Winning at the starting line doesn't guarantee success?

Came across this article from Oricon which discussed the interesting phenomenon of how celebrities who did not win in TV programme contests or audition competitions ended up becoming more successful than the eventual winners then. The writer seems to be suggesting a theory that winning at the starting line doesn't always guarantee success and that the "losers" may turn the tables later in their careers because they actually have unique traits unlike the "winners" who were selected because they were safe bets. There were a number of examples cited so I'm just going to translate some highlights rather than the entire article:

- Many of the actresses and artistes these days actually came from TV programme contests such as the 90s' audition programme ASAYAN where Morning Musume was born even though they were not the winners or beauty and audition competitions like the Japan Bishojo Contest organised by Oscar Promotion.

- In Oscar Promotion which boasts of many actresses such as Yonekura Ryoko, Takei Emi, Ueto Aya and Gouriki Ayame, they had all taken part in the Japan Bishojo Contest. In the 1992 edition, the winner was Sato Aiko who is well-known for her breakthrough role in "Itazura Na Kiss" but actually in that same year, Yonekura got the judges' special award. Likewise for Ueto who got the same award as Yonekura in the following year, the winner in 1993 was Sudo Atsuko who is doing largely supporting roles these days. Gouriki did not even make the finals in 2002 edition as she failed in the second round of selection.

- Likewise, in ASAYAN, the eventual winner was Heike Michiyo but those who did not win formed the group Morning Musume and became a huge sensation back then in the 90s and early 2000s.

- Ishihara Promotion also conducted an audition contest in 2000 to find the next Ishihara Yujiro, a famous actor and singer who passed away in 1987. Among 52,000 applicants, Tokushige Satoshi won the title and even got his poster hung up at Shibuya 109. Although he is still working as an actor, his career is still far from matching up to his predecessor as he certainly has big shoes to fill.

- In large audition programmes or contests, there is a tendency to choose a winner who is "all-rounded" i.e. with an "average" face without standing out too much. As such, those with really unusual traits or characters tend to get the smaller awards rather than the title itself. Besides, organisers tend to want to avoid the scenario of not being able to find a suitable winner so they lean towards selecting a "safe choice" which is unlikely to be criticised. In some cases, the winner is said to be a shoo-in as the judges seem to be geared towards selecting a specific candidate.

- However, because those who did not win usually have some stand-out traits, they tend to have the potential of achieving a breakthrough in their careers later on. In addition, there is the mistaken notion that winning the title represents reaching a goal rather than marking the start of a long career ahead. As such, there were people who might have been contented with what they got e.g. the star treatment or special arrangements or felt the pressure of being thrust into stardom right from the start thus making it difficult for them to develop and grow as an artiste.

- On the other hand, those who did not make the cut or just won small awards would have the need to establish themselves through their hard work and find out what works for them. Heike Michiyo admitted during a TV appearance in 2015 that she lost her hunger for success once she passed the audition as compared to Morning Musume members who were determined to make it big.

- There are also many actresses who went through tough times to get to where they are today. For example, Kitagawa Keiko and Arimura Kasumi failed many auditions for dramas and movies but they still persisted in going for the auditions. Kitagawa said before in an interview that the most scary thing during this stage of her career was the loss of desire to continue challenging because of the fear of failure while Arimura recalled how she was told that there was nothing special about her when she kept failing auditions. This actually made her think a lot about how she could develop her strengths within her limitations.

- Nonetheless, there are actresses who still made it big after winning the titles e.g. Ishihara Satomi who won the Horipro Scout Caravan and Nagasawa Masami who won the Toho Cinderella Audition. As such, it still depends very much on the individual as to whether they will end up being a success or falter after the competition, regardless of whether they are winners or losers.

Why is there a need to mention whether the wife is pregnant when Japanese celebrities make marriage announcements?

Have you ever wondered about this: why do Japanese celebrities have to indicate whether their wives or they themselves are pregnant when making marriage announcements?

Recently, this topic has come up for discussion again following Shida Mirai's marriage announcement. This article from J-CAST News takes a look at this phenomenon with some research into the past so as to explain why and how this started to become the norm.

I am not translating the entire article but will just highlight the key points so that it's easier to read and understand. Do share your comments here or via the Facebook or Twitter posts:

- When Shida announced her marriage on 14 Sep, the similarity among various publications was that they all reported the fact that she is not pregnant yet, albeit in slightly different ways:
Daily Sports: 志田は妊娠しておらず、今後も仕事を続ける (Shida is not pregnant and will continue working)
Sanspo: 挙式・披露宴は未定で、妊娠はしておらず、仕事は続ける (There are no plans yet for a wedding, she is not pregnant and will continue working)
Yomiuri Hochi: 妊娠はしておらず、仕事は続けていく (She is not working and will continue working)
Nikkansports: 志田は妊娠はしておらず、仕事は続けるという (It is said that Shida is not pregnant and will continue working)
Sponichi: 志田は妊娠しておらず、仕事は続けるという (It is said that Shida is not pregnant and will continue working)
This has sort of become a standard phrase for marriage announcements unless the couple in question is actually having a shotgun marriage.

