Quick Review #24: Usogui (movie)

Title: Usogui 嘘食い (Lie Eater)

Currently available for viewing on: Netflix (subject to geographical location)

Rating: 1 /10

This will be the first time that I struggle to recommend a drama/movie in the quick reviews even to hardcore fans of the cast.

Disliked:
- The movie gave a very strong vibe of "Liar Game" mixed with "Kakegurui" i.e. marrying the essence of both by having people call bluff in gambling games with the players' lives and their Kakerou memberships at stake. Online reviews in general seem to suggest that the movie took the best game scenes from the manga and simply put them together but this is something which I'm unable to verify though.
From the perspective of someone who has no knowledge of the original manga, the story seemed fragmented and the focus seemed to be on the games rather than the characters, their developments and their interactions with one another. I would be fine if the games were handled in an engaging way but the way the games went and how people won or lost came across as very unconvincing and boring. It was almost as if luck or the ability to manipulate the game before or during it played a larger part in the outcomes rather than skills, observation powers, knowledge and guts. Then there's nothing to gamble in the first place since who can play the game dirtier will have a chance of winning anyway.

- Much as it would be tempting to criticise the cast as well for this lackluster film, the issue with the story would mean that it takes a miracle to turn this into something decent enough to watch. For example, the lead character Baku lacked a draw factor for me to root for him and I didn't care if he won or not. Although Yokohama Ryuusei did his best to play Baku, I think it will be challenging for most people to like Baku just based on this movie even though the character may be very different in the manga. As for the rest of the characters, there wasn't a lot of time devoted to them so it's kind of hard to form an opinion on whether I like them or not. Nonetheless, just for the efforts of the cast and how they had to dress and behave in a way quite detached from reality (at times it just was so painful yet funny to watch them keep up the pretense), I chose not to give this movie a zero in the end.

For some Japanese classic songs on New Year's Eve, how about watching "Toshiwasure Nippon no Uta" on TV Tokyo?

Trust TV Tokyo to buck the trend...again!

In recent years, it has been said that many music shows are catering to the young people only which inevitably means that veteran singers face limited performing opportunities as a result. For example, NHK's Kouhaku Utagassen has been criticised for its dwindling number of enka and kayoukyoku (Showa era pop music) singers in its annual lineup as it focuses on relatively newer and more popular Japanese and Korean artists.

And so for those who have no idea about the so-called "hot" artists these days or K-POP groups, TV Tokyo comes to their rescue.

There is this program called "Toshiwasure Nippon no Uta" (literally meaning "the songs of Japan to forget about the past year") which is aired every New Year's Eve over the past 55 years. Viewers can watch familiar faces belt out songs which "everyone should know" over 6 hours from 4pm to 10pm.

Josei Jishin did an interview with the program's producer Hoshi Shunichi where he spoke about the show's stance and interesting titbits about what goes on behind the scenes. As such, I'm sharing the highlights of this interview so that you can know more about this show and how it tries to plug the gap in needs from viewers who seem to have been "forgotten".

- Hoshi joined TV Tokyo in 2000 and has worked on this show for a long time. Due to the fact that this program features a lineup of many big name singers, TV Tokyo which has a small workforce, mobilises its entire production staff to work on this program. Newbies would start off with being asked to call the singers to standby at the side of the stage and gradually take on more significant tasks.

- However, many young staff members do not know enka or kayoukyoku songs or the singers so they have to start off by learning about and remembering the faces of the singers. The funny thing is, it is difficult to remember everyone even with this pre-preparation and there have been many occasions where the staff is calling for a particular singer without realising that he/she is already standing beside the staff concerned!

- The show used to be broadcast live until 2014 but is now filmed in advance with a live audience and includes video inserts of past performances. This is in contrast with the Kouhaku or the Nippon Record Taisho which are broadcast live.
The main reason why the broadcast format was changed is due to ratings. The TV station did their best to boost ratings while trying to keep the "live" format but to no avail. Surprisingly, by doing a pre-recorded show with past footage to enrich the content, the ratings actually went up.

