"Suzuki-sensei" to be made into a movie this autumn

Hasegawa Hiroki will be starring in his first leading role in a movie when "Suzuki-sensei" starts its run in cinemas this autumn. Despite the fact that the average ratings for this drama shown last spring was a mere 2.1%, the DVD was selling very well and Hasegawa's popularity in dramas like "Kaseifu no Mita" made it possible for the drama to be made into a movie. The producer of the drama Yamashika Tatsuya commented that it couldn't be helped that "Suzuki-sensei" didn't do well on TV partly because it had strong competition in the same timeslot i.e. "SMAPxSMAP" on FujiTV and "Shabekuri 007" on NTV but he believes that the quality of the movie would make it a hit in cinemas.

Filming will begin from 5 March and co-stars include Yamaguchi Tomomitsu and Usuda Asami.

Somehow, this feels like a big leap of faith for TV Tokyo. Average rating of 2.1% still warrants a movie adaptation? I've never watched this drama so I can't tell whether it was really because of the competition that caused the low viewership. Nonetheless, this is such a huge gamble even though Hasegawa Hiroki is indeed popular these days.
