018 in the Fridays 10pm timeslot. The story which is based on the same-titled novel by Sakaki Tsukasa, features Shison as a man who chooses to live as a woman and wants to date a woman rather than a man. While concealing the fact that she is a transgender, she leaves her hometown in the suburbs and works as an OL named Miki in a fashion apparel mail order company at the big city Kobe. She happens to bump into her ex-classmate Goto who is a guy and ends up living together with him. As such, Shison will appear as a woman throughout the entire drama. In order to look convincing as a woman, Shison underwent training by Nishihara Satsuki who was given the special award at the 2015 World Transgender Contest and learnt how to dress, speak and behave like a woman. Such training would usually take more than a year but Shison managed to learn everything in a month which made Nishihara very shocked and Sakaki very impressed with how he managed to pull this off.

Shison said that he tried to live like a woman to the fullest during the filming but said that this was tougher than he imagined at first since he has been living as a man without being too conscious of the differences between men and women. He had to pay attention to how he looked, his expressions, the way he walked and caring for his figure and skin in order to look like the part. He hoped that the viewers would be able to get the message of how important it is for someone to be able to love anyone and how people can become better by being considerate and mindful of others.