- Back then when all 3 shows were live on New Year's Eve, there would be unexpected incidents such as those who were appearing on multiple shows being delayed due to reasons like traffic jams. It was often that the younger staff would have mixed up the faces of the singers and later found out that those who were supposed to be on stand-by had actually not arrived. When that happened, the staff had to adjust to these challenges in a flexible manner and change the appearance order if needed.

- As the production team already expects that they won't beat the NHK Kouhaku Utagassen in terms of ratings, the aim of the show is to provide a place where those who don't know the latest artists or K-POP can enjoy New Year's Eve listening to classics which almost everyone should know.

- In the past, the criteria in deciding the songs to be performed was partly based on the Kouhaku's lineup i.e. as long as it isn't a new song to be performed there, they could do it on their show. However, as times changed, the number of hit songs per year isn't as many as before and they tend to be songs which the older generations do not know. As such, the focus of the program changed to songs which are widely known across generations. This is also in line with their policy of featuring songs which you don't get to hear often in daily life so you should get to hear these classics to wrap up the year.

- Ironically though, as I mentioned before in a post about TV Tokyo's size and broadcast reach, the producer himself is unable to watch the program live at his hometown in Fukushima when he returns home for the holidays. And his family has the longstanding habit of watching Kouhaku on that night. As such, he hopes that they can broadcast this show via the Internet as soon as possible to reach these places where TV Tokyo's programs cannot be seen so that he can finally watch the show with his parents.

Top 10 dramas in 2022 with the highest satisfaction scores (Oricon)

This ranking was derived from the following data collected by Oricon for dramas shown between 11 Jan and 15 Dec 2022:
* Survey of 690 Oricon monitors every week where they had to rate the dramas based on a 10-point scale for the aspects of story, leads, supporting cast, lines, visuals, music, artwork etc.
* Data based on viewership (broadcast ratings & number of views on online streaming portals), leads, supporting cast, content and Twitter posts were rated based on a 20-point scale

As such, the total score shown in brackets below are the figures based on a 100-point scale.

FujiTV is seeing a reversal of its fortune this year with its dramas dominating half of the ranking and the top 3 spots. TBS which saw 5 works in the ranking last year, only had 3 this year while NTV which had 2 spots last year, was left out of the ranking this time. This was especially significant considering that "Hakozume" was the No.1 in 2021's ranking. In addition, last year's ranking saw 6 dramas with a satisfaction score of above 90 but there were only the top 3 which achieved that this year. And there were 2 dramas which got full marks last year i.e. "Hakozume" and "Tengoku to Jigoku" from TBS but none this year.

Out of the top 10, the only ones which I did not watch were "Mystery to iu nakare", "Kodoku no gurume Season 10" (not because I wasn't interested but I didn't have the chance to watch anything after Season 1), Kurosagi, Nanba MG5 and Shoujiki Fudousan. I would probably want to watch "Mystery to iu nakare" if given the opportunity though.

So how many of the top 10 have you watched and what do you think of the ranking results?

1) silent - FujiTV (97.7)

2) Elpis - Kibou, arui wa saiwai - FujiTV (93.6)

3) Mystery to iu nakare - FujiTV (91.2)

4) Kodoku no gurume Season 10 - TV Tokyo (89.8)

5) Kurosagi - TBS (89.4)

6) Ishiko to Haneo - Sonna koto de utaemasu? - TBS (89.1)

7) My Family - TBS (85.9)

8) PICU Shoni shuuchuu chiryoushitsu - FujiTV (84.8)

9) Nanba MG5 - FujiTV (84.5)

10) Shoujiki Fudousan - NHK (83.7)

Quick Review #23: Elpis - Kibou, arui wa wazawai - (Autumn 2022)

