Mr.Children to sing the theme song for new movie "Kimi no suizou wo tabetai"

Mr.Children will be singing the theme song for new movie "Kimi no suizou wo tabetai" starring Hamabe Minami and Kitamura Takumi which will be shown in cinemas from 28 July. The movie is based on the same-titled bestseller novel by Sumino Yoru which was ranked No.2 in the 2016 Honya Taisho. Hamabe and Kitamura will be playing the past of the leads while Oguri Shun and Kitagawa Keiko will be featured in the current era. The story features the heroine Yamauchi Sakura (Hamabe) who is suffering from a serious illness in her pancreas and the only person who knows about her illness is the lead character "Boku" (Kitamura) who is Sakura's classmate. 12 years later, Boku (Oguri) returns to his alma mater to become a teacher while Sakura's best friend Kyoko (Kitagawa) is about to get married. As the story shuttles between the past and present spanning 12 years, it talks about the death of people dear to you and how feelings are conveyed through something more than words.

The theme song titled "himawari" was written by the band as it approaches its 25th anniversary this year. Vocalist Sakurai Kazutoshi commented that the story is full of beauty, strength, gentleness and cruelness which is heart-wrenching so they tried to incorporate all these elements into this song. The original novel's author Sumino expressed surprise at having Mr.Children sing the theme song and that it was interesting and unexpected to have the song's title featuring the sunflower, a flower typically associated with summer, even though the heroine's name is Sakura which is associated with spring.