- Although many readers would be keen to know whether the couple is getting married because a baby is on the way, there are some people who have expressed a different view. For example, Wada Akiko said on her show "Akko ni omakase!" on 29 July that she didn't see why it was necessary for this to be mentioned with reference to Miura Shohei and Kiritani Mirei's marriage announcement. She also said that Shida having to say this seemed to be like a form of sexual harassment towards the latter.

- The writer of this article went to search for articles in the past to see who "started" this trend. The oldest article which mentioned this standard phrase was back in 1998 when actress Suzuki Anju got married to a doctor who was more than 10 years older than her. At that time, nobody in the media had ever reported that Suzuki was seeing someone so there were some reports claiming that this was a shotgun marriage due to the "sudden nature" of the marriage announcement. However, a report in Nikkansports dated 7 June 1998 clearly indicated that Suzuki was not pregnant then so this statement was probably meant to quash rumours at that time.

- As it got to the early 2000s, this phrase became the norm when female TV announcers got married. It was common for them to leave their jobs and TV programmes then if they were pregnant unlike now so there was probably a need to say it if they were going to quit soon.

- However, the situation started to change again from around 2003 when this phrase became common among celebrities again, starting with Esumi Makiko who got married in 2003. It was indicated in a Nikkansports article on 28 Jan 2003 that Esumi was not pregnant, scheduled to appear in a spring drama that year and her wedding was supposed to be held in autumn.

- By the time it was 2005, the dailies joined the sports/entertainment newspapers in using this phrase. When it was 2007, this became a standard for all types of newspapers.

- The changing social trends from the 2000s probably contributed to this being specifically mentioned in the media reports as well. In the past, idols dating one another was considered scandalous and any suggestion of them engaging in sexual activities was a taboo which could kill off their careers. As such, reporters were keen to jump on anyone who was having a shotgun marriage.

- However, the last 20 years have seen a change especially with anti-social behaviour such as extramarital affairs and drug scandals being very common in showbiz. This has somehow led to people being more accepting about celebrities dating and getting pregnant before marriage because this is comparatively "milder" than those who get caught for criminal behaviour. As such, a shotgun marriage may have been scandalous in the past but now, stating the opposite has become the trend to specify that there is no baby on the way. The phrase used to indicate a shotgun marriage has also changed from できちゃった婚 (dekichatta-kon) to 授かり婚 (sazukari-kon) which sounds more positive. In fact, statistics show that about one quarter of the marriages in Japan since 2000 were shotgun ones so this probably brought about the people's change in mindset as well.

- However, there are concerns that this phrase is not suitable to be used in this era especially since there are many types of relationships where marriage is not the only option for couples. Besides, there are suggestions that this may come across as offensive to those who actually want children but cannot e.g. LGBT couples and those who are having trouble conceiving. Last but not least, even celebrities deserve to have their privacy so they should not be required to state this if they don't wish to.

What do you think about this? Does it really matter whether you know if a married couple is having a baby on the way? Will it affect your perception of them if you know this information?

Review of "Confidence Man JP" - Spring 2018

Without Waku Waku Japan, I probably would have given this drama a miss.

That's not to say that I dislike comedic dramas in general but it was more of this: I did think that this might be really silly and a waste of time to watch. As the story was by the scriptwriter Kosawa Ryota who also wrote "Legal High" and the trailer suggested that there was a huge amount of exaggeration (even more than what "Legal High" had), I was wary even though the three leads were quite an interesting and refreshing combination. The biggest bugbear I have about dramas like "Legal High" is, it was enjoyable while it lasted but often, the aftertaste or rather satisfaction level after watching it was almost non-existent.

Luckily, Waku Waku Japan decided to show it and I went ahead to watch it. Although I wouldn't say that it was extremely good, it definitely exceeded my expectations, if there were any to begin with. ^__^

Review of "Rapurasu no Majo" (ラプラスの魔女 / Laplace's Witch)

Before I proceed, here's the usual disclaimer: whatever is written here are my personal comments. It is just my perspective and you are definitely entitled to have a different opinion from mine. And if you haven't watched this and don't want to see the spoilers ahead, please feel free to skip the review.

First of all, let me explain what the title means. The name "Rapurasu ラプラス" refers to the surname of French astronomer and mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace. The meaning of Laplace's Witch is actually the theory of casual determinism which states that every event is necessitated by antecedent events and conditions together with the laws of nature. It later became known as Laplace's Demon. And in this film, Hirose Suzu's character Uhara Madoka calls herself Rapurasu no Majo (Laplace's Witch) for some reason which will be explained as the story progresses.