Title
: Elpis - Kibou, arui wa wazawai - エルピス―希望、あるいは災い―

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: Kansai TV

Rating: 6.5 / 10

Recommended for: those who likes to watch David vs. Goliath stories about social injustice and don't mind the lengthy and sometimes mind-boggling and preachy dialogue / fans of the three main cast members i.e. Nagasawa Masami, Maeda Goudon & Suzuki Ryohei

Liked:
- The three main actors.
Nagasawa Masami showed the emotional changes in Ena very well throughout the whole drama, be it towards work or romance and was really convincing as a TV news announcer in her diction and delivery of her lines. Not to mention, her stylist deserves a commendation for making her look so beautiful even when she was supposedly in the doldrums while trying to be a minimalist.
It's my first time seeing Maeda Goudon and I have to say that I was really surprised at how he was able to maintain a good balance between pulling and pushing. There were times when Takuro came across as really overwhelming (seemed like he was over-acting) but when contrasted with the stage when he was struggling with his past and the frustration in the present, Maeda was able to show a more subdued side in his acting and the changes in Takuro's mind clearly.
Suzuki Ryohei was hot, not just for looking good in suits but also his chemistry with Nagasawa both in the work and romance sense. The two of them were able to deliver such intense scenes with precision and I would have loved to see them together even more.

- The build-up of the false charge case investigation up to Ep 6 looked really promising until...

Disliked:
- The thing is, this story tried to achieve a lot but fell flat for a number of reasons.
First of all, it may have started as a false charge case investigation aimed at overturning a death sentence. Which actually, I found to be quite engaging at first and managed to write episodic reflections on that. However, it took a rather drastic turn and became more of a personal crusade to overthrow the people in power who were corrupt. Frankly speaking, this kind of story isn't anything new and there have been other works which handled this theme way better than this drama. That's why I got so bored and didn't want to continue writing anything from Ep 7 onwards.
Secondly, it felt that the so-called false charge case theme was just a cover-up for a more targeted criticism of the current legal & political scene in Japan. For example, there were several references in the portrayal of the vice prime minister Daimon in this drama which were mentioned in some articles that he seemed to be modeled after Asou Taro (current vice president of the ruling party and used to be a vice prime minister too). And that the use of Abe Shinzo's image just months after his assassination and the thinly-veiled sarcasm and criticism of the scandals or controversies that happened during his term as the prime minister - that certainly hadn't gone unnoticed. As such, it suggested the lofty aim of trying to help a wrongly-accused guy was merely to conceal the true intentions of the production crew especially the scriptwriter. And because it got really personal, the story seemed to lose its objectivity and became somewhat preachy about what's right towards the end.
Last but not least, because of this sudden change in direction, the false charge case became so redundant and forgotten in the last few episodes to the extent that it was an afterthought in the negotiation to get Ena to change her mind. I was definitely not convinced by Saito's argument made to Ena at the end and it was really illogical the way things ended even though the scriptwriter tried to make it look like there's still hope as long as you don't stop believing. Erm, I'm not sure I would believe that after seeing what happened.

- The under-development of Saito's character. Much as Suzuki Ryohei tried to make Saito as charming and interesting as possible, it felt like the viewers only got to see what's on the surface. What is his motivation for wanting to get power? To change the unfair world? To correct injustices? And how does he actually feel about Ena? Any hidden truths behind the revelation of their dating scandal years ago? Did he ever make use of Ena for his personal gains? So many questions but no answers.

- The under-utilisation of the supporting actors. Seriously, you get someone like Nagayama Eita to play the so-called murderer yet he only appeared once as some shady guy. Is that all he should be showing? And getting Miura Touko to play Cherry but her only intended purpose seems to be the catalyst in getting the main trio to restart the investigation. I thought that was really wasteful as well.

Quick Review #22: Reibai tantei Jouzuka Hisui / Invert Jouzuka Hisui Toujoshu

Title
: Reibai tantei Jouzuka Hisui / Invert Jouzuka Hisui Toujoshu 霊媒探偵・城塚翡翠 / invert ・城塚翡翠 倒叙集

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: NTV

Rating: 6 / 10

Recommended for: those who don't mind a slow buildup in a suspense story where the detective outwits the criminal in one move

Liked:
- Ep 5. This has got to be the best episode in the entire series made up of 2 dramas in the same season with the same characters. The way how the truth was revealed and how Hisui outsmarted the Transparent Devil was very engaging even though it was largely Hisui talking for most of the episode.

