Tower Records Japan released its bestsellers rankings for 2022 today where you can see the hits for various categories such as Japanese music, K-pop, Western music, jazz and classical. What I found interesting was that the physical CDs sales rankings were pretty much dominated by Johnny's Jimusho's groups and various idol groups while the online streaming rankings saw a more varied mix of artists. Does this mean that fans of idol groups tend to be more willing to pay for physical CDs while other music consumers prefer to listen to their music digitally?
It will also be interesting to compare this with the nationwide rankings compiled by Oricon which will most likely be released later in December. The Tower Records rankings doesn't give any information about sales figures so it can be difficult to assess how much the difference is between positions in the same ranking and the true impact of sales/streaming numbers.
