The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan, Inc. announced the box office trends in Japan for the year 2012 on 30 January 2013. Japanese movies did very well last year with an increase of 28.8% increase in ticket sales to reach JPY 128.2bn which is the highest since 2000. When combined with foreign movies, the total takings reached JPY 195.2bn which was 7.7% higher than 2011 when the tsunami crisis struck. In terms of box office takings percentages, Japanese movies took up 65.7% of the ticket sales which makes it the fifth consecutive year that it has done better than foreign movies which went below the 40% mark for the first time in 43 years.
As for the number of cinema screens, it decreased by 49 to 3,290 screens for the second consecutive year. 88.1% of these screens are equipped with the facilities to screen digital films. There were a total of 983 movies screened in cinemas last year which was 184 more than the previous year. Of these, 98 were stage plays and music-related films.
Of the movies which crossed the JPY 5bn mark, there were 4 Japanese films i.e. BRAVE HEARTS Umizaru, Terumae Romae, Odoru Daisousasen THE FINAL Aratanaru Kibou, Evangelion Shingekijou: Q and 1 foreign film i.e. Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol.