- Kiyohara Kaya & Seto Koji having great chemistry as "partners" at work and in love

- The chemistry between Kiyohara and Koshiba Fuuka in the "invert" arc where they had more playful and spontaneous interactions.

Disliked:
- The buildup in the first 4 episodes was just too slow and painful to sit through.

- The "invert" arc seemed quite refreshing in the first episode with its reverse reasoning but the concept got stale really quickly with subsequent cases. It also didn't help that the finale in the "invert" arc was way too simple to deduce and see through.

- I was hoping to see some revelations about Hisui in the "invert" arc but it was very disappointing to note that there was nothing substantial. Which means that the likelihood of a sequel is pretty high but I'm not sure if I can sit through more boring episodes to get to those revelations.

Review of "silent" (Autumn 2022)

And so this is the end of the "#silent" journey after 12 weeks (there was a week's break in between because of the World Cup broadcast).

Instead of discussing in great detail about the finale, I have chosen to summarise my thoughts about the entire drama in this post. For those who may be interested, you can check out my "long and detailed thoughts" about the previous 10 episodes through the following links:

Ep 1: TwitterFacebook
Ep 10: Twitter / Facebook

Personally, my top 3 favourite episodes were no.5 (Tsumugi & Minato's break-up), no.6 (the story of Nana and Sou) and no.8 (the story of Nana and Haruo). They were simply so engaging, emotional and heart-wrenching and left a strong impression on me. That's not to say that I didn't care about the main couple's story...it's just that comparatively, these 3 episodes resonated with me a lot. And as I mentioned before, I found myself caring more for what happened to Nana and Haruo rather than Tsumugi and Sou because of Ep 8.

To begin with, I must admit that I had no expectations of this drama at first and adopted a wait-and-see attitude - meaning I was prepared to drop this anytime if it wasn't to my liking. Part of the reason was that stories like this about someone who is considered "normal" and part of the majority being in a relationship with someone who is faced with a considerable physical, financial, circumstantial challenge or disadvantage in life aren't that new. As such, there was no doubt that this would be compared to some of the more well-known same genre predecessors like 1995's "Aishiteru to itte kure" starring Tokiwa Takako and Toyokawa Etsushi or "Hoshi no kinka" in the same year starring Sakai Noriko, Oosawa Takao & Takenouchi Yutaka.

Of course, to be fair to "silent", the setting was somewhat different because the lead characters actually fell in love back in high school when they did not face this challenge of hearing loss and reunited years later to have a second go at being together whereas the titles I mentioned featured the main couples starting off with a romantic relationship while already coping with their challenges/differences.

Secondly, much as I think Kawaguchi Haruna is a decent actress, I can't really say that I am impressed or like her acting based on what I've seen from her so far. As for Meguro Ren, I had heard of Snow Man before but I didn't even know that he was part of the group. In addition, I hadn't seen any of Meguro's acting projects in the past so he was literally an unknown to me. Since then, I am much more familiar with him now, have watched "Kieta Hatsukoi" and even know the names of all the Snow Man members by now. It also helped to see that Kaho and Kazama Shunsuke were in the line-up as well so this gave me a little more faith in this drama.

Unexpectedly, this drama literally started with a bang and was such an overnight sensation right from the first episode. I was pleasantly surprised to see the level of detail, attention and effort put in and the script definitely played a big part in the drama's success. Considering that this was the debut work of a newbie scriptwriter, it was even more impressive because honestly speaking, brand name power is still a factor in this industry which determines how much faith people have in your works. Then again, even big name scriptwriters sometimes struggle to churn out hit after hit so being well-known sometimes doesn't guarantee success. As such, I thought that the producer and director really took a huge leap of faith with the scriptwriter in this case which thankfully worked out really well. Nonetheless, I think that even with a good script, there still needs to be good directing, cinematography, visuals, music, sound and acting as well so whatever the drama had achieved to date is definitely a team effort based on the synergies of its cast and crew.

I was still a bit apprehensive about this drama would go after Ep 1 because there have been many dramas which started off with a bang and simply fizzled out in no time. Last season's "Junai Dissonance" was just like this - I was so impressed with the first episode but everything just went haywire after that. Fortunately, "silent" had been very consistent with its quality and provided so much food for thought that it helped to keep viewers engaged and tuning in week after week. Seeing how my weekly reflections get longer and longer would be a tell-tale sign of how involved I was while watching this drama.

The characters were also very endearing - as in there wasn't any baddie that could turn viewers off - and everyone got a chance to shine and show the different sides of themselves. I believe that if the characters were not so lovable or the viewers couldn't care less about what happened to them, that would have reduced the level of engagement felt while watching this drama.

With regard to the finale, I think opinions may differ depending on your expectations. If you hope to see an happily-ever-after ending, it may not be entirely satisfactory though. Yet, it is not a bleak and hopeless situation.

I may be a bit pessimistic or too practical but I sort of expected that it won't be a 100% happy ending before I watched the finale. The issues that Sou and Tsumugi face are not things that can be solved in one episode and there is the gap of 8 years they need to bridge as well. It's true that they still love each other but it takes time to get used to being in a relationship as adults and trying to find a mutually acceptable way of being with each other that doesn't place undue stress or burden on one party. As such, the ending was kind of open-ended in the sense that we can see that they are still a work-in-progress i.e. they have made the commitment to try and find a way out but they are still far from the happy-ever-after stage. I thought that this was a logical and realistic way of portraying their relationship rather than being told that every issue is no issue just as long as they love each other. Likewise, much as I would like to see Nana and Haruo being together again, they too need time to bridge the distance between them. Of course, I am hopeful that there will come a day when they can be a couple but their open-ended status allows the viewers to imagine what may come so that's still not bad after all.

However, for those who come into the finale with the expectation of a happy ending, you may feel that the finale hasn't achieved much especially since the pace can be a tad draggy at times. I also feel that the earlier 10 episodes had raised the bar so high that the finale may seem a bit anti-climatic to some and may not come across as satisfying.

As for the cast, I think that everyone did a good job but my personal favourites are Kaho and Kazama. Even though there was only one episode which focused on Nana and Haruo, the two of them made the best of their airtime to produce some really memorable fine acting. E.g. when Haruo called out Nana's name even though her back was facing him and she couldn't have heard him, the amount of emotion in that moment was mind-blowing. Or the fallout they had when they just couldn't understand or chose not to understand each other's feelings and intentions.

As for Kawaguchi and Meguro, I thought that their best moment was in the first episode when Sou and Tsumugi finally met again outside the train station and they just couldn't communicate with each other because one was speaking and the other was using sign language. That frustration, sadness and helplessness which they displayed were very much unforgettable. In the finale, there were some cute moments then and now which I thought would be quite satisfying for fans of the main couple.

To sum things up, I would recommend this drama to those who are prepared to spend time savouring each moment and emotion in this story. This is definitely not the type of drama that you can just play in the background without looking at the screen because there were so many scenes where there was no dialogue and you have to rely on the subtitles to know what the sign language meant. As such, you really need to slow down and take in the story bit by bit. And because the drama is more than just about romance, it should also satisfy those who want to see more than just a love story since there are side plots about friendships and family as well.

Quick Review #21: PICU Shouni shuuchuu chiryoushitsu (Autumn 2022)

Title
: PICU Shouni shuuchuu chiryoushitsu PICU 小児集中治療室

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: FujiTV

Rating: 7 / 10

Recommended for: those who like medical dramas and are fine with them being slower-paced and focus more on the people i.e. the medical staff and patients rather than the illnesses

Liked:
- The first 30 minutes of Ep 9 where Takeshiro and Minami spent time in Tokyo to seek a second opinion about her illness and reveal their thoughts and love for each other. Those scenes were so heart-wrenching because the love and bond between mother and son were so strong and touching yet it wasn't over-the-board in going really dramatic about Minami's last days.

- This is the first time that I've watched Yoshizawa Ryo in a leading role and I was really impressed with the natural and progressive development of his character Takeshiro over the course of these three months. His acting was right on spot in showing the various emotional states of Takeshiro without it ever feeling like it was faked or forced.

- The scenery of Hokkaido which honestly felt like a visually-pleasing travelogue at times.

Disliked:
- The pacing of this drama can be a bit uneven at times - some episodes had more developments or were more engaging to watch while some felt pretty draggy. If you are used to the medical dramas which show the doctors and nurses racing against time to save patients e.g. in an ER setting, this might not be your cup of tea.

- The part about how Takeshiro going around to request for more resources from other departments in the hospital for PICU - I thought that was kind of idealistic and too cliché. Considering that other departments were also shorthanded, it doesn't seem realistic for them to give in to Takeshiro's pleading as easily as how it was depicted.

- I felt that the discussion on the challenges posed by Hokkaido's vast land area on the medical resources for relatively remote or far-flung places were pretty superficial. It was as if there was much attention devoted to this theme in the first few episodes but it sort of slipped into the background and became forgotten as the focus shifted to the main characters. And it looks likely that this might become a long-running series since the topic is not something that can be resolved simply by having a designated medical plane stationed near the PICU or having more PICUs. As such, the "unfinished business" ending did result in a lower level of satisfaction felt by the time the drama ended.

Quick Review #20: Atomu no ko (Autumn 2022)

Title
: Atomu no ko アトムの童

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: TBS

Rating: 7.5 / 10

Recommended for: those who are interested in the gaming industry, fans of the cast and/or like David and Goliath stories.

Liked:
- Odagiri Jo. I admit that I am personally biased here because I am a fan of Odagiri and would be happy with whatever he appears in (well, most of the time). However, I cannot ignore the fact that him standing in for Kagawa Teruyuki just before the season started turned out to be the icing on the cake for this drama and a blessing in disguise in a rather unpleasant situation. In fact, I think that the role fits Odagiri way better in terms of appearance and character setting. I wouldn't have liked this drama as much if it had been Kagawa who played Okitsu and the subsequent bromance subplot with Yamazaki Kento wouldn't have worked at all if not for Odagiri.

- The lead trio played by Yamazaki Kento, Matsushita Kouhei and Kishii Yukino showed great teamwork and chemistry which was reflective of their respective characters' friendship and elevated the comrade aspect in this drama with each challenge cleared together.  And I was relieved that the scriptwriter didn't try to create a love line or love triangle between them or it would have been really awkward and soured the friendship aspect of this story. Friendship between men and women being great partners at work does work well so not everything has to end up in romance.

- The insights into the gaming industry were quite interesting as I highlighted in my episodic reflections posted throughout this season. For someone new to this industry or those who have some basic knowledge, it will still be quite insightful to know about the process of creating a game before it finally meets the world. To be honest, I was quite skeptical about how this story of a struggling toy manufacturer becoming a game producer would turn out but the gradual progress of this transition turned out to be quite believable and engaging most of the time.

Disliked:
- The finale was pretty underwhelming. After being fed with lots of dramatic twists and turns so far to get to this point, the resolution turned out to be so predictable and somewhat too straightforward. The usual style of using just words/arguments to convince a key person to change his/her mind has been used so many times in Japanese dramas but the argument has to be moving/convincing enough to make the viewers agree with how the story ends. Unfortunately, I personally didn't buy into Nayuta's reasoning so if I was the major shareholder, I wouldn't have been convinced to vote for SAGAS. And to think that Okitsu didn't get a chance to save his company himself, I thought that was very disappointing to see.

- The flashback scene sequence was way too long. I get that it was meant to show how the characters concerned had come a long way to resolving their differences, achieving success in different ways and moving on to what they want to do but it was getting too draggy by the time it went past the 1-min mark. Flashbacks don't need to be that detailed and I certainly don't need a recap of the entire drama with another 10+ minutes to go before the episode ended.

- Throughout the course of the drama, I did mention that there were quite a number of illogical points which I could appreciate that was for dramatic effect or for the drama to move forward. Seriously speaking, given the gullible, somewhat naïve and overly kind nature of those in "Atomu Gangu" and "Atomu no ko", it was a surprise to see them survive till the end.
The issue is, if a drama is meant to showcase a real-life business world or industry, the balance between reality and fiction ratio is very difficult to achieve. If you go overboard with the reality, the drama becomes very much like a boring documentary. However, if it becomes so detached from reality, it's difficult for the viewers to feel immersed or believe the story. The later situation was what prevented me from enjoying the story more because the logical/practical side of me would be very bothered by the discrepancies with reality. Then again, this issue might not be so applicable to all though especially those who don't mind the sometimes overly dramatic or smoother-than-expected developments to benefit the protagonists.

Quick Review #19: First Penguin! (Autumn 2022)

Title
: First Penguin! ファーストペンギン!

Season: Autumn 2022

Broadcast by: NTV

Rating: 6.5/10

Recommended for: those who are interested to know about the fishery industry, fans of Nao and like feel-good stories of how people rise above challenges to become successful

Liked:
- Nao. She definitely carried the series very well as the lead with her strong acting and very engaging portrayal of Nodoka who packed a lot of power and energy despite her petite frame. Despite the tough challenges Nodoka faced and a lack of trust in her from the people around, she always overcame these issues with a smile. However, Nodoka wasn't just one-dimension though because there were moments of weakness and self-doubt which I thought Nao managed to show the transition between these different sides of Nodoka very seamlessly. And even when surrounded by a group of men in the story, she could still stand out and hold her own without giving the feeling that Nodoka wasn't a competent leader.
Of course, kudos also go to the supporting cast including Tsutsumi Shinichi, Suzuki Nobuyuki, Matsumoto Wakana and Watanabe Daichi who did a good job in making their characters endearing enough to root for and giving Nao a much-needed boost as the heroine. It was also fun to watch the after-stories of these characters a few years down the road in the finale.

- There was a fair bit of interesting information about the fishery industry in Japan in particular which helped to show why Nodoka's presence as a disruptor and upsetting the status quo could elicit such a strong and violent reaction from the incumbents such as the fishing association. The last twist about national and security interests was not expected but I thought it was a timely addition and made the story end on a more serious note rather than keep harping on "local" competition issues.

Disliked:
- The biggest problem with the story was the bullying and having it on repeat and escalating mode. If it's a couple of times, I can understand that it was meant to show the set of challenges that Nodoka had to overcome in order to achieve success. However, there were times when the bullying tactics became so trivial and petty that it was getting dry, repetitive and boring. I had the lingering thought of wanting to drop this drama as early as in Ep 3/4.
The other extreme though was seeing bullying taken to such a level that it was so malicious, had hurt innocent folks and there was scant regard for the safety and lives of the fishermen. Although this drama is based on a true story, I can't help but wonder how many of these instances did actually happen. As such, if you want to watch this, you need to be prepared for the potential disgust, frustration and annoyance felt while seeing the bullying get worse with each episode.

- The somewhat stagnant timeline was also a bugbear for me because the entire story took place 10 years ago and the timeline never budged from then. I was still hoping to see some progression but up to the last episode, the only "movement in time" was to see Susumu return to the fishing port as a high school student to visit Hiroshi. If the events had been spread out for a longer period of time, how would it have changed the pacing and story development? I certainly don't think that the heroine in real life managed to achieve so much in a year or less so the drama's story might have felt a bit more believable and convincing if it was spread out more evenly.
